Its X ZZ Date Code identifies this Remington Sportsman 48 recoil operated auto as part of December 1953’s production. 1953 was the sixth year of production for this solid, reliable workhorse Remington whose production was begun in 1948, and continued until it was totally eclipsed by the slightly heavier, but much more pleasant shooting, Model 1100. Type is recoil operated semi-auto Shotgun, 2 3/4 inch shells only, 4 + 1 capacity; matte blue finish; checkered walnut stock and forend in RKW Du Pot glossy finish. Length of pull from the center of the smooth faced blue steel trigger to the end of the period correct Pachmayr F325 recoil pad is 13 1/2 inches; barrel is 30 inch Full Plain with steel ramp beadsight, and the .685 muzzle diameter is tighter than many European full chokes from the period. Shell carrier or floorplate only exhibits moderate operation streaking. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Surface detractions are moderate at most. Bluing shows faint amounts of toned spotting and whitening on the lower sections of the receiver, faint amounts of operation whitening on the chamber area of the barrel, and one or two small whitened places from gun rack contact about 8 inches back of the muzzle. Scouring to the buttstock is moderate with faint amounts of finish lizarding visible only in direct light; forend shows minimal wear, mostly on the edges. We rate this Sportsman 48 as Very Good, close to Excellent, since no more than 15 to 20 percent of its finish is affected by wear or weathering. On many traditionalists’ view, it is a better shotgun than its successor 1100 since its recoil system is less likely to malfunction. We’re offering it for only $ 259.95.
