Its CR Date Code puts this Remington 870 Police Wingmaster shotgun at 42 years of age, manufactured in April of 1968. It arrived just as D.C. broke loose into rioting after Dr. King was assassinated, and ever since then it has served and protected our fellow citizens in Prince George’s County Maryland, on patrol with that distinguished county’s Police Department. The Prince George’s armorers and officers have one of the best reputations in the country for maintaining their service weapons. This one is fully traditional 870 Police Cylinder, Bright blue finish with chrome plated shell carrier and serrated corn-cob walnut forend and matching walnut buttstock with original red rubber factory recoil pad. Wood shows extensive scouring, but also shows strong original glossy finish remaining as well. Finish shows more patrol wear than actual use wear, since annual qualification paces usually amount to 20 rounds, we estimate this shotgun has fired fewer than 1,000 rounds in its lifetime, nothing at all for the tried-and-true 870. Original bluing is still quite strong, but with extensive weathering spotting on the receiver. Sides of barrel and magazine tube show moderate operation whitening, and there is some handling dulling and graying to the muzzle end of the barrel. We rate this 870 as Very Good, since about 70 percent of its finish is intact by our estimate. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Note that the chrome plating to the shell carrier and bolt show only moderate surface scouring from loading and unloading. Specs are slide action shotgun, 18 inch cylinder bore bead sight barrel, capacity 4 + 1 rounds of 2 3/4 inch shells, and weight empty 7 1/4 pounds.
