Bavarian/Austrian Used WWII US Carbine Guns > Rifles > Military Misc. Rifles US > M1 Carbine
Description: If you have not heard of this variation of the US M1 Carbine, just do a search for "US Carbines in Germany and Austria", and the entire, fascinating story will come up. At the end of WWII, Gen. George S. Patton Jr. was made Military Governor of Bavaria. All firearms in Germany that could be found, had already been confiscated by US troops, to include those in the hands of German police forces. Gen. Patton knew that to keep peace, he must arm the German police, over whom he had control. Gen. Patton was able to get permission to issue to the various German Police Depts., US M1 Carbines and some handguns. The Germans were told to engrave on the left side, top of the receiver, the name of their agency and this was to be in English. The Forestry Police got some of these carbines, but claimed that in the dark forest of Germany, the peep sight was useless to them. So, they mounted a "V" rear sight just forward of where the bolt closes and the left side of the sight is stamped with a easily recognizable "H". You may be able to see that "H" marked sight in my photo. The early war Carbine peep sight that flips from long distance to close in zero, is retained in the usual place, to the rear of the bolt. During the 1950s some of the German held US M1 Carbines were sold to Austria to be used by their ski patrols and other Austrian police forces. The Austrians ground off the German police identification from the left, top receiver rail and used the last four digits of the Carbine's serial number on various parts so that they could identify them. This one shows the last four on: the wood of the sling slot, Op Rod and the top of the bolt. The upgraded barrel band is marked "SI". The stock is the early Hi-Wood type. The hand guard maker's mark on the underside of the hand guard is "RMC". The hand guard is the early WWII type with only two rivets. The receiver is by IBM of Poughkeepsie, NY and this carbine was in IBMs first run in 1943, with serial number 3651XXX. The barrel is marked as being made by IBM. The Stock's sling slot shows IBM as maker, being stamped "BR-B". Both the hammer and trigger assembly are marked as IBM. After the Austrian police upgraded to their own rifles/carbines, these historically marked US M1 Carbines were returned to the US military and sold through the release program to qualifying US citizens. This is a rare opportunity to own a piece of US military history. The carbine is in fantastic condition and is fully functional with live ammunition. Ask all questions and I will answer promptly.
