3,240,000 serial number range confirms that this Saginaw Gear Works carbine is original World War II. Its barrel is not dated. Surface detractions are minimal; only finished-over roughness on the bayonet lug assembly's top portion. Muzzle area shows faint whitening. Stock is pristine figured walnut with a glossy finish, perhaps a refinish. Buttstock cartouche, however, is strong and its edges show. Trigger group side protrusion at the edges is only moderate, so if the buttstock has been refinished, there was not any significant amount taken off from sanding. Metal is Excellent throughout, no signs of pitting or any residue whatsoever on the internal surfaces that are covered by the stock. Surface stampings are as follows: M / WA Winchester; trigger group appears to be Winchester, weakly stamped; operating handle – gas block assembly marked with the letter capital Y; hammer Winchester, letter W; bayonet lug assembly J.M.O.; rear sight stamped PI on right side. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Regardless of whether the buttstock and bayonet lug have been refinished or whether the lug was originally rough cast, this is one of the nicest carbines we've had in the past several decades.
