Description: W&C Scott, Year 1875, 8 Gauge, Weight 14lbs 12oz, SN# 20836

THIS IS AN AMAZING FIND! This W & C Scott and Son 8 bore side x side with Jones underlever lock system retains nearly all of its original finish, with 97% vivid factory case color, 98% Damascus patter on the 32” barrels, mirror bores with no pitting, tight ribs, clear, sharp and elegant engraving, superb fit of wood to metal, all parts of the gun and all finishes applied by the factory in 1875! Anyone who cherishes the BIG BORE WATERFOWLERS recognizes most were used hard as market hunting and lack little factory finishes. Not only is this 8 bore rare in numbers because of the gauge, but the condition is as fine as you are likely to see in your lifetime. William Scott was a Birmingham gunmaker that began his own trade name as early as 1834 with the opening of his firm “William Scott Gunmaker”. By 1840 his brother Charles joined him, and by 1858 his two sons, hence the moniker “W & C Scott and Sons”. They maintained London showrooms from 1872 until 1899, and that is the reason for the London address on the barrels. Known as a gunmaker of the highest quality, the Scott firm and later the Webley and Scott merged group supplied parts and services to virtually all the best London gunmakers. This gun, sn20836 built in 1875, is a great example of the company’s product, having delivered 146 years of service and remains in fully functional, tight, sound condition ready for another century of use. The gun is in remarkable condition, with superb wood-to-metal fit of its nicely figured English walnut stock, no cracks, splits, or repairs to the wood at all, perfect screws, action tight on the breech face and hinge like a new gun, and the 32” Damascus barrels have no dings or marks (a few light handling marks), tight ribs, maker’s name and address engraved on the top rib still clear and sharp. The minimum barrel wall thickness measures 48 thou right barrel and 42 thou left barrel at the thinnest spot on either barrel. The barrels are near perfect save for their natural age showing. The action has immaculate engraving as executed in the finest British tradition in 1875 showing no wear at all. The wood has beautiful figure, with drop points and hard edges still crisp, factory original checkering still sharp, the full-length trigger guard tang terminates at the ornate horn grip cap in fine gun fashion. Even the steel buttplate retains most of its factory case color. The mechanics are excellent with strong springs, crisp triggers, rebounding hammers, all in great shape. Even at 14 3/4lbs. the Brits still managed to balance this gun on the hinge pin! Ammunition is still available for 8 bore guns (Gamebore in Great Britain) and empty hulls can be found. You can still take an 8 bore out to shoot pests and non-game birds (crows, pigeons, starlings, etc.) in most states, so you can shoot this giant gun if you choose! I have never seen a higher condition British 8 bore gun and this is not an entry level hardware gun. It has fine Damascus, fine engraving, and well figured wood with best checkering and drop points.
