Serial number 107325. All matching.. The soldiers name is crudely inscribed above and to the left of the wedge on the left side of the barrel. Inscription reads " J. Rolfs". Now that would be James Rolfs from Davenport Iowa.. He was a farrier( in charge of horse)who served with Company I of the 3rd Iowa cavalry. He enlisted on September 18, 1863 as a private. On December 11th, 1863 he was mustered into Company I , Iowa 3rd Cav. He was mustered out on August 9th 1865 at Atlanta Georgia. James Rolfs was born in Germany. Documents show he was born in 1823, interestingly he came to the United States more than likely to escape the unrest( Civil War) in 1848, little did he know we had our own little party brewing here.During his service the Iowa 3rd Cav,participated in many engagements throughout the south.Documents show no less than 41 of the regiments72 total fights. Memphis T.N., Tupelo, M.S., Atlanta, G.A.,Big Blue M.O., and Mine Creek Kansas just to name a few. This complete package includes extensive documentation including Rolfs soldier history, enlistment in Davenport I.A. his regiments Assignments, Casualty reports for each engagement, Regimental Experience Chart and a full Regimental History for the 3rd Iowa Cav.In addition:Many post war references to living in Nebraska, pension records card #175456 , listed a an invalid in 1885. His marriage record from January 1866. And finally a copy of a picture of his gravestone in Elkhorn Nebraska . Born 1823 in Germany and died in 1901 in Nebraska, The proper German spelling is present on the grave stone " Juehom Rolfs" This 1851 Navy is well worn, hardly any scene on the cyl. But still functions and will cock as it should. The cyl. is still very tight. This would make an excellent addition to any Civil War collection . Especially one that includes Id'ed or Iowa pieces. It truly is an artifact with a story. I will package very well, insure, and send priority mail USPS.
