This 681 with fully traditional Satin Stainless Trigger and Hammer, no suffix. By its AUN serial number prefix, it was manufactured in 1984. This revolver is M-stamped, so it has undergone the firing pin bushing modification from the early 1990s. We consider that to make it even rarer. We classify this one as Near Mint Condition, in a factory labeled recently made blue plastic box with lock and instruction manual. It is a Law Enforcement revolver, but likely was never issued. This revolver is Excellent mechanically. Lateral play or wobble effect to the cylinder is minimal with the trigger relaxed and negligible with the trigger pulled. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the forcing cone is very light, a thin crease that extends less than halfway across the top strap. This revolver has simply not been fired much at all. We detect no stress evidence whatsoever to the side plate screws, and there is even some original grease along the plate seam. Bore and cylinder chambers are clean and Excellent. Timing is Excellent as well. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels a full 20 degrees after the cylinder times into place on double action. On single action, the hammer travels a full 35 degrees in all six positions, and the single action trigger pull is a crisp 3 7/8 pounds. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is an optimal .007. This is by far the nicest 681 we’ve had in years; in fact, one of only a handful we’ve been able to find.
