Here are Remington’s introductory remarks about their new 597 semi-auto, chambered in the powerhouse .22 Winchester Magnum Caliber: Model 597 Magnum rimfire rifles feature a stagger-stacked eight round capacity, die cast metal magazine with an innovative last shot "hold open" design. Receivers are grooved for standard rimfire mounts and drilled and tapped for Weaver-style bases. Featuring a sturdy, matte black synthetic stock with swivel studs and 20-inch sporter contour barrel with satin blued finish, the Model 597 Magnum Synthetic autoloading rimfire is designed for the rigors of high-volume shooting. The clean barrel is button rifled with a twist rate of one turn in 9 inches with six lands and grooves. We have test fired our first specimen with both Winchester and Fiocchi ammunition. It cycled all eight rounds perfectly, but would not cycle correctly with a full magazine and one in the chamber. So this is only an 8 round rifle, not a nine round, from our experience thus far. The jury is out for accuracy; that was not what we were testing for when we test fired our first specimen. The magazine is metal, and that is a good thing, the magazine spring, however, looks anemic to us, so a person would not need to leave one of these magazines sitting for weeks at a time fully loaded from our limited experience of one gun so far.
