Listed for sale is a Springfield Trapdoor M70, Model 1870. 50-70 Government. Rifle is type 2 M70. Rifle is in perfect working order. Fires, extracts and ejects as it should. Stock is correct for this model. Has 3 visible cartouches on left flat. Has Box L cartouche behind trigger plate. Stock is not broken. Has NO engravings or initials carved on stock. Has usual dings and dents for a 144 year old rifle. Rifling is deep and sharp, near excellent condition. Left side spoon pin wood area does have a small piece of wood which looks like an original repair done more than 100 years ago. Small piece of wood about an inch long by a eighth inch inlayed over left side spoon pin. Metal has not been cleaned as some do to enhance the looks of the rifle. Metal has a brown matte appearance. Has Model 1870 breechblock and 1870 type sights. Has 1863 dated lockplate. All parts are correct for this model. Rifle has the 1868 rod and rear band. Some early type 2 M70's were made with the earlier Rods and bands. Appears correct for the rifle. 1870 rear band does not fit correctly, so it looks like it was manufactured with the 1868 rear stock band. Rifling is excellent. Not pitted or corroded.
