After decades of building rifles, I decided to make my childhood dream rimfire. I wanted a real rifle, not a boy’s gun and I wanted a single shot. Firepower wasn’t the goal as I wasn’t worried about charging squirrels.; I wanted class and elegance like the rifles I dreamed of as a kid in the 60’s. The Ruger #1 seemed the obvious choice but it wasn’t offered in rimfire. But a gunsmith in Pennsylvania figured out how to do a conversion and an article was published in the Rifleman. That’s all I needed. The breech block link arm was first lowered .100 to offset the firing pin for the rimfire. The hammer was cheesecaked to reduce weight and increase lock time. The left action sidewall was reduced a bit to facilitate loading for the left handed shooter (me). A new steel trigger was made and torch colored to replace the pot metal original. The trigger weight spring was adjusted internally so no ugly screws were put in the lovely trigger radius. This new trigger is like the early Ruger ones which still had the sear adjustment boss on the internal trigger frame. Nice crisp pull, about 2 lbs. A new Douglas Premium barrel was fitted and chambered with a tight field chamber. Probably the most difficult job was welding up and fitting the new extractor/ejector. Very tight work indeed and it functions beautifully. Next the quarter rib was hand fit from stock and machined to take Control Custom rings. A nice bit of metal sculpting actually. The rings were modified and fit to the lowest profile possible and to maintain the lines and aesthetics of the rifle. So many fine classic rifles are ruined by abhorrent scope mounts and poor scope choice. The stock blank, a true exhibition piece of Juglens regia from California is classic smoke and honey and was $1,000.00 back in the early 90’s. It allowed only one layout option, one which puts the grain at the action face a little offset from perfect but this is a rimfire and recoil is hardly a concern. As I’m a left hand shooter the stock has an appropriate cheekpiece but there is no cast. My right handed shooting partner for years (we had our own 100 meter small bore / silhouette / benchrest range) regularly shot the Ruger. LOP is 13 3/8”, weight 7lb 6oz with scope. The excellent case coloring was done by Heinzelmann in New Jersey. It is cyanide coloring and has faded little over the years. I do not know if they are still active but at the time they had figured out a way to do cyanide without the wave pattern so common to that process. The rest of the metal was cold rust blued, the ultimate finish. I then sent the rifle to Marvin Huey for one of his amazing cases. Only this case is cherry and leather, not oak. And, as hoped for. the cherry has taken on the wonderful, rich red patina of oxidation so desired in this wood. The case includes a complete set of case accessories and turnscrews made by Powell of England. Today just the case and fittings alone would be over $3,000.00. The Ruger is quite accurate, even with high velocity ammo, and a delight to shoot. The barrel interior is pristine. It is the ultimate rimfire for the shooter who appreciates, quality and craft. The price is a steal considering the work. I would like it to go to a good home. Naturally you will have questions and want to view quality photos so don’t hesitate to call. I have sold most of my custom rifles over the past few years to very satisfied GA members and am happy to provide references. I have lowered the price on this amazing rifle. You will never come close to finding anything like this for so little an investment.
