Description: US Model 1903 Mk. I, with the mysterious ejection port cut in the left side, receiver rail. See slot in photo. for more photos tex 386 and 747 then 4515 That slot was to handle ejection of spent cases, flying out after being fired by the Pedersen Device, which turned the bolt action, Model 1903 Springfield Rifle into a semi-auto rifle in order to lay down rapid "walking fire", now called suppressive fire. All original Springfield and dated 1919. Introduced too late to be used during WWI, these Mk.I rifles were kept as top secret until made obsolete, by the adoption of the semi-auto fire, M1 Rifle in 1932. Even then, when the Mk.I rifles went back into regular service, as issue grade M1903 rifles, the soldiers carrying them did not know why the "funny" slot was cut into the left side receiver rail. Fires the original 30-06 cartridges using the standard M1903 bolt put back in place as seen in the photo. A rare piece of US military history. More photos and details upon request.
