FFL is required for shipment of this rifle, or 4473 form for walk-in pick up. The word, Modern Muzzleloader, conjures up all manner of images, and that word is even part of the name of one Company. Harrington & Richardson, however, was the first real kid on the block to depart from nineteenth century styling. It introduced the Huntsman in 1970, then all H&R production went on hiatus. H&R / NEF reintroduced a substantially improved version in 2002, and this one is from the first year of its reintroduction, a brief lived run again. Manufacturer was H&R 1871, New England Firearms of Gardner, MA. Type is breech primed muzzle loading rifle. Construction is steel barrel, receiver, trigger, hammer, and internal parts; with black polymer sights and trigger guard, and classic Huntsman brass and wood ramrod. Stock and forend are dark stained American Hardwood. Barrel is 28 inch, with 6 groove right hand 1:28 rifling, favors sabots or maxi balls. Sight system is polymer screw mounted blade with 700 style windage and elevation adjustable rear. Note that the front sight is missing its fiber optic insert. Scope bases is Weaver type 4 slot, mounted with 3 screws onto the chamber area of the barrel, and this rifle comes with a new FM brand electronic red dot green dot sight. Offset hammer spur is intact. Ignition is 209 shotgun primer, and we are including factory H&R primer holders. Note that the barrel is vented at the breech for safety reasons. Mechanism is thumb breech for priming, with transfer bar trigger and hammer mechanism. The .300 smooth face steel trigger breaks at its original 6 1/2 pounds, with minimal felt creep. H&R triggers are gunsmith adjustable only. Buttstock length of pull is 14 1/4 inches from the trigger face to the end of the black factory 3/4 inch recoil pad. Overall length is 39 1/2 inches. Weight empty including the scope is 7 1/2 pounds, with center of gravity just forward of the barrel pivot pin. External surface detractions on this rifle are minimal to moderate, principally some toning on the receiver’s case coloring. We rate it finishwise as Very Good, 85 percent vicinity. Bore shows about 25 percent light internal pitting, but rifling is still clearly defined. Mechanism is clean and functional. This rifle is collectable in its own right, just as its 1970s / 1980s ancestors were. We’re offering it for only $ 189.00. This rifle is NOT C&R Eligible.
