Description: This is an original 2nd model U.S. 1803 Harper's Ferry .54 caliber rifle. The first model was made between 1803 and 1815. The second model with some slight ( 2 " longer barrel)variation was made fr, 1815 to 1820. The total made is 15,703. Barrel length is 36", the earlier production had a barrel length of 31 3/4" to 33 1/2". The stock length is 30 1/2", earlier production was 26 1/2". Overall length is 52", Earlier it was 47". Blade front sight, open type rear sight. Sliding key secures the stock. Rib under the barrel with both ramrod guides( ferrules) present. No provisions for a bayonet. The lock has an intregal forged flash pan with fence at rear. Brass mountings. Metal parts were originally finished bright. most all of the original color worn off the barrel, barrel rib and ferrales. Walnut stock with small check rest. Brass patch box on right side. All markings are correct. Cartuche is visible. This specimen was made too late for the War of 1812 but is in the timeline for conflicts after that time. The ramrod appears totally original. One picture shows the original mainspring with the replacement installed in the lock. Also, I pictures the touch hole in the barrel with the lock out. I believe this piece to be original and not a re conversion based on this evidence pictured. ( My opinion) There is some wood missing ( chips) on the left side on the top and front of the left back lock plate. I have a picture of that, but not posted here. Only a trace of rifling remains. But the bore is clean and free on any rust or deep pitting. Normal I would say for the age of the gun. This piece has great patina and certainly would fill a spot in a collection of U.S. military rifles as it was the first regulation ordinance rifled firearm adopted by the U.S. government. Prior to that the Model 1795 Springfield ( 3 models total ) .69 cal smooth bore was the first actual martial arm adopted . Made with the French Charlieville .69 cal musket as the model. As an aside, it has been believed arguably that some of the early ( 1) first models of the Harper's Ferry accompanied Lewis and Clark. The verdict I think is still out on that one though. I have a couple more good pictures , one of the top of the hammer/ frizzen and another of the side lock that shows a small amount of chipped out wood there. This is a pretty rare gun. I am not happy with the deal unless you are.
