Description: 2 OF 3 EXQUISITE WWII ERA HANDGUNS ENGRAVED & STOCKED BY KURT JAEGER: ITHACA M1911 & 2 MATCHING S&W VICTORY MODEL REVOLVERS. PRICE IS FOR THE SET. S&W Victory Model 6-shot revolver with 4 inch barrel, profusely engraved by the German Master Engraver, Kurt Jaeger, blued all over and stocked with hand carved and stippled grips. This vintage WWII Victory revolver carries a V-prefixed serial number on the underside of its barrel and on the back of the cylinder, and a “V” stamp on the frame under the left grip panel. A “P” proof mark follows the serial number under the barrel and precedes the “V” on the cylinder. S&W manufactured the Victory Model handguns from 1942 through 1944. Matching assembly numbers are stamped on the frame and cylinder crane. Profusely engraved by Master Firearms Engraver, Kurt Jaeger (Jager), known for his meticulous detail and high quality engraving. Kurt Jaeger was born and grew up in Suhl. During WWII, he was drafted into the German army, subsequently wounded and taken prisoner by U.S. forces. After WWII, he initially engraved firearms primarily for American servicemen. He worked from the Wiesbaden Rod and Gun Club at the American Air Force base. Many of his American customers were high ranking officers in the US Air Force and other services and ranking members of the Allies’ services. He and his nephew, Dietrich Apel, ran a small shop in Mainz and in the 1950s, when German citizens were allowed to own and purchase firearms again, his primary customers came from his homeland. He passed away in 2003. The 2 Victory Model revolvers are beautifully engraved in finely detailed Germanic leafy scroll over most of the exposed steel. Barrel foreends are smooth while the top of each breech is engraved. Entire frames are engraved and there is large “R” in a circle on the right sides, surrounded by the engraving. Cylinders are blued with a plum-blue hue. Back straps, trigger guards and front straps are engraved. Serrated trigger and checkered hammers are jeweled. All metal wears a blued finish. “KURT JAEGER MAINZ” is engraved into the left edge of the frames' top strap. The grips are carved with floral scroll design that is similar to the engraving pattern on the metal. Instead of the standard screw attachment for the grips, these works of art have specially fabricated and engraved buttcaps that hold the grip panels in place without the need for screws through the center of the grips. This novel approach leaves uninterrupted grip panels for carving, providing a buttcap for additional engraving. All screw heads are engraved. Front sights are standard rounded blade and rear sights consist of standard notched and grooved frame top straps. These specific S&W Victory Models are 2 of 3 US made firearms engraved and stocked by Kurt Jaeger, apparently as a package for a presently unidentified person, presumably an individual connected to the US Army Air Forces & the Chinese-Burma-India campaign; may have had a last name beginning with the letter “R”. The other firearm in this three WWII-era handgun set is a 1944 Ithaca M1911 described & photographed in another listing. All 3 handguns come in custom wood case. See our other listings for the Ithaca. All three handguns can be stored in a custom quality wooden case hand crafted specifically to accommodate and display the three Jaeger works of art. The case has two levels, the top one being a removable tray. The Ithaca pistol lies in the top tray and the two S & W Victory revolvers lie on the lower level, separated by a wooden divider. The case has green baize lining and bright brass furniture. The case is well crafted and makes a pleasing option for display of these works of art. Very fine as professionally custom embellished. 98% plus of the blue and plum-blue finish remains. There is some minor edge wear, a thin drag line on the cylinder, and some fading on the ejector rod/cylinder pin. The jeweling on the sides of the hammer and trigger retains distinct patterns.
