Francotte Model 14E 20ga.- ENGLISH GRIP, SINGLE TRIGGER, BEAVERTAIL
There are many fine “guild” guns made in Belgium, and many shooters and collectors equate a Belgian made gun as a guild gun. However, one maker has stood out for over a hundred years as making the very best this region has to offer; Francotte. This is NOT A GUILD GUN, but a gun manufactured under “best gun” parameters. This gun, serial number 90957, is hand engraved, hand checkered, has wonderful wood, and lots of original finish. A delightful 6lb. 2oz. gun balanced right on the hinge pin, it is a delight visually, mechanically, and in its handling characteristics. Francotte shotguns are a very good value and priced very affordably.
The 26” nitro steel barrels have excellent bores, choked SK/M (.005/.017, can be opened to your specs for $60 per barrel), internal bore diameter of .625/.627, minimum barrel wall thickness of 37 thousandths right, 40 thousandths left, light handling marks in the 97% original blue, ribs are tight and barrels chime, 3” factory chambers, no dents or dings, barrels tight on breech face and hinge like a new gun.
The receiver retains 70% original case color, clear sharp scroll engraving with 70% coverage, near perfect screws, strong well timed ejectors, action tight with lever centered, single trigger with excellent, crisp pull, trigger guard retains 80% niter blue. This gun is in excellent mechanical condition.
The wood is wonderfully figured European walnut with nice oil finish, excellent checkering, 14 3/16” LOP to a 7/8” leather covered pad, 2 5/8” drop at heel, 1 5/8” drop at comb, 3/8” cast off, graceful beavertail forearm with excellent checkering, no splits, cracks, or repairs. Wood makes gun guys weak in the knees, and for a gun in this price range this is extraordinary wood.
This gun has all the desirable extras that really distinguish it as a quality, fully optioned 20 bore bird gun that will be equally at home on the clays range. With English stock, beavertail, single trigger, ejectors, leather pad, 20ga., light weight and perfect balance, it just doesn’t get much better in the under $5000 range. Add to that high original condition and you have a winner.
