The Crown Grade Elsie; one of the finest, most elegant American doubles ever produced. The Crown Grade was certainly a special, “MADE TO ORDER” shotgun, with only 639 made in 12 gauge, 300 or so with ventilated rib, and only 230 with 32” barrels. If you consider loss and damage, there are likely less than 550 Crown Grade 12’s left on the planet, and only A FEW LIKE THIS ONE. What a find we have here in this 1927 vintage Elsie, snRE98305, produced by Hunter Arms Company, with its nicely figured walnut stock, elaborately engraved with rose and scroll background and fine, deeply chiseled bird dogs on either side. The L.C. Smith was the only commercially successful sidelock gun from the glory days of the vintage American double. What a canvas to lay down your art as an engraver, and what a functional, strong, simple action was created in the venerable “Elsie”. THE ENGRAVING ON THIS GUN IS OUTSTANDING, MUCH FINER THAN MOST CROWN GRADES I HAVE SEEN IN MY LIFETIME. This gun is in excellent condition, with mirror bores, excellent factory original checkering and wood finish, 90% factory case color, 99% blue on the 32” M/F ventilated rib barrels that are tight as new on breech face and hinge pin, top lever right of center, excellent screws, properly functioning MILLER SINGLE SELECTIVE TRIGGER (the most reliable single selective trigger for these vintage double guns…the Hunter One Trigger has issues from time to time), and a graceful “TRAP STYLE” beavertail forend. L.C. Smith guns configured in this manner were referred to as “TRAP CONFIGURED” guns made for the trap line and live bird games of the day. THIS GUN HAS EVERY FACTORY OPTION OFFERED BY L.C. SMITH. These Elsies make fantastic sporting clays guns, weighing 8lbs. and balanced just ahead of the hinge pin for steady swinging. They are equally at home in the field anywhere high-volume shooting or game requiring heavy loads and tight chokes are favored. Think about dove fields, duck blinds, turkey hideouts, or standing at the end of that cornfield in South Dakota this fall. Built on the Regular weight frame with a reinforced forend lug, the gun is made to shoot. This gun is a VFI CERTIFIED GUN, with a 90 mechanical warranty, having been stripped to its smallest parts, all cleaned in the Ultrasonic cleaner, each part scrubbed and inspected for integrity and function, lubricated and reassembled.
