From its G760000 range serial number, this 500A left New Haven in mid 1976. Manufacturer, of course, is O.F. Mossberg & Sons of New Haven, CT. Model is 500A, worthy ancestor to the All Purpose series. Type is pump or slide action shotgun with double steel slide bars. Construction is steel barrel, magazine tube, bolt, trigger and internal parts all built into an alloy receiver, with polymer top tang safety and trigger group housing. Forend is corn cob type serrated American hardwood, with matching smooth semi gloss finish buttstock. Metal finish is blue steel barrel, black semi gloss anodized receiver, and chrome plated bolt and shell carrier. Chambering is 12 gauge; Barrel is 3 inch chambered blued steel, 26 inch Plain with factory C-Lect® Variable Choke whose muzzle constriction ranges from .670 Full to .725 Cylinder Bore. Sight is original factory low profile hex base stainless bead type, and serves to hold down the C-Lect choke guide plate. Magazine capacity is 5 rounds of 2 3/4 inch shells, or 4 rounds of 3 inch shells, 5 + 1 fully loaded capacity on 2 3/4 inch. It will accept the distinctive Mossberg adapter plug to bring a hunter in compliance with 2+1 shot regulations. Plug is Not included on this specimen. Weight empty is 7 pounds, with center of gravity about 1 inch forward of the receiver. Buttstock measures 13 7/8 inches from the trigger face to the end of the serrated factory butt plate. Stock drop is 1 1/2 inches at the comb, and 2 1/2 inches at the butt, with a right hand cant of about 3/4 inch. This 500A will accept any standard 12 gauge 500 Mossberg Barrel with a 13 7/8 inch 5 shot magazine tube. Surface detractions on this 500A are minimal to moderate, principally a half dozen streaks on the right side of the receiver and forend rear. We rate it as Very Good, 80 to 85 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright and clean. We estimate this Mossberg has been fired fewer than 200 times, from the absence of any wear on its slide arms.
