The Rex Alpha is a competition-ready all-steel handgun with a factory-tuned trigger. It’s a double-action/single-action pistol with ambidextrous manual thumb safeties. Unlike the bulk of SIG pistols, these guns don’t have decockers to ensure a smoother trigger pull in single- and double-action.

The Rex Alpha is the full-sized variant of the Rex Zero. The Zero is a semi-compact gun chambered for 9mm Luger with an alloy frame and a 17+1-round capacity with flush mags. Twenty-round extended magazines are also available. Both feed from the same pattern mags, but while the Zero is meant for everyday carry, the Alpha is definitely more game-centric.

The Alpha has oversized ambidextrous safety levers along with an enlarged magazine release button and a flared magazine well. The Rex Alpha also features a fiber optic front sight and a fully adjustable rear target sight. The rear sight is click-adjustable for windage and elevation.

It also has a thin curved trigger and a skeletonized hammer. Additionally, the Alpha has a lightened slide and narrowed grip. The lighter slide reduces felt recoil and speeds cycling while the narrow grip ensures that any user can get a positive grip. There is nothing here to get in the way of the shooter.

The Rex Alpha Competition Pistol is Just Around the CornerOther competition-friendly features include a generous beavertail on the backstrap and a lengthened slide and barrel assembly. The barrel measures in at 5 inches long and the sight radius is nearly 8 inches long. It’s just a hair over 6 inches tall and measures in at 1.6 inches wide at the controls.

The Rex Alpha has a full-length rail on the frame, making this gun just as capable for home defense as it is for running and gunning. Whether you’re looking for something new and different or just one gun for all things, the Alpha has a lot going here.

In the past couple of years the Rex series of handguns has earned high marks as a SIG alternative. These guns are made for service and duty in addition to competition. Along with the tuned trigger, the Rex Alpha has an aggressively checkered front strap and diamond plate grips.

Both the slide assembly and frame sport a nitrocarburized finish with a deep graphite coloring. Because the frame is steel the pistol weighs in at a perfectly competition-friendly 39 ounces. It also greatly extends the gun’s service life.

The Alpha has a$1,099 MSRP and is already listing in the $900 range. With all-steel guns like these becoming less and less common, availability will be limited even at these prices.

The presence or absence of the Sig’s decocker mechanism has absolutely nothing to do with the feel of the trigger pull in either single or double action.
