The Ruger SP-101’s Debut at the 1989 SHOT Show in Dallas marked the first successful muscle pocket revolver with Magnum Power. Here is Ruger’s SP101 snub with factory pocket hammer. Manufacturer is Sturm Ruger, Newport NH Plant. Type is full time double action pocket revolver. Construction is entirely steel, with stainless barrel, hammer, trigger, and cylinder, and stainless and carbon steel internal parts, with rubber grips. Barrel is one piece full lug 2 1/4 inch, with 1:18.75 five groove right hand rifling. Front sight is pinned in black steel serrated blade, with frame integral fixed notch rear sight. Frame top strap is .195 thick and .590 wide, substantially more than the competitor Smith & Wesson model 60. Cylinder is swingout 5 shot, with Ruger’s triple front and rear locking mechanism. Chambering is .38 Smith & Wesson Special and .357 Remington Magnum calibers interchangeably. Trigger is .310 smooth face combat stainless, and photo specimen pulled at a 10 pound vicinity, 7/8 inch two stage motion. Hammer is .310 smooth spurless factory pocket type. The hammer will not stand for single action firing. The rationale for this setup is so that an operator does not go into a tense situation with the hammer cocked. All Ruger Revolvers have a transfer bar internal safety device. Ignition is floating firing pin. Grip frame is GP / SP stem type, with 1/4 inch of rubber between the grip frame and operator’s palm, with serrated lateral polymer inserts. Weight empty is 25 ounces, with center of gravity at the rear cylinder face. Cylinder diameter is 1.355 inches; height measures at 4 1/2 inches; and length is 6 1/2 inches from the muzzle to the heel of the grip butt.
