It is in excellent condition. The bore of is spotless. There are a few nicks in the right side of the barrel, and two minor scratches on the receiver – one on either side. Otherwise the bluing is in excellent condition. The rifle has most likely been used for hunting, though it has been well treated. Despite a couple of mars on the left side of the stock, it is quite beautiful. Please see the pictures above. The barrel is 22 inches long. The date code on the barrel indicates this 742 was produced in July of 1973. Chambered for the famous 30-06 Springfield, this rifle would be affective for use against a wide variety of game ranging from large varmints to large game. The 30-06 was introduced in 1906 as a replacement for the earlier 30-03 round (introduced in 1903). Today more ammo manufacturers offer the.30-06 than any other caliber available, with farm more reloading options available for it than any other round in existence. Available bullets for the 30-06 range from light weight 110gr bullets for varmints, up to heavy 220/240gr bullets for heavy game. Hornady makes some excellent 208/212/220gr bullets for large game hunting. Woodleigh produces a super heavy 240gr bullet designed for penetrating the most dangerous game animals. The Model 742 was designed to be a simple, semi-automatic side-eject rifle (as opposed to top ejection) that could be used anywhere in the United States and be able to do the job regardless of local conditions. By making the rifle eject to the side rather than upward like the M14, any scope could be mounted without fear of ejected brass banging up the scope. Given the 30-06’s wide range of applications, combining the rifle and cartridge made for a very effective combination. The rifle comes with the standard 4-round magazine; however, Triple K makes extended 10-round magazines for those looking for a little more firepower. These fit any of the Remington semi-auto/pump-rifles. Be advised, there are two magazine lengths: one for 308-length cartridges (2.8-inch OAL) and the other for 30-06-length (3.34-inch OAL) cartridges. I have personal experience with the Model 7600, the pump action version in the 35 Whelen round. These guns are fun to shoot, and they make effective hunting rifles. This one is in great condition. If you desire a reliable hunting rifle in a multi-purpose caliber, a Remington 742 in .30-06 is an excellent choice. Sadly, the 742 is no longer made.
