Description: A Stevens "Favorite" Model 1894, in .32 RIMFIRE caliber. It has been expertly refinished and looks as good as the day it left Chicopee Falls. This specific rifle was the subject of an article I wrote for the 2016 edition of Gun Digest entitled "An American Rook Rifle" (tinyurl.com/mwk28hp2 ). Stevens exported Favorites to Britain, mostly in British calibers, but this one stayed in the USA. The "Favorite" was one of the highest-quality single shot rifles of its day, rivaling the British-made rook rifles. This example is a deluxe, special-order rifle, with a full octagonal barrel, a Beach's Patent folding front sight, and a Lyman tang rear sight. It comes in a hard-shell fitted case, and is of course a take-down gun. While the bore isn't pristine it's in very good condition and shoots well, as the image of the target shows. The case contains cleaning tools in a separate compartment.

Although the .32 Rimfire is no longer made and factory ammunition is unobtainable, I include in this sale a kit made by the H&C Company in France for reloading the .32 Rimfire caliber. The durable cases use an "acorn" type blank as a primer. I've also included the heeled bullets used with these cases. Round balls can also be used. Reloaded rounds give accuracy comparable to–or better than–factory ammunition. A packet of reloads is in the case; Dixie Gun Works sells reloadable cases in .32 Rimfire Short that can also be used, and H&C can furnish more of the Long cases. Reloads must be made with black powder or a substitute such as Pyrodex or 777. The Favorite, as delightful as it is, is a weak action and shouldn't be used with any form of smokeless powder.

The "Model 1894" Favorite was made until about 1915; there are no records of serial numbers so I regret that I can't authenticate this rifle as a legal "antique" made before 1899. I think it may well have been, but since I can't be sure I must ask that it be sent to the holder of a Federal Firearms License. A "C&R" (Curios & Relics) license is fine, I can send it directly to someone with a C&R license. It can also be sent to a dealer who will do the transfer.

Please note that I am NOT an FFL holder, so if you choose to use a dealer be certain he will accept it from me. This is perfectly legal but some dealers will insist it come FROM an FFL holder, which the law doesn't require. Any licensed FFL holder can receive a firearm from anyone. If you dealer insists on it coming FROM an FFL holder, the best solution is to find another dealer who understands and follows the law as it is written.

The .32 Rimfire is perhaps the best small game caliber ever made, and it's a shame it's no longer obtainable on the open market. It kills small game cleanly without making a mess of the edible meat. If you have a hankering to hunt small game the way Grandpa did, this is your opportunity!
