There are certain things in the world of collectible shotguns that make an impact on desirability and value. Odd configurations, condition, and oh yes...the very first one made of a particular model. The first Colt 1911, the first Winchester Model 1873, guys would die to fall into either one. Now I know that the Iver Johnson Hercules is NOT a Colt or Winchester. But it was a maker of well respected guns in the early days of the 20th century and an important part of America's firearm heritage. In the world of vintage American doubles, the .410 bore has always been highly sought after and costly. Of the big 5 makers, only Ithaca, Parker, and L.C. Smith produced the .410, and in miniscule numbers. To purchase one of the above guns in good factory original condition, the price tag starts at $5000 and in the case of the Parker, exceeds $20,000! Enter the Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works Hercules Grade side by side in .410 bore. With its case colored frame, checkered walnut stocks, and rust blue barrels it was a quality gun at an affordable price. They surface occasionally in good condition for about $2000, a bargain .410 vintage American double for sure. This gun is a COLLECTORS DREAM, SERIAL NUMBER ONE, FIRST ONE OFF THE PRODUCTION LINE AND IN EXCELLENT ORIGINAL CONDITION. Made in about 1927 when they first appeared in the Iver Johnson catalogs, all parts are factory stamped "01". The wood has had varnish put over the original factory finish some decades ago, but all other finishes are honest factory finishes. The gun was very well cared for, with just a little carry wear on the barrels and bottom of the receiver. Screws and wood are in excellent condition. Not a split or chip anywhere in the wood. A great little gun for your shooting fun and a real find for your collection. An honest gun like this will always be desirable and a good investment.
