Description: Spectacular pair of .45ACP Savage Arms U.S. Military Trials Pistols from the Savage Arms Collection. Impossible to upgrade due to condition and provenance.

If you wish to purchase only one of these pistols, contact me for pricing and to have the listing revised. These two pistols were sold by Savage Arms in 1977. They've remained together for more than 100 years. This pair of pistols belongs in the collection of an advanced Savage Arms collector.

Each pistol will be described separately. However, the pistols are priced as a pair. I will not rule out separating the pistols, but prefer to keep them together.

The First Pistol Description: Savage Arms M1907 factory Prototype pistol "A"

This pistol is reportedly the VERY FIRST Savage M1907 Prototype ever produced. There were reportedly as many as (10) different factory prototypes built by Savage Arms, which were all unnumbered. This pistol, however, is factory marked "A".

This pistol was retained by Savage Arms and displayed in the Savage Arms Collection at the factory museum until it was sold in 1977 after several thefts from the museum. Savage Arms officials opted to sell valuable pistol displays rather than to chance having them stolen.

The pistol is original unfinished. It is completely factory original and unaltered, exactly as it left Savage Arms in 1977. The 1st Savage Arms pistol. Impossible to upgrade.

The Second Pistol Description: Savage Arms M1907 U.S. Trials Pistol s/n 11

Original and unaltered as released by the Savage Arms factory museum in 1977. One of only 181 Savage M1907 trials pistols purchased from the U.S. government and returned to Savage Arms after Colt was awarded the contract for what became the U.S. Model 1911 pistol. The U.S. paid $65.00 each for these pistols to use in the military pistol trials 1. The U.S. sold these pistols back to Savage Arms for $6.50 each.

Most of those pistols were refurbished and later sold commercially for $18.00 each. This pistol was retained by Savage Arms and was displayed in the factory museum. After a rash of thefts, Savage opted to sell many valuable pieces rather than to have them stolen.

This pistol has all matching numbered parts, except for the stocks. One stock is #38 and the other is not numbered. Parts were often interchanged during the pistol trials to check interchangeability. Savage also changed some parts while pistols were being modified and/or updated during the pistol trials, and eventually while refurbishing pistols to be sold commercially. Most known pistols have several non-matching parts. I am relatively confident Savage Arms specifically matched this pistol back up to be retained for the museum

The Savage applied high-polish finish rates above 99% This pistol is considered impossible to upgrade, based on its condition and provenance.

Savage Arms specifically marked the pistols in the Savage Arms Collection with either "P" for Prototype, or "R" for Regular production for inventory purposes. This pistol is marked with an "R" below the barrel to indicate it was a standard M1907 regular production pistol used by the U.S. military.

Official Ordnance records indicate it was originally issued to Troop I, 3rd U.S. Cavalry, Fort Wingate, New Mexico and was used 1 in the field trials being up to the adoption of the M1911 pistol.

I am a collector of all U.S. military issue handguns, especially the M1911, M1911A1 and Colt Govt. Model pistols. My primary interest involves U.S. military pistols and revolvers manufactured before 1947. However, I also collect high quality WWII Axis pistols and Colts manufactured up about 1980.

I am a Life Member of the N.R.A., CCA and several other collector associations. I am a member of several online forum sites, but generally only post in the collector boards. I administer a website to provide inspection services for USGI handguns and provide collector information and photos.

I regularly buy to upgrade my collection. We attend more than 30 gun shows each year and regularly exhibit displays at some of the major shows and the Colt Collector Association annual conventions. I also provide paid inspections at the shows through our website.

I am acknowledged in Clawson's Collectors Guide and Meadows' Volume II and have acquired several pistols featured in books and articles authored by Clawson, Meadows, Pate and Brunner. feel free to contact me for more information or references.

I am not an 01 FFL and use a local shop for all transactions requiring shipment and dealer transfers. I do legal face-to-face transactions only where permitted by law.
