Photos show a specimen of the most traditional current production variant of the Smith & Wesson Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless, the 686-6 Stainless Full Lug with round butt L-frame grip frame. Barrel is 4 inch full lug Stainless and it is a fully shrouded one piece barrel just like the revolver was when it was introduced in 1983. Its introduction spelled the end of the much pricier Colt Python. This revolver comes with its S&W Logo marked, Hogue Factory Combat Finger Groove grips. This Sixth-Engineering-Change L Frame has the strengthened frame, beveled thumb latch, internal lock, and Case Colored MIM Hammer and Trigger with floating firing pin. Hammer is .375 serrated spur, and the trigger is .312 smooth combat. Hammer is flat face to mate the floating firing pin. This is the conventional 6 round cylinder capacity variant, S&W product code 164222. Caliber is .357 Remington Magnum and .38 Smith & Wesson Special interchangeably. Construction, with the exception of selected internal parts and the sights, is entirely stainless steel. Sight configuration is Red Ramp front and white outline rear, fully windage and elevation adjustable. Weight empty is 39.7 ounces. The -6 variant not only has the classic Smith & Wesson transfer bar safety to prevent accidental firing from dropping or bumping, it is also equipped with Smith & Wesson's patented internal lock and two keys. Replacement price on the 686 Stainless 4 inch, if a person can even find one, is upwards of $900 in our area. The first new 686 we ever got, sold for $800 in 1983.
