We’ve always had high regard for Spanish shotguns, and here is one of the best. From its home domicile here in Southwest Tennessee comes this specimen of Stoeger Arms’s Zephyr field grade side by side. Manufacturer was Victor Sarasqueta, S.A., of Eibar, Spain. Importer was Stoeger Arms of New York City, and this shotgun came in before Stoeger moved to New Jersey. Date code is not visible, but from its AM113000 range serial number, it was manufactured in 1961 or 1962. Metal construction is entirely steel, with Spanish Walnut Buttstock and beavertail forend. Chambering is 12 gauge, 2 3/4 inch or shorter shells only. Barrels are 27 1/2 inch Modified Right and Full Choke Left tube, .720 and .685 at the muzzle respectively. Sight system is figure 8 dual ivory beads, mounted on a serrated solid rib that sits .20 above the barrels at the forend. Barrel has split automatic ejectors, and this distinguished the 4E from its plain extractor mates. Triggers are double steel smooth faced, and pull at a crisp 4 1/2 to 5 pounds each. Stock drop is the correct 1 1/2 at the comb and 2 1/2 at the end of the buttpad, with a 1 inch right hand cant. This shotgun will not be southpaw friendly, then. Length of pull is 14 1/8 inches from the forward trigger face to the end of the period correct red double spaced Pachmayr recoil pad. Weight empty is 7 pounds 15 ounces, with center of gravity at the pivot pin. Surface detractions are moderate on this shotgun. Barrel bluing is strong throughout, with faint amounts of occasional freckling and edge whitening. Nickel engraved receiver shows weakness and freckling, but evenly so. Buttstock and forend scouring are minimal. We rate this Sarasqueta as Very Good, 80 percent vicinity by our estimate, but photos ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean with no dimples and no pitting. This is one of the best Spanish shotgun manufacturers, and this 4E variant is one of the most desirable.
