Shoot Better

Absolutely nothing else matters if we can’t hold the rifle steady.

For those who have had the opportunity to shoot somewhere besides a public gun range, you have most likely scrounge around looking for targets minutes before leaving. My homemade steel targets would constantly need to be repaired or replaced and would allow a dangerous amount of spalling to fly in all directions. That is why back in 2018 I started researching steel targets.

There aren’t many things that can make you a better shooter. One of the few items you can buy that can help you get better is a shot timer, and today we are talking about the Competition Electronics Pocket Pro 2.

In my opinion, perhaps the hottest new gun of 2021 is a rimfire. Introduced last month, the new FNH 502 has proven to be everything we needed for this day and age. Why am I, usually the tactical nerd for GunsAmerica Digest, so hot and bothered for a pistol that shoots 22 LR? Well mostly because I have purchased ammunition in the last two years. And even before that, I was very intrigued by the idea of a training pistol in a cheaper caliber. The FNH delivers in a way no one else has to date.

What is the one bit of fitness you absolutely cannot ignore if you want to shoot a pistol well? And for that matter, what do the champions of action pistol shooting all have in common? Grip strength.

A long time ago, people thought only of carrying the gun when considering slinging a rifle. But somewhere along the line of how these things evolve, someone figured out that the sling could also be an aid to precision shooting.

There are many factors in any gun that have an effect on precision, and two guns leaving the assembly line, one right after the other, made with the same batch of components and assembled by the same people, can have drastically different precision characteristics.

As there continues to be a steady progression of technology in long-range shooting, some things never really go out of style, like the rifle data book. I know a lot of people would consider them antiquated and unnecessary in today’s world of accurate ballistic solvers. However, there’s still a very real need to be able to record hard copy data from actually putting rounds down range, which can’t be readily augmented by technology.

Both a red dot sight (RDS) and iron sights can often be installed on the same gun. One advantage of having both is that the iron sights can usually be cowitnessed with the RDS. And that can be done with a long gun or a handgun. The purpose is to facilitate a quick switch to the iron sights in case the RDS fails.
