Montana Governor Wants to Ban ‘Assault Weapons’

Montana Governor Wants to Ban ‘Assault Weapons’

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock basically now supports every gun control measure he opposed when he ran for reelection in 2016.  What’s changed?  The Democrat is eyeing a 2020 presidential run.  (Photo: CNN)

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock wants to ban “assault weapons.”

The Democrat didn’t always feel this way, especially when he was campaigning for reelection in 2016 to remain governor of The Treasure State. But now that he has his sights set presumably on a 2020 presidential bid, he seems to be doing what so many politicians do when it is convenient: evolve on the issue.

Bullock was asked if he would support banning modern sporting rifles on Sunday during an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper.

“You know, I would, Jake,” Bullock admitted.

“If we really step back for a minute, I think most folks — be it in Montana or elsewhere — that are firearm owners want to keep themselves and their families safe,” said the two-term governor. “It’s not unlike folks that say that all of these school tragedies and everything that’s been happening, what do they really want? Those same values.”

Again, just two years ago when he was being challenged by Republican gubernatorial hopeful Greg Gianforte, Bullock was singing a completely different tune.

“Steve Bullock supports Montana’s current laws when it comes to gun rights. He opposes universal background checks, he has expanded gun rights as governor and he will always stand up for the second amendment,” said his campaign in a statement.

Exclusive: When Seconds Count, Armed Teachers Offer Unique Advantages Over Resource Officers

In May of this year, his 2A stance radically changed. In an op-ed published by the “Great Falls Tribune,” he began suddenly arguing for every gun control policy under the sun: “comprehensive background checks,” “red flag laws,” “placing age limits on who can purchase firearms,” banning “bump stocks” and “high capacity magazines.” Bullock went from Charlton Heston to Michael Bloomberg overnight.

He also wrote, “Arming teachers is absurd; period. Those licensed to carry concealed are not trained law enforcement officers, and we shouldn’t confuse the two.”

Incidentally, this abrupt 180-turn coincided with media reports suggesting that Bullock was angling to become the next Democratic nominee for president.

During the CNN interview, Tapper also asked Bullock if he thinks he could beat Trump in 2020. Bullock dodged the question, saying, “Right now, really, what I’m doing is, I have been listening. I have been traveling the country quite a bit, listening probably more than I have been talking. I have shared what we have done in Montana. But, for now, that’s as far as it goes.”

If anyone is actually surprised by his about face pay close attention to what you are feeling; disappointment, deeper distrust of elected leaders, further knowledge that the election process is deeply flawed. Quick question: how in the actual foxtrot did a lefty win in a CLEARLY RED state..???!! Montana is PURE USA. The founding father’s values are still in force there. SO…. #1 clean up the election process…no general mail in without VALID reasons (military service, severe illness, overseas employment..).and each & every ballot accompanied with proper & valid ID, and if they have not arrived by the time polls they are NOT accepted.
This ass.hat, & his partners have been at this for years slowly changing PAC laws that allow $$$$ to flow in to fund their plan of dismantling The Constitution. Big tech has effectively stomped free speech along with media to spin their ideology. I watched incredulously as the last election played out… non of the outcome was accurate in my opinion which is based on work/research, and not headlines.
So now the assault on our weaponry begins. They have a very good chance of winning everything they want….it is ILLEGAL, UNCONSITUTIONAL, and will leave We.The.People as vulnerable as spring lambs.
History has shown this over, and over again for literally thousands of years…. most recently a complete madman (a drug addled junkie I might add) didn’t win an election, was incarcerated for a few years got out, won next election, dressed his crew in Brown Shirts, collected everyone’s weaponry and started his systematic genocide of ALL people not acceptable to his warped views…not just the Jews; every other group, too. Had we not joined in he would’ve been successful to a point we very likely may have fallen, too.
This time, meaning today….now… in our FACE the same thing is happening; they changed election laws in key battleground states by official order (not by legislation; unconstitutional) to allow for extra time for mail in ballots. I won’t get into why this is how blue won so many red counties, but it is how they did it. What gets me is that our officials let it happen. So now have the political power to effect RADICAL change to our most important document: The Constitution.
Face it…The first amendment is out the fvk’n (sorry, an expletive’s appropriate here) window already.
Yesterday 3/11/’21 the first of many gun bills were passed by the house, and are heading to the senate..make noise people..call your officials, and tell them to vote them down…ask all your pals of like mind to do the same. NOW is the time….the 2nd keeps us safe, our neighbors safe, and is a PROVEN deterrent to crime. Crooks think twice if they think there’s a chance they might get killed…..it was true in mid 1700’s, and it’s true today.
The Framers thought deeply,a thoroughly and wrote this document that has afforded more humans freedom to safely, and peacefully live the lives they wish to, and raise children as they see fit right next door to people with very different upbringings, and beliefs IN PEACE. It’s thorough, simple, and exists in no other country.

It is the sworn duty of our elected officials to uphold The Constitution completely, honestly, and to act on behalf of the people.
As a member of We.The.People it is our sworn duty (Pledge of Allegiance) to be committed absolutely in mtruths we hold so dear continue to insure the God given freedoms most of us take for granted today continue for our children, their children, and so on. Watch carefully, act peacefully, and be LOUD about your beliefs to your elected officials.

I wish you all well, and pray for our continued peace, & collective prosperity.

I don’t think Californians outnumber conservative Montanans. Having lived there for a few years in the ’80’s , I didn’t understand why they elected a Dem for governor then or now. Native Montanans seemed very conservative. Boggled my mind as to why they would elect a democrat. I figured they were so complacent that they didn’t bother to vote or they are so naive that they believed a Dem wouldn’t be able to go up against the conservative principals of the majority of the people there. We’ll, they got what they voted for. Dems values are guided by whatever gets them elected.

Just like Gillibrand, who was FOR gun rights before she was against them. These slime sucking parasites are so predictable-which is to say they have no core values of their own. They blow where the political wind takes them….and who suffers for that-us.

Well, he certainly does have it down pat with his use of the code word “values”.
It’s that subtle Orwellian use of a word which lets us know just where a politico is going in a conversation.

Montana should do a recall vote or such and give this political POS just what he wants….an unemcumbered run for democrap prez in 2020 and let LT Gov take over .

    • Michael October 1, 2019, 10:58 am

Well – “We the People” don’t have to worry about that loser Bullock becoming President anytime soon. Now it’s time for Montana citizens to shut down his political career in their state. Here in Texas, we have the same problem. Clowns like Mr. Betatohead (aka “Beto” or “Nacho” as we Now call him (as in “Nacho your Senator”) can present serious challenges unless their past history, and that of their families, are not unearthed and presented to the voting public. Unfortunately, “Nacho” received so much money from out-of-state contributors, he will be out there on the national political scene for a long time. Fortunately he is pretty much done here in Texas (unless maybe he gets a dog catcher position somewhere!).

Well wonder how citizens of Montana feel to being used as a stepping stone to higher aspirations. Instead of devoting his time to runnin Montana, you know damn good and well that everything he does from now on will be towards that goal. He will turn the great state of Montana into another cesspool just like the liberals have done with Denver, Colorado and California. hey Billings how you going to feel when it legal for homeless to shit in the street but you cant get a straw in a restaurant????

  • Mike August 24, 2018, 3:11 pm

Can somebody truly explain to me just exactly what is “an assault weapon” Is? This lying Democrat has no idea. The AR platform alone does not make it an assault weapon anymore than a woman who wears heavy makeup being a whore. You see it is all a mind game with the democrats and sadly most Americans are falling for the mind game these lying people are playing on them. If they label it as a assault weapon or a military style assault weapon then all they have to do is set back and let peoples minds conjure up all sorts of evil and associate it with weapons of war. Every time somebody calls it an assault weapon especially a gun owner you play right in to perpetuating the lie and deception. Call them out and make them answer

    • JD August 24, 2018, 10:36 pm

      1) a van or other large vehicle used in an attempt to run down and injure or kill as many people as possible.
      2) a common, easily accessible object used to inflict injury (for example: hammer, knife, screwdriver, bat, rock, tire iron, 9-iron, iron rebar)

I also would approve of his candidacy. Montana: bottom of the list in terms of electoral votes (if he could even win MT in a general election) and he probably doesn’t have enough time to make a full push for socialism and fascism to be supported by half of the demonic-rat party.

  • Gourdhead August 24, 2018, 12:31 pm

Bullock can kiss his buttocks goodbye in regards to any national considerations.

  • JR August 24, 2018, 12:29 pm

Anyone with even a little understanding of different rifle platforms and ammunition options knows that the AR-15 chambered in its most popular .223 variant packs a pretty mild recoil compared to similarly-powerful long guns. It is not a machine gun as you need to pull the trigger for each shot just like most semi automatic rifles. It was first made by Armalite Rifle which is where the AR abbreviation came from…
That’s precisely why it is so popular among shooters using the rifle for everything from law enforcement to home defense to sport— it’s not particularly loud, scary or difficult to shoot. It is not a military weapon and is a higher powered 22 rifle.
We don’t need a new gun ban. We need a ban on the political correctness dulling our collective ability to better recognize the people not worthy of society’s trust. And we need to do away with gun free zones. Any chance at all that a concealed carrier may have the opportunity to dispatch one of these bastards to hell before he racks up a high innocent body count sounds more sensible to me than does thinking that murderers obey gun laws. See something, Say something!
It’s liberal ignorance and stupidity that’s bringing on all this bloodshed, not AR-15s. As often happens in the aftermath of highly publicized shooting incidents, blame has already been placed on the lack of “common-sense gun control.” But, once again, this blame is misplaced—had already-existing laws been properly followed and enforced, this individual would not have had access to a firearm.

  • JR August 24, 2018, 12:27 pm

Gun control is a dangerous definition, it is not hope. Hope would be a presidential admin. that had a justice dept, that prosecutes gangs, drug cartels and other murderers that misuse weapons. Hope is not putting restraints on the law abiding citizens trying to buy items to protect themselves and their families. The problem with these extreme gun control idiots is that they make restrictive laws on those who are law abiding citizens who seek protection for themselves and families. Part of being tolerant is recognizing that not everyone who chooses to protest is doing it for the right reason, just as, everyone who chooses to own a gun, isn’t doing it for the wrong reason. I just wish those who choose to protest were just as quick to choose to stand to honor American heroes who gave their lives and fought for freedom. The 2nd Amendment sets the Standard with the words “to keep and bear arms” which includes no words of limitation. They do not describe a right that is subject to reasonable regulation. The 2nd Amendment could have stated bear arms openly, or keep arms within the home, but it did not. Absent any such limitation, keep and bear must be given their broadest ordinary meaning. At the time of founding as now, to bear meant to carry, defining carrying as wear, bear, or carry upon the person or in the clothing or in a pocket for the purpose of being armed and ready for offensive or defensive action in a case of conflict with another person, without regard to place. The bottom line is that people are alive today because of the foresight of our founding fathers, who realized that self-defense is one of the most important natural rights bestowed on people and that restrictions on that right are not only dangerous, but stupid.

  • BOhio August 24, 2018, 9:36 am

The 2nd Amendment is about the citizenry protecting themselves from an over-reaching, all-powerful, corrupt government. Which is why the citizenry must not allow their right to own firearms –as they choose– to be infringed. The government would love to sweep into your neighborhood knowing you have a single-shot rifle locked up in your gun safe — per government mandate. Remember what the Nazis did in Poland, and elsewhere. Eliminated the citizenry’s effectiveness in fighting back.

The government is not your friend. And liberalism is a mental disorder.

    Molon labe.

  • MB August 24, 2018, 9:24 am

Humans find ways to kill, been going on since Cain murdered Abel. Rock or a Glock, no matter, if the will to kill is there, the tool is inconsequential. A Pickup truck is a much more efficient weapon than a gun. Based on Governor Bullock’s logic, Montana needs to ban rocks, good luck with that.

So, Montanans – as well, the rest of us – are only suitable for 19th century firearms long gun designs, eventually to be kept locked up in central storage. A direction Canada is now headed.

  • Khiem August 24, 2018, 6:38 am

Really hard to believe that Montana has elected a Socialist, 20 years ago nobody would have thought that possible, but alas, it must be because of all the Californians who have moved there in recent years! My state of Arizona is booming now with new construction, much of it beyond the budgets of hard working Arizonans, many of the homes are being purchased by Californians, Oregonians and Washingtonians who sold their home for $500,000 or more and moved to Arizona where they can pay cash and have enough left to buy a Rental House!

  • Mark August 24, 2018, 5:38 am

  • C.Aldridge August 24, 2018, 3:38 am

He’s a DUMBocRAT, why would anyone expect anything but a flip-flop? They say whatever they think will get them elected. It doesn’t matter if they believe it or not, it’s just the convenient thing to say at the time. you can almost guarantee that if they get elected, they will be for more government control, higher taxes, and more spending on things to keep people dependent on the government.

  • Karl August 24, 2018, 3:15 am

This person may have gotten elected ONCE, with talk like this it sure won’t ever happen again! I spend a fair bit of time in that beautiful state and in the ranching and working man’s realm there is a larger percent of pickups that all have an AR in the front seat. Oh and it’s a mighty rare occurrence that one is ever missused!

  • Steve G August 22, 2018, 12:20 pm

I’ve never understood why the fine residents of the great state of Montana would put up with ANY infringement of their second amendment rights. This has always baffled me. Of all of the states I’ve wandered through, Montanans have been the most sensible, down to earth, real people I’ve met. They don’t suffer fools well and they aren’t fooled often. Why they would put up with a huckster like this flip flopping fish is beyond me. Bump stocks….really? Changing his tune on guns to suit another audience to seek higher office is just him lying. I always had the impression from Montanans that they would call out liars and cheats and run them out of town. Maybe I read Montanans incorrectly? I sure hope not.

It does not matter what Bullock thinks about assualt rifles – he has no chance of getting nominated. His campaign will be, “I’m a white male. I can win the general.” But, the Democrat base is far left. The candidate has to be minority or female. The Dems will turn out based on enthusiasm. The Trumpers will turn out based on fear of the Dems. Fear tops enthusiasm. Trump wins.
