Eickhoff, George E. Goll, and Oscar V. Payne. General John Thompson was the namesake for the gun, as it was his idea based on the need for a small but powerful gun. It was initially intended to be used to sweep trenches. The solder would approach a trench and be able to rapidly dispense of the enemy. Organized crime found it to be just the ticket to out gun the police. Police Departments were forced to purchase the Thompson as they were out gunned. The 1927 Thompson Semi-Automatic Carbine was developed about the same time as the 1928 machine gun., by converting a full auto 1921. Very few, possibly as many as 50 were ever made, even fewer were ever sold. This model was designed for police departments that desired a high capacity and accurate weapon, but did not want a fully automatic machine gun fearing that with untrained officers might not let go of the trigger. The 1927 used 20 round magazines, as well as the L (50 round) and C (100 round) drums, and was chambered for 230 grain ball ammo, in .45 caliber.
