Many believe that the original US Army 1911A1, manufactured between 1924 and 1945, was the best "Government Model" that Colt ever made. Originally produced from a John Browning design in 1911 and upgraded slightly after WWI, the 1911A1 served continuously as the US Military's sidearm through two world wars and numerous police actions until the mid-80's. The design remains in widespread active service with numerous police agencies and high end special operations teams both military and civilian over 100 years after its introduction. Serious students of pistol craft even today claim that the 1911-style single action semi auto is the ultimate self defense pistol. Original 1911A1 US Army specimens today easily command prices over $1500. Because these guns are still highly prized by shooters and collectors, Colt in 1991 reintroduced the basic “Government Model” as the 1991 Series with serialization starting where the 1911A1 left off. A direct descendant of the original Colt M1911A1, the 1991 retains the same long trigger, spur hammer, flat mainspring housing and recoil system of the original M1911 design, but has been upgraded with white dot sights, a lowered ejection port, and the modern Series 80 firing system for extra reliability, safety, and ease of use. The Colt 1991 1911A1 reflects decades of refinement to the original Colt / Browning design of the 1911 while still remaining true to the original pattern. That pattern is for a recoil operated, link connected, single action, semi-auto pistol chambered for the .45 ACP cartridge. Colt's 1991 version features rugged all carbon steel construction (frame and slide), finished in Colt's trademark dark, rich blue-black, as are all controls. The frame has been polished on the flats but left textured along the sight plane and other contours such as the fore strap. The 5” barrel has been left in the white. The solid aluminum trigger is crisp. Machined to fine tolerances, the slide and frame are fitted to ensure accuracy and reliability--lockup is tight but the action is smooth! The traditional internal extractor, Series 80 firing system, and lowered ejection port round out the factory performance package on this gun. A flat, grooved mainspring housing, traditional spur hammer, standard grip and thumb safeties, and Rosewood classic “double diamond” checkered grips ensure sure and safe handling. The sights are high-visibility white-on-black 3-dot units, and the rear sight is dovetailed into the slide. The two single stack 7-rd magazines have blue steel bodies, metal followers and standard base plates. With 7+1 rounds on board in these slim magazines, this gun is both a potent self defense package and an outstanding fit for those with smaller hands.
