Description:
This is a nice Colt Single Action Army revolver in .44 WCF (Frontier Six Shooter") with 7.5" barrel, and hand made two-piece walnut grips. The grips were probably made before commercial two-piece grips were widely available. The original grips were one piece walnut, and there was no steel pin hole in the trigger guard strap for the later hard rubber ones. These grips were carefully inletted to fit the inside of the back strap. It was shipped to Simmons Hardware, St. Louis, Missouri, on August 15, 1883, with 49 other guns. Lettered originally as nickel, the only remaining silver is under the grips on the trigger guard and back strap. The outside is used and worn, mostly gun metal gray in color, but not badly pitted, and shows no nickel. It is in mechanically fine condition with a very good bore. It came from north western Montana, within 50 miles of the Canadian border. The Colt and holster with it had been in the same family for decades. This is a fine cowboy era piece and an ANTIQUE. No FFL is necessary.
The holster and matching belt are vintage pre-1900 with "spots" (brass studs), and in good, supple, well oiled condition. Rigs with spots are relatively rare and consequently sought after by western leather goods collectors. This one has been with the Colt for a very long time, and though it would probably fetch $500 on the market by itself, it would be a shame to separate them. The belt has been shortened from the buckle end at some point, and snaps have been added to hold the buckle and keeper in place. The belt measures 31" to the nearest hole and 36" to the furthest. Interestingly, it is a gun belt but not a cartridge belt, and was probably made by a harness maker.
