Here is a well made Italian replica of the Enfield style carbines used most famously by the Confederate Army and Cavalry during the War Between the States. This specimen bears similarities to the Cook & Brother, Murray, and Enfield Carbines used by the Confederates, but it has small cosmetic departures from each of them. Manufacturer is Pietta of Italy, with the PR locality marking on the side of the barrel. Importer was F.I.E. of Miami, from the AE date code, in 1979. Barrel is 24 inch blued steel, .58 Minie Ball Percussion caliber. Hammer and lock plates are color casehardened, with steel trigger, blue steel screws and sling swivels and trigger. Furniture and front sight are solid brass. Rear sight is two position leaf type with flat head screw for stability. Stock assembly is original Italian hardwood, walnut finish but probably not walnut. This rifle comes to us from the Collection of an Ohio Southern sympathizer. Surface detractions are minimal, with small whitened spots on top of the barrel and small contact marks here and there. We rate it as Very Good, perhaps even Excellent, 85 to 90 percent vicinity by our estimate. Photos, at any rate, ought to suffice for our distinguished shoppers to judge finish grade for themselves. It is certainly excellent mechanically. Bore and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Its owner informed us he had never used more than 65 grains of FFG in a load. Replacement pricing on similar, current production carbines from our friends at Dixie Gun Works and elsewhere exceed $1,000 apiece. Were offering the Confederate type musketoon in the photos, however, for only $ 589.00.
