Political Reactions Post Maine Incident

The Lewiston community, and all Americans, deserve nothing less.
Following the tragic mass shooting in Maine, both President Joe Biden and California Gov. Gavin Newsom advocated for increased gun control measures.
Critics, including the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), label these reactions as political opportunism.
They argue that the suggested regulations wouldn’t have stopped the Maine incident.
Specific Proposals Under Scrutiny
Republicans in Maine rejected a bill this year that would have required a waiting period for firearm purchases.

CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb noted Newsom’s call for a waiting period in Maine and Biden’s appeal for “universal background checks” and safe storage laws.
Gottlieb emphasized that neither measure would have averted Wednesday’s events.
“They’ve pounced like craven political opportunists in hopes of using this tragedy to stir up public emotions in an effort to push gun restrictions they’ve been promoting for years,” said Gottlieb.
“Biden has wanted to ban semiautomatic rifles for years,” Gottlieb continued, “when he knows rifles of any kind are involved in a fraction of murders, and he also knows there are millions of law-abiding owners of such firearms who have harmed nobody. Why should honest citizens be penalized for the rampage of one clearly disturbed individual with documented mental health issues?”
Biden’s push to ban semiautomatic rifles also drew criticism, as did his desire to repeal laws shielding gun manufacturers from certain lawsuits.
Residents’ Response to Maine Tragedy
In the aftermath, many local residents reportedly armed themselves for protection.
Lewiston Councilman Robert McCarthy, for instance, said to CNN, “We locked the doors. We grabbed the guns.”
Others expressed regret at not owning firearms. Critics argue Biden’s gun control measures would disarm these concerned citizens.
SAF Points to Missed Warning Signs
The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) highlighted significant warning signs preceding the Lewiston shooting.
They stated that the shooter’s recent history of mental health issues should have barred him from possessing firearms.
Despite threats made by the shooter previously, authorities made no moves to confiscate his weapons.
Concerns About “Gun-Free Zones”
SAF also remarked on the “gun-free zones” where the fatal attacks occurred. These areas, they argue, make individuals vulnerable.
“As we have noted in our educational ad campaign,” said Gottlieb, “gun-free zones essentially make the people in those places nothing more than sitting ducks in a shooting gallery.”
The suspect’s choice of venues, including a bowling alley that explicitly discouraged firearms, is under scrutiny.
As SAF noted, a sign at the door of the bowling alley says, “We kindly ask that you refrain from bringing firearms in this building and we would appreciate it if you left them in your vehicle. Please keep our atmosphere family friendly.”
The Broader Debate on Gun Control
The aftermath of the shooting has intensified the national conversation on gun rights and regulations.
While many on the Left demand stricter laws, many others emphasize the right to self-defense.
As the debate rages on, only time will tell if any changes to the nation’s gun laws will materialize.

The right to self defense is God given… not granted by any government, and thus cannot be rescinded by any government. Secondly, you’re indeed clueless as to why our Founding Fathers enshrined the right of citizens to keep and bear arms. It certainly had NOTHING to do with the British, as they had been defeated years before the Constitution was drafted, not to mention the Bill of Rights. If you are genuinely interested in understanding why we have the 2nd Amendment, I recommend you read David E. Vandercoy’s “The History of the Second Amendment”, available for download online. As to your “modern weapons are exempted” argument, citizens could legally own whatever weapons were available well into the 20th century. Gatling guns and cannons were owned by ordinary people.
Regulating inanimate objects like firearms will never solve any problems. PEOPLE kill people.
