From the fifth year of production for the series comes this Remington 11-87 Special Purpose Auto, the versatile and pleasant-shooting descendant of the workhorse 1100. KL date code dates it to May of 1991, early on in the production of the Special Purpose variants. This one’s finish is special purpose black matte, very much akin to classic military parkerized; and the durable metal finish is what keeps this specimen from showing any more surface wear than it has. Metal detractions only amount to faint weakening to the finish on its sharp edges, and there is some white showing on the edges of the trigger guard. Scouring on the black synthetic early DuPont Rynite stock and forend are minimal. We rate this 11-87 as a strong Very Good, perhaps even Excellent specimen, since no more than 10 to 15 percent of its surfaces are affected by wear in our estimate. Photos ought to suffice for prospective owners to judge finish grade for themselves anyway. It is excellent mechanically. Note that loading streaking to the bottom of the blued finish shell carrier is only moderate. This is a local shotgun, and we estimate it has been fired fewer than 500 rounds. Bore, chamber, and mechanism are all bright, clean, and excellent. Barrel is 26 inch Rem-Choke, and it comes furnished with one brand new extended Improved Cylinder tube, ideal for upland game or steel shot, and Rem-Chokes are commonly available throughout the country. Barrel is Ventilated rib with Ivory colored bead front sight and brass mid-bead. Length of pull on the buttstock is the original 14 inches including the 1 inch thick magnum recoil pad. Weight empty is a well balanced 8 1/4 pounds. Replacement price on the Express Grade 11-87s, similar to this but not with such durable finishes, is $700 apiece or more in our area.
