This all original Enfield is complete with new sling and spike bayonet with scabbard. This particular example survived the war with only token damage: there is one small arsenal repair to the butt stock at the toe (upper) end near the brass butt plate. Other than that, the wood furniture is in impeccable condition: no cracks, tear outs, chips, rips, or dents. The metal is free of rust and pitting, and the bore is clear with sharp rifling and deep grooves. This is a great example of one of the world's truly outstanding battle rifles (some have even gone so far as to say it was the best, but we'll leave that argument for a later time), a stunningly eye-catching example, to boot. Surviving examples of the war, like this Enfield No. 4, are rapidly fading into history, just like the men who carried them. As the memory of the war grows dimmer and dimmer, all that we have left to hold on to are the tangible relics of the service and sacrifice of the men who fought the war. This is one of those relics.
