In a day where the assumption among handgun shoppers is the smaller the better, here is a specimen of the easiest handling, least dangerous, most accurate handguns ever designed or made. From President Reagan's Third Year in Office comes this thoroughly traditional .38 Military and Police Stainless, the Model 64, fifth engineering change. Serial number prefix is ACZ, early 1983 production. Metal surfaces exhibit holster buffing, contact scouring, and some polishing. Matte finish atop frame and barrel has been buffed but is still strong. There are perhaps two dozen tiny pecks here and there along the sides of the barrel, left side of frame, and mostly on the side plate. Yoke screw shows moderate stress from annual armorer servicing. Original grips have extensive wear, but the wear is quite even. Finishwise, we rate this 64 as Very Good, 75 to 80 percent. Photos, however, should suffice for interested parties to judge finish grade for themselves. Note the classic, highly desirable satin stainless hammer and trigger, and their excellent condition. Grips are somewhat later replacement Hogue Square Butt Combat. This 64-5 is Excellent mechanically. Double action trigger pull is smooth and consistent, and the hammer travels an additional 5 to 10 degrees after the cylinder times on all six positions in double action. On single action, the hammer travels an additional 25 degrees on all six after the cylinder times into place. Single action trigger pull is a crisp 4 pounds. Lateral play to the cylinder is minimal, no more than 1mm total movement by our estimate, both with the trigger relaxed and with the trigger pulled all the way. Blast effect to the under side of the frame top strap directly above the barrel's forcing cone is minimal, a shallow crease that traverses about half the width of the top strap. This revolver has had very few if any +P rounds fired in it. Cylinder face to forcing cone gap is a respectable .008, further evidence that this revolver has not been fired all that much considering the lack of blast cutting to the top strap. This 26 year old service revolver has been well maintained and sparingly used during its career, and it is eminently serviceable for civilian or security use.
