Description: ROBERT G. OWEN classic pre-WWII Springfield created in the late 1920's in Sauquoit, NY. This rifle was sold by Springfield Armory in January 1928 to a prominent Oak Park, Illinois physician whose family owned huge landholdings in the Florida Panhandle. R.G. Owen, one of America's premier custom gunsmiths, turned the rifle into a plain but elegant sporter. The barrel is engraved "R.G. Owen Sauquoit, NY". Serial number is 12777554 on the bolt and Springfield sales card furnished by Springfield Research. Receiver number has been removed. It has a German butt plate with trap and originally had a grip cap with trap which was missing and has been replaced with New England Custom Gun cap. Sling swivel bases are also NECG made. See Michael Petrov's, "Custom Gunmakers of the Twentieth Century" for information on Owen and his firearms. Bore is excellent and head spacing correct. The European walnut wood and metal have been refinished at some time in the past. There is a small chip missing behind the receiver tang and an aluminum Williams rear sight added that should be removed or replaced.
