In 1965 Smith & Wesson made history and kicked off a new product line by developing the Model 60, which was the world's first all stainless steel revolver from a major manufacturer. The Model 60 Chief's Special Stainless was itself a stainless edition of another S&W legend from 1950's, the small "J" frame Model 36 Chief's Special. Introduced at the 1950 convention of the International Chiefs of Police, the snub nose Model 36 was the first ultra compact revolver chambered for the .38 Special. It was an immediate hit and became the grandfather of a whole tribe of diminutive but powerful short barreled "detective-", "hideout-", "backup-", and "bodyguard-special" revolvers, including the Model 60. The Model 60 with its new resistant metallurgy was itself an instant best seller and today still anchors the S&W wheel gun line in its original form or in one of its many offspring variants. Today the Chief's Special Stainless is still offered in the compact "J" frame format, but is now chambered in the more potent .357 Mag caliber (although it can still shoot .38SPL's). This particular specimen has the optional 3" barrel, which offers perhaps the ideal compromise between control, power, and compactness. The additional inch of barrel length on this version over the radical “snub noses”, which are extremely hard to shoot well or comfortably in any caliber, vastly diminishes painful recoil problems and makes the gun just about perfect everyone, including women or others with smaller hands. In my experience, this is absolutely the best format for a small revolver in a serious self-defense caliber. Built on the small "J" frame, this 3" barreled specimen is finished in Smith & Wesson's trademark brushless satin stainless, with contrasting black sight hardware and rubber grip. The rear low profile square outline sight is fully adjustable for elevation and windage and is separated from the serrated ramp front sight by a fully grooved top strap to reduce glare. The smooth target trigger is ungrooved, wide, and easy on the shooter. The .240" semi target hammer is small and unobtrusive to aid in concealment. Both pieces are case-hardened. Built into the left side of the frame are Smith & Wesson's on-board locking mechanism and tapered cylinder release. The slim-line, black, Uncle Mike's round-butt combat rubber grips have molded finger grooves, which should make this gun an outstanding fit for those with smaller hands. Altogether, this is an exceptional carry piece with great looks and a natural feel. Made in USA, the finish and overall workmanship on this gun are outstanding.
