Production figures indicate that this was made in December of 1942. The rifle was purchased at an estate sale and is in excellent condition: the wood is not only without the usual dings, gouges, splits, cracks, and bumps-and-bruises, it still retains that dark walnut finish that was characteristic of the M1. It's got a lovely satin finish to an all-intents-and-purposes immaculate set of wood furniture. I believe it's been refinished, but I don't see the "P" that I would expect on an arsenal refinish. I believe the previous owner had this professionally done. The stock appears to be the original wood because it's all matching. The metal appears to be untouched because there's some loss of bluing here and there as would be the case with normal wear and tear. The bore gauge (see pictures) shows very minimal wear, and the bore itself looks as if it has had very few rounds through it. We test fired it, and it was grouping 2" at 75 yards with iron sights off of a simple bench rest at the range. Although this is a standard military trigger (SA), it had a really crisp and clean let-off which no doubt helped with accuracy. This may have been an officer's "bring-back" and passed down as a family heirloom. We bought it at auction without any family history so I can't be more definite than that. I've put a reproduction sling on it to complete the rifle (it had the standard cleaning kit in the butt stock--segmented rifle cleaning rod and the folding take-down tool along the with jar of grease). I don't think I need to tell you how valuable and collectible these Garands are becoming, and this one is, as the car dealers like to say, in "like new" condition. If you'd like more pictures, we'd be happy to send them along to you. Also, if you've bought before on GunsAmerica, we can offer individual lay-a-way plans. Thanks for looking, and good luck bidding.
