Lefever H Grade 12ga. – GREAT, HONEST GUN, MIRROR BORES, FACTORY
Most of the lower grade guns from any maker tend to be worn beyond desirability. Worse yet, they have been “fixed” and “restored” by basement tinkerers that relinquish the gun to a state of unworthiness to anyone who knows fine vintage American double shotguns. This Lefever, serial number 26609 made in 1898 (antique, no license required, ship to your door step), is one of the lucky ones. It remains intact, with just light normal wear over its 114 years of service, with all original parts, original checkering, uncut wood, PERFECT BORES ON THE UNDAMAGED TWIST STEEL BARRELS, nice case color, all in fine condition. This is an affordable entry into the antique shotgun market and is ready to be used afield and at the clays course for another 100 years. It has been clearly established that twist steel barrels with unaltered bores and no damage are safe to shoot with modern loads. This set of barrels is so clean inside and out, with really thick barrel walls, that I would not hesitate to shoot any 3 ¼ dram equivalent loads with up to 1 1/4oz. of shot. And then we have great companies like RST Shotshells ( ) and Polywad ( ) that will ship low pressure shells right to your door for less than they can be bought for at the local sports shop.
The 30” barrels have mirror bores choked F/F (.032/.029, can be opened to your specs for $60 per barrel), with an internal bore diameter of .740/.741 (as shipped from the factory; Lefever was known to have overbored barrels, especially in their early guns), minimum barrel wall thickness of 45 thousandths right and left barrel (that is THICK AND STRONG), with 95% pattern showing, 2 5/8” chambers (can shoot 2 ¾” shells with no worries; if you don’t know why, ask. Chambers and cones can be lengthened for $140 if you so choose), barrels ring like chimes with tight ribs, no dents or dings, just a great set of barrels all the way around.
The action retains 50% case color, excellent screws, barrels tight on breech face, lever right of center, excellent double triggers, trigger guard a pleasant silver, extractors, again, all in excellent overall condition.
The wood is in superb condition for its age, with strong checkering showing some dings, superb wood to metal fit, original butt plate and grip cap, 14 1/8 LOP, 2 ¾” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb for excellent dimensions, neutral cast, no cracks or repairs anywhere.
This is a big, 8lb. 6oz. gun that balances nicely ½” ahead of the hinge pin. It is a superb waterfowl, turkey, or pheasant blocking gun as is, or use for an affordable vintage sporting clays gun. If you follow my listings you realize I am a very picky, knowledgeable double shotgun nut that usually showcases fine high grade shotguns. This lower grade Lefever is here because I could not pass up such a clean, honest, excellent vintage Lefever. You now have an opportunity to own a fully warranted, super strong shotgun for under $1000.
There are more photos upon request. There is a 30 day mechanical warranty on this gun.
