Yugoslav partisans captured the retreating Nazi Army’s 98K rifles. In 1946, Zastava Arms plant set up shop in Kragujevac refurbishing and reissuing said rifles for the Yugoslavian Army. Each barrel is importer stamped on its right side, with Preduzece 44 stamped on the left side receiver and the Yugoslavian crest on the breech ring. Mod. 98 on receiver’s left side, Waffenamts, non serial numbers, and likely internal markings are German. Serial numbers on receiver right side, bolt handle, floorplate, and cartouches are often mismatches stamped by Zastava Arms Plant. Waffenamts usually number 3 or 4 total, positioned anywhere from the front sight face to the barrel bands, to the rear sight, extractor, bolt handle, release lever, or even the floor plate. Manufacturer was Nazi Germany’s Military Complex, principally Mauser-Werke. Type is 98K Bolt Action Mauser Rifle. Chambering is 7.92 x 57, 8mm Mauser caliber. Construction is entirely steel metal, with original issue wood stock and barrel guard. Stocks and barrel guards are original laminate, elm, or walnut. Buttplates are either cap type or flat plate. Barrels are all 24 inch, 4 groove 1:9 right hand. Sights are welded band front with steel blade insert, and calibrated 2000 meter military rear. Bayonet lug cap is slotted and threaded for a 12 inch, .200 diameter rod, that is Not included. Magazine is internal box 5 round with removable, not detachable, floor plate. Safety is 3 position cowl mounted. Trigger is .262 smooth face, pulls two stage at 6 pound vicinity with minimal felt creep. Buttstock length of pull is 13 3/8 inches, with a 3/4 inch right hand cast. Weight empty is 8 pounds 10 ounces with center of gravity at the breech face; with 43 5/8 overall length. Finish is arsenal reblue, with clear lettering. Surface detractions are moderate, principally stock scouring, occasional armorer splice pieces, and moderate wear to the barrel and receiver. We rate this rifle and its mates as Good, 70 percent vicinity, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore will show etchy texture in its rifling grooves from firing corrosive primed ammunition, but chamber and mechanism are otherwise clear and clean. Inside receiver and cartridge follower will show very little use. From their condition, we estimate these rifles were fired fewer than 500 times.
