The XD-S from Springfield Armory is a pocketable 6 shot 45ACP and an 8 shot 9mm, both with the same external dimensions. The scuffed up and dusty on the bottom has been my personal concealed carry gun since my review of this actual gun in June of 2012. I trust my life to the XD-S, so this recall did not come lightly. The top gun is the .45ACP XD-S with the upgrade. I shot it better than my gun.

The only outward difference in the upgraded guns is that roll pin you see in the grip safety of the upgraded gun. There also three parts inside that have been upgraded to new specs. The new parts and design are not intermediate “fixes.” They are permanent changes to the engineering of the XD-S, and the new guns will not be different from the upgraded guns.

I carry Hornady Critical Defense in my XD-S. This is the 185 grain FTX bullet in .45ACP. At 10 yards, rested, the left group of my original carry gun is quite good for an out of the box pocket pistol. On the upgraded XD-S, right, three of the six shots went into the same ragged hole exactly to point of aim. This was the same disparity with 230 grain Speer Lawman roundball, though the Hornady groups were of course overall much smaller. Same barrel, same grip, same feel. What makes the gun shoot better? The upgrade!

It was a huge surprise when this past Labor day weekend we started to hear that Springfield Armory had announced a recall on their XD-S series of concealed carry pistols If you are not familiar with the XD-S, it is a small, but not tiny, 45acp six shot, and this year Springfield brought out a 9mm eight shot, with the same external dimensions. The magic of the XD-S is ergonomics. The .45 shoots like a 9mm of any other brand, and the 9mm shoots like a .380 of any other brand. Springfield has never had a recall on any of their guns, so nobody knew what to expect. This article is something of an update, with the latest news, and we got to shoot a couple of the modified XD-S’s this weekend. An overview and review follow.

This past Friday, October 18th, Springfield started shipping back the upgraded guns from the folks who had sent them in starting that first week in September, when we first sent out our notification. The guns will be upgraded in the order that they were received. Denny Reese, the Co-CEO of Springfield explained what’s going on with the upgrade process in an interview on Friday.

“We really feel for our customers who have sent in their guns and have been patiently, waiting for their return. We are doing our best to not only get the guns back quickly, but also to make sure that your XD-S is the same great reliable gun that it always has been. We genuinely thank everyone who sent them right in, and we will be working around the clock, literally three shifts, to get them back to you. By next week we should be able to update everyone through the SpringfieldRecall.com website as to what the average turn around time will be in the future.”

I have personally carried the XD-S .45ACP from our first article on the gun since back in June of 2012. You will see my holster worn gun in the pictures. For me, as an XD-S devotee, I have to ask the question, “why should I send the gun in when there is nothing wrong it from what I can tell?” From my initial tests, this modification to the gun is an actual upgrade. I shot it better. Plus, though I personally have not had any problems with my gun, Springfield would not have gone through all of this difficulty for themselves if there wasn’t a genuine safety concern.

“We want everyone to send their guns in,” explains Denny. “The guns will truly come back to our customers better than they left. The biggest concern we have heard from people is they are worried that we are going to install a ‘bandaid fix.” The new parts are a true upgrade, and new design is extremely simple. Yes, from a safety perspective, we have erred on the side of caution in announcing a recall. However the safety of our customers is everything to us here at Springfield Armory, and this upgrade makes the XD-S a better gun, and a safer a gun. The trigger pull is slightly smoother, slightly heavier, and everyone who has tested the upgraded gun says that they shoot the XD-S better with the upgrade, and that it is more accurate as a result. ”


Visually the “upgrade” to the XD-S amounts to a roll pin in the grip safety. Inside the pistol there are 3 other upgraded parts, the sear, the sear spring, and the disconnector. On field stripping, nothing is different at all. I am personally not a tinkerer, so I will most likely never take apart the insides to see what they actually did that is different in the guts of the gun. My XD-S is the only gun I carry now. It is the only semi-auto that I have ever carried that always fires the whole magazine regardless of how long it has been since I cleaned out the lint from my pocket. I was as concerned about sending in my gun for the upgrade as everyone else. But now that I have seen the changes and felt the changes I will be sending my guns in immediately (I bought the 9mm from our review as well but don’t carry it).

As to Denny’s claim that the XD-S shoots better, I agree. The groups you see here in the pictures were the best examples I took from over 200 rounds in each gun. Most of my shooting was with range rounds, mostly milsurp and Speer Lawman. Both my rested and offhand groups were smaller with the upgraded guns. They weren’t drastically different, especially offhand, but as a whole the upgraded groups were smaller, with much fewer flier shots. The targets I picked for the pictures were shot with Hornady Critical Defense, which has always been my best performer in the XD-S.

When you get your gun back, don’t be surprised if you don’t feel that the trigger pull is heavier than when the gun left, even though it technically will be. I had to put my digital trigger gauge on the upgraded guns, because side by side I felt that the difference wasn’t something you would notice. The gauge measured slightly over ½ a pound difference. So far I have blind tested five people to dry fire both the orignal and upgraded guns, and none so far have been able to tell any difference in the pull.

As a side note, because so many discussion board “experts” skip over this. a heavier trigger pull isn’t the worst thing when talking about striker fired guns. Everyone’s biggest complaint on striker guns is that the trigger is too light, when compared to a double action/single action semi-automatic or a double action revolver. Some worry that a light trigger results in accidental discharges, though in practice they are infrequent. The XD-S upgrade only adds about a ½ a pound of trigger pull to the gun, and I think the trigger is a little smoother. The upgrade also does not effect the reset length, which is just over 1/10th of an inch on the XD-S. Side by side, besides the trigger pull, the only physical difference I could ascertain was that the grip safety seems to allow the trigger to fire a little bit earlier.

If you were planning to buy an XD-S in the near term, you will be able to tell if the gun is upgraded by the added roll pin in the grip safety. Springfield has notified their dealers of the details of the recall. This upgrade is not an intermediate fix just for existing guns. The exact changes and parts are going to become a permanent part of the XD-S engineering and production, so there will be no difference in upgraded guns and new guns going forward. For now the efforts at Springfield will be to get the customer guns upgraded of course, and that work will be done at the Springfield plant in Geneseo, Illinois. New XD-S pistols will then be coming back to dealer’s shelves.

I live in Miami. Concealed carry isn’t a joke here. Our evening news has really bad stuff in it almost every night. My XD-S is the only gun I keep loaded and with me at all times. I stake my life and my families lives on that little gun, so this recall was a big shock. I’m sure it was for a lot of other people out there too, because all of us XD-S owners love them so much. If you ask me what has made the XD-S such an over the top successful gun it is that when you shoot it, and you see how well you shoot it, a certain confidence settles into your perceived ability to protect yourself. Springfield Armory has my confidence that the upgrade will make my XD-S safer, and that the upgrade will bring the same never fail reliability to my XD-S that it has always known. I have shot the upgrade guns, and I shoot them better. For now I have decided not to share my opinion of why I think we are all reporting that we shoot them better. It will be interesting to see whether people come up with the same explanation I have, or if it is more of a feel thing that everyone explains their own way. Suffice it to say that this little bump in the road for the sake of safety is not going to derail the XD-S as the leader of the pack in concealed carry. If you can get beg, borrow or rent one, try an XD-S for yourself. Unless you want something really tiny and that is all that will do, there is no better concealed carry pistol on the market.

    I had no problems with my XDs .45 or the recall. I got it back in a few months with a better trigger than it left with and a couple a free extended cap. mags thrown in to boot. It does shoot better now and my groups are tighter. I carried a model 27 Glock before the XDs but like the Springfield better simply because it feels better and shoots better. But that’s all old news because I picked up a S&W M&P Performance Center Shield .40 that makes them both seem prehistoric. I’m not going to gush about it but I will say that I sold the XDs, the 27 and I bought 2 more of those PC M&Ps. Custom Ported pistol with trigger job for under 350 after rebate? Sold!

    If you depend on the XDS 45 you are in trouble. I had one for some time, carried in a dry holster and never been fired. I fired it once and the slide locked back and you could not move it foreword or backward. I took it buy my gun shop and they said I needed to send it back to Springfield armory. I sent it back and they told me it rusted off some of the coating and would cost 85.00 to repair. I told them to keep it because I could not have any faith in it.

    I just bought a brand new xds 45 last week and I traded another gun I had for another xds 45 but the one I traded for has not been fixed from the recall. Am I able to have it fixed since I’m not the original buyer of it?

    I am sending mine in this week. I actually did experience a “double shot” on several occasions. I thought it was me and not the gun. I am glad to see this get fixed.

    I never sent my XDS in because I knew better then to ever buy one with all the new gun issues. I relied upon all of you beta testers to help them get it right before I bought one, still have not bought one. Maybe next year. Right after they first started shipping my LGS had one, a bitone and I held it and dry fired it and was in love and dang, they had it for a super good price too. But…. I knew better then to buy a brand new design right outa the box. I’m glad for all of you who did buy one and never had any issues. Mean time my Keltec PF9 is working perfect, so is my .40 glock but I am looking forward to owning that bitone XDS some time next yr maybe if I walk in to the LGS [in 2015, nxt yr] and they got another bitone XDS for a good price, bingo, I’ll pop for it after knowing how many revisions they went through and knowing ahead of time this was all going to happen, I’m glad I waited. I am a CNC machinist and I know how to get a part made perfect, but I make parts for space craft not guns. Gun parts have to be made fast and cheap so little time can be devoted to make each part exactly right. These parts have to be made in huge lots and they all have to be exactly right but even then, the entire gun has to be exactly right and this takes time and many hundreds of thousands of guns in customer hands.

    The XDS will soon be ready, and so will I. I will replace my trusty Keltec PF9 with the XDS after all this recall bullshit is over and the final revision of the XDS ships.

    Mr. Admin,
    I agree with you that SA is doing a good job of getting pistols fixed given the circumstances. What you don’t mention is that we, those who purchased in good faith, now have a gun that we can’t rely on. There will always be that lingering doubt. We paid good money for something that now, even after it is repaired, will always be in doubt. I am sending in mine today, but when I receive it I have two choices: shoot it for fun only, or leave it in the safe. It has ceased being a viable defense option. Selling it is a dream because who wants to sell an unreliable gun to another person? Springfield should give us the option of trading in this gun for something that works or return our money!

    I sent my XD-S .45 in early September after getting my FedEx shipping label within an hour of my e-mail to them. It went in the next day after I dropped it off at my local FedEx/Kinko’s here in Lafayette La. Lafayette is not exactly a sprawling metropolis but the guy at FedEx asked me what was going on because he was up to 23 returns to Springfield from his location alone. That right there told me that the pistol was popular indeed. I read the weekly updates and waited patiently as I didn’t have any reason to not believe what Springfield was telling me. I own about a dozen pistols and also have a Springfield EMP .40 that was my previous CC weapon so I went back to it while my XD-S was away. I got my pistol back a little less than 2 weeks before Thanksgiving and have been completely satisfied with it. I like the new trigger and although I didn’t get to shoot but 50 rounds in the gun before I sent it back I do believe it’s improved. I also got a 7 round extended mag back with my pistol. I’ve seen crybabies here say that they sent their XD-S in before some of their friends did but their friends got theirs back already and they haven’t. There was even 1 guy here that said he got a 5 round magazine instead of a 7 round. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of Springfield’s newly hired people that were there specifically to help with the recall might have pushed some whinny assholes pistol’s back in line if these despots had made a habit of being a nuisance via phone or e-mail and their names were known. Maybe even got a 5 round mag instead of a 7 just for being a unreasonable asshole that called every other day asking the same questions. Impatient pricks. Who could blame them? These dumb asses have already gone on record as saying they will never buy another Springfield firearm again and will sell their’s the second they get them back. There even is one guy here claiming to be a gun store owner who said he’s pulled everything Springfield from his store and will never sell them again. If that’s true it’s his loss and Springfield is better off without him and these type of customers. It’s their loss. There will be new Springfield devotees as time passes and eventually any lost customers will be replaced. There were even a couple of guys that said they replaced their XD-S with a Kahr and a few that said they have been unarmed the entire time Springfield has had their XD-S because it was their only gun. Come on man! If that was true go buy another firearm because you should have more than one anyway and if you think your Kahr was a good replacement that’s your opinion but IMO no way. Now that’s one gun I wouldn’t own. I understand they have their fans and their place in the market but they started out as a cheap firearm company somewhere along the lines of High-Point and that’s how I still think of them. I wouldn’t bet my life on them. I know a few people that own them and after shooting them and looking closer my opinion of them hasn’t changed that much.

    I have not sent my XDS 45 in yet, I was told the gun that went full auto was Modified by the owner. I also believe the roll pin in the grip safety is going to work its way out and the gun will not fire. If that pin works out it will stop the grip safety, I will not longer trust this gun with My life. now I must fined someone that will buy it from Me and sell at 60 cents on the dollar. I must go to the eastside of Detroit were there are a few houses and pack Dogs and less not forget the crack heads, I have had to use a gun more than once so I need one that I am sure will work sorry to say the XDs I no longer will trust after the roll pin is put in. I am very unhappy.

    First, I am not a professional writer, so apologies in advance for my grammar and punctuation errors.
    I am currently waiting for my XDS 45 to be returned. I bought it, then found out about the recall before ever getting to put any rounds through it at a range. I *did* however run several magazines of FMJ and hollow point rounds thru it as a function check. I wonder how many others may do the same thing with their weapons? Just loading the firearm for use or carry created a potential danger according to the info I have seen. This alone makes me respect and appreciate SA for issuing a recall due to the remote chance of an unintentional discharge. My opinion, based on my thirty five odd years owning and using many different brands of firearms, along with my experience of ten years in the Marines in combat arms requiring me to make quick decisions that directly effected the life and safety of others is this:
    Any newly designed mechanical device, especially as intricate as a firearm, can experience unforeseen design problems. I think people forget that many gun manufactures avoid these issues because they are cloning previous proven mechanisms. Innovation has it’s rewards, as well as it’s pitfalls. SA broke new ground with this pistol, (it has differances from the other XD lines), and while I am not in the know as a SA engineer, I would suspect there was a significant amount of testing prior to product release. After release it was then discovered that under the right conditions a danger was present. This has occurred with many different firearms, not just SA. I personally have had to send several weapons back to the factory for repair; Other type S.A., Rugers, Colts, Detonics, ParaOrdanance, Winchesters to name a few. ( I shoot a lot, thus experience more failures than some may see.)
    SA gets kudos from me for not waiting till someone’s life was destroyed due to an accidental discharge. Who cares if you could later prove it was SA “fault” that you shot and crippled or killed someone you loved, that would not bring them back. Some say SA was only covering their butt, I say they were acting as responsible gun community citizens. They did what they could as fast as possible to reduce the potential risk as much as possible, and put people’s safety ahead of a corporate black eye.
    As a NCO in the Marines, while on patrol or even in a firefight I have had to stop my men in their tracks to prevent injury and save lives. I did not know exactly the 100% correct course of action! just that they had to stop what they were doing. I feel this was SA position. A command decision to stop was issued, once people’s safety was secured as much as possible then the safest course of action could be worked out. Did SA deliberately lie to folks and promise a quick return just to lie? I doubt that. SA is a big company, and the “mouths” of PR are depending on others for details and potential schedules. Isn’t it likely the designers were a tad over confident and assumed a quick fix, but the reality was it took longer to truly correct the issue? This was their first recall, they had no real pre-established map to go by. No news in the beginning was bad, but wouldn’t a poorly designed bandaid and a second recall to fix the fix be worse? I used to teach my young NCO’s that a “OK” decision made in a timely manner beats “the best” decision made too late. I think SA did an OK job in a timely manner, and then improved towards the best decision they could make. Monday-morning quarterbacks are always the stars, real time in the trench you do the best you can.
    Now SA has the fix (not a band aid as all current production pistols incorporate the same parts), and has done due dilligance in stopping anyone from trying to re-create the defect (come on, we all know the guy who HAS to prove it isn’t true only to get hurt then cry foul) and is, within fiscal reason, correcting the issue as quickly as possible. The management and PR freely admit to not handling this as well as some wished at first, have taken steps to correct and improve communication. They also are sending out an additional magazine with the repaired pistols, which is a standard part everyone can potentially use vs. a holster or clothing that is a personal fit thing.
    Very rarely will anything be perfect at the start, it may be good, but can always be improved. I feel that how the improvement process is handled says a lot about the caliber of the company; SA may have stumbled, but appears to have quickly gotten back to speed, is trying to do right by their customers while maintaining a viable business that has the ability to control quality issues now and in the future.
    Will I purchase other SA products? Yes. Will I buy other brands products? Yes. I accept what I can’t change, and try to make the best of what I have to deal with, that said I am looking forward to getting my safer XDS back soon so it can be put into rotation as a tool to safe guard my family, as it should.

    I received my XDs back a week before Christmas. I went out to test fire it and had a problem. I had the slide closed and inserted an extended magazine with 5 rounds in it. I pulled the slide back to strip a round from the magazine and load the pistol. The slide would not go back far enough to catch a round, in fact it would not go back far enough to lock the slide. I removed the magazine and locked the slide open without a problem. I again closed the slide and tried the above procedure several times with the same problem of the slide not retracting far enough. I then inserted the magazine into the pistol with the slide locked open. Releasing the slide fed a round perfectly. I fired the five shots without incident. Then I closed the slide and inserted a loaded magazine (same one). I pulled back the slide and released, and all worked perfectly. I could not reproduce the problem of the slide catching on something and not being able to load the pistol in that manner. I haven’t shot the gun since that day. I do not feel confident that this problem will not occur again some day, and I will not fell confident until I know why this happened.

    Just got my XD S back today,all is good. I found out about the recall in guns and ammo magazine. I sent my gun back and about a month later i got my letter for the recall. Springfield could act like Remington and say nothing.
    I think Springfield did a great job.My gun was gone for about 3 months.So quite complaining , you will get a safe gun when all is said and done.

    I shipped mine on Sept. !6th and just got it back on Dec. 30th. I understand Springfield’s concern for safety, but my main gripe is why wasn’t it thoroughly tested before it hit the stores? I would expect a problem like this from a lesser gun company, not them! Yes, we did have “communications” problems: like telling us it would be a 30 day turnaround; telling us there were further problems with the upgrade; telling us that the parts needed to upgrade weren’t in yet because of the Government shutdown. I planned to buy an XDM .45, but after this fiasco, I don’t trust Springfield. One final note…they said they were shipping a free 7 round magazine as a “thank you for your patience” gift. Nice gesture, but they sent me a 5 rounder. Oh well, it was free. ~I have already told friends NOT to buy from Springfield Armory~

    Got mine back…..Trigger sucks! I was no fan of the fact the original trigger mimicked a glock over my other xd’s but I shot it well for it’s 4.5-5.5 pound pull. New trigger is in no way a simple 1/2 pound difference, mine is more like 2 pound increase and I might as well use an HK VP70 the fact the gun has a short grip frame and has a 7-8 pound pull is gonna have me shooting low and inconsistently….time to email Denny Reese!

    Goog luck with your xds pistols, if their on the recall list you should probably think about getting another pistol, or a big bag of rocks! They have had mine since sept 1. I finally picked up a used glk 27. To fill my needs. It wouldn’t be so bad that they had to recall some pistols, it’s the fact that they have lied about it since day one. Now their excuse is that they can’t import the parts, my ass!. They still import the pistols. I’ll tell you the hold up. The guns on the recall list have been paid for. Your gun isn’t quite as important as the one their trying to sell. Springfield used to have some quality control. Wonder were it went. We used to call it stealing, when someone took somthing, promised to fix it, then kept it indefinitely. They used to hang horse theirs. Springfield is no better. You’d think they work for Obama .

    So I owned my .45 XDS for about 3 months before I heard about the recall. I sent them my gun on September 19th and still do not have it back. I just got off the phone with them and they said they’re hoping to have it to me by December 31st. To me, that’s ridiculous. I understand they have a lot of guns to fix and a government shutdown took place within that time as well but still. They shouldn’t have requested the guns be sent to them without having an idea of the problem and how to fix it. I mean they practically “owned” it longer than me already.

    I asked if I didn’t have it back before next year if I could just receive a new gun and they said that’s not an option. I loved my XDS while I had it and miss having it to carry big time but to me, about 3 month to fix a recall is a joke. I hope not too many other people are having such a pain with this as well.

    I’m amazed at the level of vitriol directed at SA over this recall. I’ve been a firearms owner and user for roughly 60 years and have been involved in a number of recalls. None were handled as forthrightly as this one. Some even required the manufacturer to get sued before taking action. I bought my XDs .45 and took it immediately to the range. A quick cleaning and oiling then ran through 100 rounds (50 JHP, 50 FMJ). No problems. Went home and cleaned it and got on the computer to register the warranty. The next morning I had an email from SA regarding the recall and a link to a FedEx label. Packed it up and sent it in. They got it September 8th. If I needed updates, they had answers on their website. A while into the process they gave weekly updates. I received my pistol back November 20th. At first blush that seems like a long time but knowing how much work is involved in failure analysis, reengineering and testing it actually quite quick. This process has improved my respect for a company that already makes several of my favorite firearms. I will buy more SA products.

    I just received my xd-s 45 2 days ago. Sent in Sept 1 or 2. When I dried fired my pistol I felt and noticed a big difference in the trigger, and that is when dried fired the trigger remained in the rear position. That was not the norm before the upgrade and is not the norm on my other XD pistols. Therefore not sure I want to take it to the range. I have a call into Springfield and will call again tomorrow Monday 11/18. Does any one else have the same going on??

      Springfield emailed me twice and called. As per Springfield upgrade seems to have been the trigger not resetting, unless you rack the slide. Took to the range and fired a box of 50 rounds. When I questioned them about the trigger on my XD 45 standard and the XD 9 mm sub-compact.

    I currently own 4 springfield armory firearms, which includes my XDs 45. From this experience, I can promise you that there won’t be a fifth any time soon. If and when Springfield armory ever sends my XDs back, I’m trading it in for something else, along with the extra magazines, King tuck holster and any other springfield firearm. I’ve already replaced it with a Kahr, and just the name now pisses me off.

    Sent in on 8/29/13. Returned to me on 11/11/13…Veterans Day! Fed-Ex delivered on a holiday!!! Springfield payed extra for that, no doubt. Came in a cute little plastic box with a bonus 7-round magazine. Fired it, finally on the 15th and it functioned just fine. Trigger felt noticably heavier, but let off was sharp reset was short and accuracy was not degraded. I was concerned after initial re-call notice indicated that firearm would be returned in “factory” condition with any add-ons removed and returned. I had installed nite-sights and did not relish re-installing as it was challenging to do myself. Kudos to B&J Machine for selling a very effective “Universal Sight Tool, P-500” that helped a great deal. Also, to the customer service that I recieved from them when I called seeking HELP late one evening. The answers were spot on and made the install smooth.

    Over all the Springfield recall experiance was no problem and not even inconvenient… Oh maybe a little, but life is to short to sweat the small stuff. Yeah, everybody has an opinion on making it better, faster, smoother, but….
    Opinions are like rectal cavities, most everybody has one, they’re mostly different and some are louder than others. However, try to remember that most people don’t want to hear yours and very few care to see it, even if it’s just in print! We all want to have heros, but, lately it seems that there are those folks out there, who can hardly wait for their hero to make a mistake so thay can crucify them publicly and anonomously, via on-line hate mail.     I find the entire fiasco unacceptable. I own several Springfields. I purchase the XDS in 2012. When I got back from an extended trip, I found the recall and sent the pistol back. Now it will be 2014 before I see it again.
    Springfield should replace the pistols with new manufacture or refund all costs of the pistol (price, registration and taxes) so we can purchase a working pistol. In this time of anti-gun sentiment, it is absolutely unbelievable that an old established American company would manufacture off shore and then treat its customers as trash.

    What a whitewash! How does a new design like the xds not get tested to the hilt before it’s sold to the public? Seems like the design was rushed to market without adequate testing. Also, the company reps lied and told me over the phone in early September that they had a fix and would be returning the recalls in 6 weeks, when in fact we now know that at that time, they hadn’t a clue how to fix the issue. When I learned that they had been untruthful, I contacted the company and requested a refund of my purchase price; the company responded by emailing me a silly reply with a lot of blah, blah, blah. Lastly,it has always struck me as poor manners for Springfield to require that their products be returned to them for repairs. Why are they afraid to match Glock’s policy of allowing aftermarket parts and armorers to work on their product? Sorry but this has left a bad taste in my mouth, and it is unlikely that I will purchase their products in the future. By the way, I sent my xds in on September 2, 2013, and as of November 14, I am still waiting for its’ return.

      Sure they could just write down the instructions on a napkin and let any gunsmith do it. I’m not sure what part of the admittedly difficult process of getting the repairs going the whiners don’t understand.

    I could understand the expenditure for buying a weapon for whatever use, and then having it basically taken away. To make a point I will have to compare apples to oranges in saying they have been making automobiles for a 100 yrs. and still recall them for the simplest engineering design. The autos are fixed sent back usually better than before. I can’t condone the fact of the way the recall was handled. Like the company executive didn’t know how to do his job like the engineering dept. who made the design. These top people need a much needed evaluation and possibly Company Action to get their head screwed on a little tighter.
    I received my XD-s back but haven’t shot it when I bought it or when it was returned, but I have owned only one other Springfield Armory Firearm in the past with not one bit of a problem.

    Mr. Administrator, I am a big fan of Springfield Armory. I have several of their guns, and am very pleased. I agree that we have a good product, and feel good about them recalling our guns, and finding a solution. I’m not real happy that they started the recall without a solution. I feel they should have been forth right with us on this. But my guess is they were trying to avoid worse publicity with the double shots frequently happening, and someone getting hurt. I guess I don’t blame them for that. But the big issue with me is their communication now. They have the date of when they received every gun. They know approximately how many repairs they do a day. They even know the order that each guns was received. Why can’t they be more specific on when we will receive our guns back. A web site with all the guns numbers in order that they came in, and we shipped these numbers today, and your number is, etc…I think their communication is poor. I am sure once this is all over, we’ll all be fine, and we’ll make it through, but communication is very important, and it will bow well for the company if they improve on this.

    Hold on a sec, how does GA do a review of a gun no one has seen yet? My gun was received Sep. 9. Still have no gun yet. My dealer sent his in one day earlier, still no guns and info by e-mail. How did GA get their turd back before I did? The trigger pull is half a pound heavier, no change to barrel, slide, frame or any relationship between those components! And you say it shoots better? It’s a friggin miracle! They put magic in to fix the gun? Very disappointed in SA and GA.

    I too love this gun. That is until one day when I racked the slide and did not get the round out of the chamber. When the round re-chambered it fired hitting me in the side of the hand. I obviously goofed by having the side of my hand in front of the barrel, but hopefully when I get it back this does not happen again.

    I will not bad mouth any gun or it’s ability, because just about like anything else, most of it is simply a matter of opinion and individual likes and dislikes. Lots of problems are “operator error” as people are to “smart” and know way to much to read the operator’s manual and the biggest one is correct cleaning of the weapon. As far as info and backing there weapons Springfield is as good or better than the rest. So sell your gun if you don’t like it, that is your right to do. Just remember though, that Springfield recalled and warned you and is fixing your gun and paying all expenses and giving you a mag too-boot. I don’t understand the lying that every one says SA did. What they said was not to use the gun. So if they have it or you have it, what is the difference? IT is not usable! They said they had a FIX, they may have had 3 or 4 different fixes for it by now, they may all work, or had problems with an initial fix, who knows, but the last fix may be the best one, or not, we will never know, unless you trust them to treat you right, you will believe what you want anyway. Don’t believe all the crap you read on internet about it or anything else, cause if you did, you would not even own a gun cause Obama and his crowd think you can’t handle one, don’t need one, and that the cops are going to protect you. GOOD LUCK with that!!! I never owned a Glock that so many are so wild about and probably never will, as I don’t even like the feel of them let alone shoot them and that is my right, but I know of and have heard a lot about and a lot of bad mouthing about the Glocks and the frame problems, loading problems, triggers, springs and about every other kind of problem. There solution for the frame was to come up with a new and improved gun, next GEN 3 or 4 or whatever. What I never heard was that they fixed the bad ones or even commented on other problems. I know people who still have them. SA did not ask if I was the original owner, for sales receipts or anything, just send it in and get it fixed. I don’t know why these people who still have the bad Glocks would not have traded or got them fixed if they had been offered. In fact I have been shown stories where Glock denied the problems, maybe at first, I guess, I don’t know. I also know that retailer’s kept selling the bad ones at the time. I was told the owners were told to buy something else or a new and Improved one. I don’t know all that happened with the Glocks, and don’t really care. Just seems to me that all the whining about SA seems extreme, because all the other gun manufacturers, Glock included, have had there problems as well, pistols and rifles. AND a lot of them have dismissed the problems as operator error or choose to do nothing at all. The fact is I would rather have a manufacturer tell me there is a problem, rather than not tell me and get some one hurt or worse and it be on my shoulders, no matter who’s fault it is. 60 some odd days without a gun seems like nothing, especially when I have waited for parts for 6 months or more and that is even if they are available. But like I said, it is your choice, you believe what you want and you deal with it the way you feel you have to, just hope the next gun you buy is as good and the company backs it up any better, my personal opinion is I don’t see how that is going to be possible.

    Well I sent my xds 45 back about 2 months before the recall because of the poor accuracy, first round was always a low and left flier and the remainder 4 inches left and 4 inches low free hand, rested it is better but still low and left.

    before anyone goes on about it being my fault I can and have shot the centers out of all my targets with all my pistols period, but not the xds! They returned it with no accompanying letter only a target at 7 yards with an open group of around 5 inches!

    I returned the xds for its recall and immediately bought a Glock 30sf, straight out of the box this pistol shoots point of aim and puts each round exactly where I want it. Regardless of the upgrade there will be an xds for sale when it gets returned some time after Christmas The Glock 30 sf simply shoots the socks off of the xds period!

    It took 63 days for my XDS to be returned. Nothing different with the trigger. Gun was packed sloppy with only one hing secured, paperwork half way hanging out, bouncing around a larger box with no proper packing. But the gun and the magazine were ok- not a scratch. Lots of internal oil but that cleaned up fine. 4 days later I sold it. Nothing wrong with the gun or the way it shoots, the manufacturer left a bad taste in my mouth. Had Springfield Armory been one of the many vendors I deal with, they would have been gone just as quick. If you can’t deliver or speak truthfully then we can’t do business. Hopefully they learn something from this.

    I can not believe all the whining. As the administrator said, most of it has to be children who have no knowledge of guns or life. Have you ever been in an Automobile recall??? They are fiascos and they do them all the time. Any recall of any type that I have seen has been “you are at there mercy”… SA is handling it the best they can. Stay off the phones with them so they can fix my gun. I also love the people who say this is my first SA and my last. I heard the same in the auto world for 40 years of working on them. If you like a Chevy, do not buy a Ford and whine about it. If you have Glocks and you love them so much, why did you buy a SA??? And what would you know of an SA if this is your first??? I have bought guns that the “Experts” called wonders and fantastic and took them home and they would not even function. You are not buying a custom gun, you are buying production. Is your new car perfect? Don’t make me laugh!!! And for the store owner, every company has made mistakes and every person, he who has not please stand up so I can tell you that you are lying!!! And if over one problem you are willing to stop selling SA, I have to ask what do you have in your store??? And do you think for a second that any of those manufacturers’ have never lied??? To you or about there products??? I hope you have never gotten in a situation where you got overwhelmed and could not come up with an immediate and correct solution instantaneously… I was in the military and I know they always do…(Laugh till I cry…) And to the rest of you, so if you have all these Glocks and other guns, why is SA fixing there gun correctly and covering there rear if you like, such a dramatic experience to you, as you should have many more that you love, in your closet till you get it back!!!! Just live with it like you do everything else in life. You will have less medical problems and be a lot happier person…..

    The administrator seems a little toucy and tired. You all way to worked up over BS. If you can only afford one plastic gun for ccwmaybe you ought to save. Second I carry am XDS. They good little guns. For ccw backup. Outside of all this BS on here its academic. Gun had a design flaw that could become a legal problem for SA. So what they fixing it. When you all decide to out your life and your teammates lives on the line you will recognize when we’ve gone to handgun shit has hit fan. Then I only see two by real world users. Glock and Sig. Least for us. Outside of all this thank Glock for creating the market by taking a chance on polymer framed guns a long time ago. Quit whining and move on.

    I bought my XDS on August 26 and learned about the recall on August 28…Never shot it before sending it to the factory. I got it back almost two months later (a couple of weeks ago) after a series of tantrums about the company’s bad communication and unfulfilled deadlines. I finally went to the range and fired 150 rounds with it. I will NEVER sell this gun! It feels very smooth and accurate…After Springfield addressed it’s miscommunication issues (and sent a 7 round mag as a form of apology), I understood they were an unexperienced company regarding recalls and forgot all about my anger. This little pistol shoots like a dream. This is obviously a very subjective perspective, but after owning a S&W .38, a H&R .32 and a Colt .357 magnum, I’m stuck with my Springfield .45 for good. I’ve never shot with such precision. Used 230s in my first trial. I’ll stick with those too. Perfect combo.

    The 45 ACP is one of my favorite guns. I have a half dozen or so of them and have been shooting the 1911 for over 50 years. When the XD came out quite a few of my friends got them and eventually so did I. I foolishly carried it for some time until I heard of the problems some friends were having. So I decided I had better put mine through is’s paces. I had the two magazines that came with the gun and an extra hi cap magazine. I loaded the magazines, inserted one in the gun racked the gun, took aim and the trigger went limp. I am not familiar with this mechanism so I had some fear it might randomly discharge. I removed the magazine and expelled the round. I reinserted the magazine ( less the first round) racked the action and it fired the remaining magazine flawlessly. I then tried the second magazine, thinking the first one was faulty. The result was the same, limp trigger on the first round, flawless on the remainder. Now I had some concern, since this is a carry gun, it must fire the first round, I could devise no way to determine if that would happen. I could of course carry the gun with one less round in each magazine, but that defeats the point. There was a problem with the gun. While my more mechanical friends remedied their problem I chose not to undertake this task. I called Springfield, at this time there had been no recall. I explained the problem and the danger I thought it presented. They were extremely polite and suggested I send in the gun for examination. I must say I have always held Springfield in the highest esteem. But this made me a bit shaky about the gun. Shortly after I sent it in they announced the recall. In not to long a time I got notice that my gun was being shipped. Unfortunately to an address where I could not sign for it. I called them and in the course of the conversation I enquired about the original problem that I had encountered. I was told that it was fixed, I asked what the problem was and was told that there was no problem except for my stupidity, that I didn’t know how to load a 45, and that was the problem, the only problem. If I didn’t know how to load a 45, how did I get it to work flawlessly with a magazine less one round/ and what about the other 45s I had shot for years?
    I was told time after time the only problem was my ineptitude, and not the gun. This leaves me to conclude that the gun, at least my gun, is not safe and should not be permitted to be out in the public. I have read quite a few web postings of similar experiences by others. In fact I saw a Utube movie of a guy opening his returned gun and with extreme displeasure proclaim it was no different than when he sent it in and it still had the same problems.
    I have always held Springfield in the highest regard, and their products are above reproach. Somebody goofed, they went overseas for a product that is not up to their standards. They should bring manufacturing State side and do a redesign. They should also give a DETAILED explanation of what was wrong and EXACTLY what they did in the repair. I cannot believe their attitude that I am to blame for the problem with the gun. Any questions I had about the safety of the gun were dispelled by their spokesman, I is unsafe. I read several reports where owners said they were encouraged to thoroughly lubricate their guns to get them to function correctly. This is a carry piece, that should not be necessary.
    It is my intention to take the gun to one of those buy back sites where they destroy the weapons surrendered, cut the gun in half and for the pres and TV proclaim it as unsafe.

    I heard of the recall almost as soon as it came out. Sent my XD S 45 in around Aug 29. I received it back Oct 30, so it was gone almost exactly two months. Springfield had started sending out update notices, so I was only in the dark regarding what was going on for about 4 weeks. As for the necessity of the recall, S*it happens. I received a free 7 round mag for my troubles. No big deal. Took it to the range and it shoots as nicely as it did before. Had I not read of the increase in the trigger pull weight, I would probably not have thought it any different than before. What I have never really had explained is what the changes were. The sear, disconnector and sear spring were changed, but in what way??? What does the little roll pin they added to the grip safety do?? Springfield is not the only company to make changes of internal parts. Glock is famous for it. Take one to a Glock GSSA match and more than once they have swapped out internal gizmos.

    I find that it is very easy to ba a Monday morning quarterback. Granted, there were some problems with the early on mmunications from Springfield, but I found that they were extremely responsible and prompt in getting a Fedex shipping ticket to me. My weapon was received there in a very short period of time, and since, I have been kept in the know with communication. I haven’t received my weapon back as of yet, but expect to shortly based on the schedule that they gave me. Like many others, I would much prefer for them err on the side of errant communictions early on vs nothing done to take care of a potential problem. I have been extremely well pleased with Springfield’s professionalism in this process. Would I rather they had a perfect plan with perfect communications or wade in and get the job done at tremendous expense? I’ll opt for the latter anytime. Kudos to them for great customer service! This was my first Springfield purchase, but it certainly won’t be my last!

    I purchased my first Springfield a little less than a year ago and turns out my first Springfield was a recall. First time and last time I purchase a Springfield firearm. Main reason is that since they received my pistol in late September i was informed I would not receive until Chirstmas and that was maybe……really? Wanted to purchase a few more over time, but no thank you. Selling this thing as soon as I get it back! Anyone have any recommendations?

    Received my XDS45 yesterday after waiting for 62 days…went out and fired it, cleaned it and am now waiting for a gun show where I can trade it. The work they did on the trigger pull in totally unsat. If they had left the trigger pull alone then I would keep the weapon, but no, they had to tinker with it. Looking at a Glock 36 for a carry weapon. This was my first Springfield and my last. I will catch the wrath of the Administrator but I must say, I can’t brag on anything from Springfield after this and sad to say, I’m not the only one.

    I read a bunch of fun periodicals, but only learned of the recall about three weeks ago from Guns America. I immediately called SA who emailed me a FedEx mailing label. After going to my third FedEx store, a nice employee generated my mailing label from my iPad and the pistols were on their way to SA. I hope they are in their hands by now.

    I sure do miss my .45 and 9mm XDs’s. I carried the .45 most of the time, and have had to resort to a Sig 9mm until I can get them back.

    A 2 month return time is unacceptable. An American company having their products made in Croatia to maximize profit is a joke. Keep taking American’s jobs from them, thank you Springfield. You are probably turning a brand new XDS pistol out every ten minutes, but can only do a trigger modification within 2 months, which is a joke. If I would have bought an Austrian made Glock, I wouldn’t be waiting this long, I’d be shooting! (At least Glocks are proud of where they are made) In short, Glock for life! I will be a bad advertisement for Springfield the rest of my life. Your product is a joke. By the time I get the pistol back you will have had it as long as I have had it and I bought the piece of junk. Enjoy it for me.

    Eight weeks and two days later, my XDs arrived home. The promised extra 7-round magazine was in the box, too.
    The trigger pull – which used to be nice and clean and light (guess that was the problem?) is now over nine pounds and gritty with lots of creep.
    Took it to the range yesterday. I used to easily shoot one ragged hole @ 10 yards. My best group now is a hair over 4” @ 7 yards.
    If I wanted a crappy, heavy, gritty trigger, I would have saved $300 and bought something cheap and crappy. . .
    It was NOT worth the wait

    Tricky to conceal on my frame but a joy at the range, the XDs9 quickly became my favorite carry. Prior to the recall, I had put maybe 600 rounds through it and noticed that every once in a while there would be a misfeed. It didn’t seem relative to a particular magazine or brand/type of cartridge. The misfeed always seemed to occur several magazines into the day.

    While I await the return of my XDs9, I’m carrying a Ruger LCP 380 – it’s easier to conceal but I’m not nearly as fond of it. Springfield’s handling of this recall is impressive. To fully appreciate Springfield’s approach to the recall, other readers can Google “Bryco 59 9mm” to see how another company handled a similar situation. SA’s early voluntary recall and weekly updates were/are wise moves. The extended mag as a thank you was an unexpected and classy touch. This was my first Springfield purchase; they definitely now have my attention.

    I sent mine in about a month back and have heard anything from Springfield on if they received it or not. The bad thing about all of this is that I bought this pistol for its concealment value. When I decided to go with a smaller frame pistol everyone I asked said go with the XD models. The reputation that Springfield has earned up until now was strong with everyone I talked to. I wanted a 45 ACP and the XDS was the one I went with. I only had the pistol for about four months and this happens. What else can you do at this point but wait? I read a post on here that really hit the nail. It said that Springfield owes their customers big time on how long it took to let us all know. The recall was out for over a month before I heard anything about it. I got the word from a friend of mine. Why do we fill out the product warranty service registration if they don’t email or mail anything to us? This is a legitimate question. I went to the website, call them and had my FedEx shipment form ready by the time I received an email and post mail notices. I will wait on this pistol and get it back eventually. Then I will carry and enjoy it when and if I ever get it back. The only way I will ever buy another item from Springfield Armory is if they start kissing my backside with free stuff and then it is still a huge maybe. Very ticked off over this.

    Got my XDS45 back on Friday 11-1. Took it to the range today. Before the upgrade? this little 45 was a tack driver. I put about 80 rounds through it and also had my son shoot it. At 20′ it now shoots about 5″ low. I could not hit a 6″ round metal target at maybe 25′? Let me know if anyone else has this large of a change.
    My son’s is do back in a couple of weeks, will see what his does.

    Look at it this way, if it was made by man it will have flaws. It’s an awesome gun just sit back and wait for it complaining won’t do no good. I like mine so I will wait, but I’m also looking into the xdm while I’m waiting for the xds return. Everything seems to have recalls today if you get bent out of shape over them that’s all you will get done doing.

    I sent in my XDS this week and was so disappointed to receive the update stating I can expect it to be returned after the holidays.
    Does Springfield offer any alternatives, such as a refund, or pay additional for a new pistol, or anything?

    I appreciate the work that Springfield is doing to resolve the problem, but it was a Springfield engineering problem and not the customer. So it seems that I am paying the cost for Springfield’s problem without any recourse. This will certainly come in to play the next time customers consider which brand to purchase. I cannot wait 2-3 months for a concealed carry weapon to be fixed and returned! I would have opted for an option to pay additional to purchase a new XDS that did not have the problem, assuming it is available today in retail.

    I have no problem with the recall and, in fact, appreciate SA’s dedication to safety. I do agree, however, that SA has handled this entire process very poorly. I’ve had very little communication from SA as to whether they’ve even received my gun much less the status of my gun. I sent it in Sept. 6th as soon as I was notified by my local FFL dealer and confirming it with SA that there indeed had been a recall. Between Sept. 6th to Oct. 6th, I received no updates from SA at all and had to call in (and be placed on hold for a very long time) to confirm that my gun had indeed made it to the factory and being process. Since Oct. 6th, there has been weekly updates in the form of generic mass emails, which is somewhat better. Again, I’m not so upset about the recall (and being without my gun for possibly up until after Christmas) as I am about the lack of communication. SA should’ve built into their website some sort of tracking capability to where customers track the status of our guns by entering in the RMA number rather than be left in limbo. That’s all I ask for, open communication. SA could learn a few lessons or two from Amazon and NewEgg.com about such things.

      I just now learned through this forum that by going to the “Getting Started” page and entering in the serial number it will give info. on the status of my XDS. See, SA never told me this. This is precisely the lack of communication I’m speaking about.

    I haven’t been able to make my XDS .45 do any of the things that are supposedly wrong with it; so I haven’t sent it back for the fix. Does anyone know if there will be a deadline for sending the gun back? I did get the RA and the FedEx shipping info, but since I never used it, my e-mail provider automatically deleted it after a certain period of time. Can I re-register and do it all over in order to send it in?

    This has become my every day carry, replacing my Taurus Millennium PT 745, which replaced my S&W Sigma .40 and my full sized XD .45 as every day carry due to their size and difficulty in concealing. I’d prefer to wait ’til SA has caught up with the backlog and then send mine so that the wait might possibly be shorter for it’s return.

    My biggest complaint is that they have not addressed the problem of light
    primer strikes that many have experienced. You can’t carry a gun that not
    Fire when you pull the trigger!!

      We have never seen light primer strikes on the guns, and thousands of people have commented here over the last year that they love the gun and have had no problems with it. If you are using steel case ammo with Russian primers, they are rifle primers used in pistol ammo and too hard for any striker guns. The same for a lot of the military surplus coming in from Romania. Commercial ammo never has a problem in the guns.

    As a FFL, store owner, 30 year firearms veteran, NRA Certified Trainer, and US military veteran, I will say I’m unequivocally done with Springfield. The administrator of this site can throw names around, beat his fists against his keyboard, or any other childish fit, but the fact of the matter is that he/she is completely glossing over the problem with SA’s handling of this entire issue. THEY LIED!!!! Plain and simple. They issued a recall for the guns, knowing they had no permanent fix, and once they had our weapons in their vaults, there they would stay until a fix was determined. They didn’t do this for safety, they did it to cover themselves. Instead, they could have acknowledged the defect, instructed people to maybe go so far as field stripping their weapons, and stored them away until a fix was determined. They didn’t, they took the lawyer approach of removing the weapons from the owner’s possession to limit liability, not for safety, that’s BS, plain and simple. If the Admin here is a shill for SA, then so be it, shill away, but the fact remains that SA lied, plain and simple. My store is now empty of Springfield guns completely. I will not be accepting any on trade, no matter the model, nor will I order any new firearms from this company. Our relationship is officially done, goodbye Springfield.

      What is the difference if they sit in their safe or your safe? If a recall is needed it is needed, and if you are foolish enough to think it was to protect themselves, that is really up to you and your skewed view of the gun industry. My comments aren’t for the sake of calling people names. Is it no longer ok to say something is stupid when it is stupid, and even, oh my, boneheaded? Your comments may make sense to you, but they don’t make sense I assure you. The point would be to get the guns back as soon as possible, whether you have decided what to do or not. If they had issued refunds and kept the guns you’d be whining that you wouldn’t have sent your back. You may not realize it, but there are mistakes in the world that aren’t really anyone’s fault. They just happen. You do your best. Your advice to tell people to field strip the guns is completely foolish. Don’t worry we won’t check up on you about abandoning SA, because you are probably doing it for the drama, not because you are actually that foolish.

        This comment will probably go unnoticed since it’s been so long since it the above was posted but here goes anyway. I think you should post the name of your store Scott. That way those of you that haven’t read any of the explanations as to why Springfield has done things the way they have and continue to come here to spew your opinions and insist that Springfield needed to answer your calls and e-mails individually to tell you the exact day and hour you will receive your gun (when they have clearly stated on their website why the can’t and won’t) and tell everybody they’re done with Springfield can come to your store and commiserate with your stupid ass and talk about their hate of Springfield while the rest of us that own several Springfield firearms, love them, understand what Springfield is up against with the recall and understand why they have not been able to answer individual e-mails and phone calls can avoid your shitty store like the plague. I’ve never seen such a bunch of whinny crybaby sanctimonious assholes in my life. In fact it’s hard to believe you’re gun guys much less a FFL and gun store owner. Even some of you that have served to which I say thank you for your service now go get treated for your PTSD.

    Sent my XDs off the first day after the recall notice was posted. Received my gun back the first week that repairs were underway. Trigger may be a little heavier, but it is smooth and for me, perfect for this type of gun. Once Springfield got their footing on this recall, they have done a class act with the communications and implementation.

    The “First come – first serve” principle is not working very well for Springfield. I love their guns, but there are dozens of reports of guns received at a later date being back in the hands of their owners, yet mine is still on their shelf. I went way out of my way to send it in the next day after the recall, and even though I am now in month 3 of waiting, I wasn’t upset about the recall… Until the reports started coming in about the later batch of guns being fixed and sent back, while mine is somewhere in the land of “There be dragons.”

    Waiting for my XDS 9mm to be sent back to me .The first thing I am going to do with it is to trade it in for Glock G26 9mm subcompact. I owned plenty of new guns before and never went threw a recall . I still been waiting for 2 months for my gun to been return but what is fun is that I got my recall letter last week. Will I buy another springfield gun NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven’t received my XDS back yet, and while it has been in for going on 2 months I have faith in the product and service.     Springfield Armory is doing everything right concerning the XDS recall. I love my XDS 45. Can’t wait to get it back. Mostly because concealing my Mossberg pistol grip 12 gauge down my pants is a little uncomfortable …..but the women seem to like it.

    It will be for sale , I have priced it to a guy I work with.He is interested but hasn’t given a definite answer.
    It’s the 45 version and comes with all the original accessories plus a Jackson Leatherworks IWB holster with 2 mag holders to match and (2) 7 round mags , a 3rd 7 rounder if SA sends one with the returned pistol.

    — Larry—– : I bet you traded in your XD-S for a Hi-Point, knowing that you were in the Air Force and had all that special air condition training you more and likely had a better chance at throwing your heavy ass gun at some one and killing them than aiming and firing a shot. That’s why you keep a XD-S. Oh and BTW, I’m pretty sure you survived Afghanistan and Iraq because your CO told you to “sit down and shut up”.

    I have a xds 45 and did not even get to shoot it, but have a xd 40 cal that shoot great.
    i have not shot a gun in 18 years since i was on the police dept. when i got my xd 40 and shot it for the first time i was in aw i love my spring fields its like i have not missed a beat this gun shoots dam well.( right out of the box)
    on the range years ago i shot 384 of 400 and shooting this gun the same after more than 18 years.
    i like my smith and wesson. But every ammo’s feed through this weapon it eats it like no other so when i get my xds back I’m sure it will feed the same,
    im glade no one has been hurt or injured and springfield has don a good job on the recall and to tell every one,
    just have patience. until i get mine back i will be caring my 40.

    Hi just wanted to let everyone know I sent my 9 and two 45’s off aug 30th I believe and got my 9 back today. Who hoo. Can’t wait to get to the range. The 45’s are scheduled for delivery tomorrow and Friday. Which mean I get to stay home and wait because adult signature required. Kinda bites they didn’t all ship together but it wasn’t clear when sending back that we could have sent them together instead if individually. Just wanted to let y’all know that if you go to Springfield’s recall site and click the get started tab and re-enter your serial # it will give you an update as to where your pistol is In the system ie: received, repaired or shipped. It updates every evening AND sometimes skips a step. Last night was showing my bi tone 45 as received and today it’s showing shipped. 🙂 I received email mon tues and today for each gun with tracking to let me know when to expect my guns. Btw fedex showed 8pm and he was here at 2 pm. Glad I stayed home. So for those of you that sent yours in sept 1st or 2nd you should get them this week. :)))) they came with the extra extended magazine and a small carry case. Bonus!

      Don”t count on receiving them that soon if you sent them Sept. 1st or 2nd. I sent mine in Aug. 29 and a friend sent his in two days later. Due to the labor day holiday, mine arrived Sep. 3rd in the morning and his arrived in the evening. He’s got one of his back and one on the way. Me…..the one who sent in first believing the “first come first served” promise….nothing yet! When I called and told them they were out of sequence I was told they don’t time stamp guns as they arrive. They put them on pallets and grab pallets by the day arrived. I don’t know if I even believe them on that! Mine could be the first one in and the last one out as far as I know.

    Just received my “upgraded” XDs .45. I am decidedly not pleased with the trigger. There is a TON of creep and no discernible break point . Creep, creep, creep, break. Not even close to the pre-upgrade trigger which broke cleanly with no creep.my first and last Springfield Springfield product!

    Hi, I just bought my XDS last week. Was told, by gun store that it was not on recall list. SA website says not on list, called and talked to SA she said, that they all have to go in (she never e-mailed the shipping label) will call again today. It is shooting low, about one foot at 10 yards, several different shooters. Would a bore sight tell me, enough, about if it is me or the gun, making it hit low? thanks

    Just want to comment on why I will never buy another Springfield. And I don’t care if the administrator tries to slam me for it either. Truth is truth, and I only respect the truth. I sent my gun in early on and called in after a week to see what was taking so long. I never saw any recall information, I was alerted by a friend, and called initially to see how to get my gun to Springfield. I was treated rudely by whomever answered the phone. As if I knew details about how many, how long, and etc. etc. etc. I asked to speak to a supervisor, and was lied to big time. That is where they lost my future business, and my respect. To tell me in no uncertain terms I should have my gun back within 2 weeks because they are doing “upgrades” to it when they didn’t even have a fix yet is pure and simple fraud. That was 7 weeks ago. You lied Springfield, now you are nothing but a lying dog in my book. I won’t be back to check and see that people that are sucking the Springfield tit have slammed me, so don’t bother. Or go ahead, I won’t see it. Just hoping I can warn some honest people that dealing with Springfield is the same as dealing with a crook. Bye.

      This is typical for a 16 year old. I’m sure you don’t even own a XD-s. You state you called one week after you sent it in, heck the shipping process probably took three days. How fast did you think they were going to figure out the issue, fix it, then ship it back? Two days or so would have been fine in your book right? Boy, you can’t even go to a local gunsmith in a busy city and get it turned around in less than two weeks, let alone I have personally sent my high end pieces half way across the country for work, and it has taken up to 6 weeks to get it back. So you are complaining about one week, for 100,000 guns? I think the only tit you need to go back to, is your mothers. And yes I am glad to see you wont be back to check this, because the administrator didn’t slam you… Someone else did. Bye Bye.

    I do look forward to getting my XDS back. Would I like it back today? Yes. but not if it isn’t fixed correctly. I can wait. I went back to carrying another firearm. As stated earlier, some of you would complain if you were on the receiving end of oral sex. Get a life people. This is not a recall for the heater in your car. It’s a gun! Can’t handle it? Tough luck. Buy a slingshot. Maybe not, you’d complain about the rubber band.

    I believe we would all be happy if SA would just give us an idea of when “our” guns would be back to us or at least an approx.

    A lot of energy has been spent in other directions, I don’t call or email.. I just sit and wait. Thank God I already had an alternate carry pistol I could use. (Shield 9mm)

    How many are being fixed and shipped daily and what number am I… They don’t even have to do the math, I can figure it out on my own.

      I sent 3 in on aug 30. Received my 9mm today and one 45 is coming tomorrow and the other 45 is coming Friday. Hope this helps you figure out from your return date. You ca go to the recall site and click get started and re-enter you serial number. It updates every evening and wi go from received to repaired to shipped. FYI the last 45 showed received last night and shipped today so they are turning around faster than the updates.

          I wonder if this fix does anything about the Remington UMC not able to eject unfired round issue. The round is longer than anything else i use… even my +p stuff… But the UMC is cheep if you can find it at Walmart.

    I wanted to commend Springfield for their actions in all aspects, yes, I have been without my EDC for a short while, but have been using my previous EDC in its place which also just so happens to be an XD. The timeframe that my firearm takes to be returned to me is irrelevant in comparison to the piece of mind that it will function properly even if the possibility of a factory related malfunction was only miniscule. The fact that Springfield was open about the recall regardless if they had a fix in place speaks highly of them in my opinion because it shows that the safety of their customers was at the top of their priority list even if it was to prevent a possible lawsuit. Is there really anybody who gives a darn what EXACTLY causes the possible malfunction? the simple fact that there is a 1:1000000 chance something could happen is good enough for me.
    Administrator: I applaud you for telling it like it is, a small contingent of people have done nothing but prove they have no business handling a firearm and are probably better off not owning one. Keep up the good work and I look forward to receiving my upgraded pistol at the conclusion of its upgrade process.

    In addition to my CA CCW with my Glock 23, I went for my NV CCW as well. So there I was in the class with an instructor, gunsmith & proclaimed “Glock hater” who carried a XD 40.
    My Glock is very nice with a few upgrades from the Glock Store (great place to visit if in San Diego, everyone is armed)… so while shooting the target he asked me if I wanted to try the XD. I did and now I own one. I shot the XD better the firt time I shot it VS thousands of rounds with my 23.
    It just fit better…. kinda strange. So I’m very interested in the new XDs 45 as well…..

    Many thanks to Springfield for the integrity of this fine American firm. My xds performed flawlessly and with unexpected accuracy. I had previously been exposed to many rifles, shotguns and hand guns in my Navy retirement job as a firearms instr/range officer. I think that I need to say that this xd type pistol has an out of the norm quality. xds seems to have the reliability of a revolver and the convenience of an auto loader….nice job springfield! Now for a statement that I’m sure will bring a lot of flack, “in the 9mm pistol field, there is no equal to the Browning Hi-power (model of P35)”. There I’ve said it……oops? With respect to all my 2nd amendment brothers and sister, best wishes, Ralph Porter, cpo, usn, ret.

    1st a question: Did you receive anything from Springfield for this review? 2nd: Springfield has lost my loyalty for life. I could care less if they had to hire and train dozens of employees or not, this is a result of their design failure and their recall. I agree with other shooters on this blog, they made a mistake and have done very little to make it right. They should have been up front when the recall began that they did not have a good fix for the issue. They also should have communicated better with customers. Finally, what has Springfield done besides fixing a weapon that was defective and would have gotten them a hefty court loss? i.e. did they provide any sort of compensation or any “we are sorry we suck” kit back to the customers? It would have been as easy as adding a four dollar pinky rest and a nice note or an extra magazine as other gun manufactures do when they screw up. Not Springfield though, they thank you for your “patience” and “loyalty” on their recall webpage without obvious knowledge that their customer base is pissed off at the way they handled this. I am done with Springfield. The XDS will not be my off duty weapon any longer and I will never buy a Springfield product again. If you are as dissapointed as I am in the way they handled this then dont buy their products, inform your friends, teammates, departments, veterans groups, shooting groups, etc.. I have.

    P.S. – Springfield – ever think about answering emails you have received about the recall? Just one more flaw in your business plan I guess.

      Just how many emails do you think they can answer in a day? There were no accidents with the gun and nobody seems to even be able to get it to do that. Hefty court loss? And no, we didn’t get paid to write this. Springfield has been a long time advertiser here, but so have Ruger, SW, Glock, CZ, Kahr, Kel-Tec and Walther, all makers of black plastic pistols. In a similar circumstance we would stand up and fight back for any one of our dedicated manufacturers in this industry. The internet has become a source of pollutants where small minded people have big voices, so that other small minded sheep can repeat what they say. GunsAmerica is at least one place in the gun industry where the small minded are told they are small minded, and publicly humiliated as fools who should keep their mouths shut.

    It amazes me, all these people nowadays, since the day of the Internet you all ‘WANT IT NOW’. You all want to be ‘UPDATED IMMEDIATLY’, and you have have no patience at all. Not even you old schoolers, you should be ashamed of yourselves. In a couple of years this two to three months will be just a speck of time that you won’t even remember. Wow the internet and a blog is something soo powerful isnt it. GA puts out an article about an update that the XD-S’s are shipping back, and now it is like it opened up a whole new can of worms, and everybody is disatified, getting rid if theirs, or stupid or a fool. Hell GA told you they are shipping them back!! What is so hard to figure out about that? Oh I guess it’s just because you don’t have it on your hands ‘NOW’ just like everything else nowadays. I just want them to fix it right, and send it back, because I understand this is life and poop happens. I must be getting old.

    can anybody confirm are they send out additional mags after the repairs have been made to these guns. They’ve had mine since 9\5\13 and have not answered any emails I sent asking about the return time or if I could buy additional mags at discounted prices for the long turn around time.

    Springfield has the worst customer service. I sent my pistol in the first week of Sept, it is still not back and no idea when it is. I work in the DoD and if this company ever came up for Source Selection I would have deep reservations on giving this company favorable consideration. The XDS is the first Springfield I have bought and my last.

    I bought the XDS 45 because I love a small 45 as a carry gun. At 20 yards I can hold a saucer type of group so this was the one for me…or so I thought. I have three Sigs and this was my first Springfield, also my last. I work behind the gun counter at a local sporting goods store and try to give feedback on the good and bad of different firearms we sell. Well, Springfield has handled this like a second-rate company; they have had my weapon since 9-4-13; no feedback to me as to when I will receive my weapon; call 8-10 times with no answer; etc, etc, etc. When I get my weapon back it will be sold (this is the opinion of several owners that I have sold to) and I will NOT buy a Springfield of any type in the future.

        All I stated was the obvious. There are several web sites where owners are saying the same thing. Instead of calling people names maybe you should take a middle of the road attitude and admit Springfield screwed the pooch on this recall. The information our company received on the recall stated plainly they did NOT have the “fix” on the weapon. So, Mr Adminstrator, explain that…it’s in plain english on their letterhead.

The rest of them are the same small minded fools like you see in the comments here, like the guy who works at a gun shop and decided to get rid of his before he even shot the upgraded gun, and the guy who traded his before sending it in. If you want to follow the advice of small minded fools, then so be it. Everone knows that at GunsAmerica our reviews are the truth, despite advertisers and money and everything that governs the articles in the print mags and nearly every other internet gun website. If you can’t handle the truth that Springfield did the best they could to get the recall process running smoothly, then you can’t handle it. Go be a silly little sheepee on the gun forums.

    I am a retired tooling engineer,and what I dont understand, Is why their Quaity Control people did not find these problems befor they started to ship these FINE FIRARMS.??? Some bodys head should role. And maybe more than one, I never let a tool go out the door until I was sure that is was right, And I never had A RECALL. I test fired one of the XDS 45s at one of our local gun shops, And it was a very disapointment to say the least,of the 10 rounds I put thru it, the slide would not come back to battery.I assumed that was the fault of the dealer for not cleaning it. SO I BOUGHT ONE ANYWAY.and then I heard from a dealer about the recall. And I had not even fired it. Maybe that was a good thing HUH? I will be glad to get it back, Maybe it will work okay HUH?

      It is a very rare occurrence, and took them a long time just to duplicate the issue. It isn’t an engineering problem it results from foreign contaminants.

            Nobody is going to tell anyone how to duplicate the problem, but I think the article was clear that the problem is real, yet remote. I was not told how to duplicate it but have heard through the grapevine that it involved foreign contaminants.

            The problem is real, and I would suspect it was a matter of time before any of the pistols would experience the problem. My XDs did. Second round from the mag didn’t go bang. On examination, it wasn’t fully in battery, and the round wasn’t fully chambered. So I dropped the mag and cleared it. The round had a pretty significant off-center ding in it. It very easily could have resulted in an out of battery detonation. I chalked the problem up to a feed issue with the hollow point ammo I was shooting, and set the pistol aside, planning to contact Springfield about the problem (but never got around to it before hearing about the recall a few days later). I cleaned it before sending it back (as instructed) and didn’t come across any “foreign contaminants”.
            The only problem I have had with the recall was I never received the initial email with the link to the FedEx shipping label. I was able to get through by phone after several attempts, and the friendly person sent one by email. My pistol went back in early October, and is supposed to be back to me by Thanksgiving.
            Calling this an “upgrade” instead of a fix, is a stretch. But I’m sure that’s what the lawyers required.

            Our tests have showed that the stiff, won’t go into battery issue goes away after a few magazines.

            The problem I had occurred after at least 10 magazines. The first 50 rounds were fired with 230 gr FMJ ammo. Me and a shooting buddy were knocking down falling plates. We found the pistols sights to be right on and the pistol to be easy to shoot. No problems.
            I then test fired some 180 gr JHPs (this was intended to be my carry ammo, so I wanted to be sure they cycled). First mag went off OK. The problem occurred on the second mag. I just assumed it was a feed problem due to the truncated front end of the bullet. I wouldn’t have thought much about it, and would have simply concluded the JHP ammo was unreliable in the pistol, except the round that didn’t go into battery had the deep dent in the primer.
            The issue maybe ammo-specific. But the fact the primer is impacted prior to going into battery explains the need for the safety recall.

            Are you suggesting that someone should try to duplicate a potential out-of-battery detonation?

            I had the problem with my XDs. The round that didn’t go into battery had a significant ding on the primer. I suppose if you had been there, you would have suggested to “try to duplicate the problem” I would suggest…I’m not that stupid.

    I was disappointed in Springfield’s latest update. They said they have upgraded and returned thousands of pistols. That could mean 2000, 10000, 50000 or whatever. I believe their bean counters know exactly how many guns were upgraded and returned in the last week, and they know exactly how many guns they have on hand to be upgraded at the end of the week. I would like them to be upfront and give numerical data. We can extrapolate from that data. I understand that their efficiency will likely increase, but their “update” really told me nothing other than they are working on it and will update us next week.
    If they upgraded 2000 guns in a week and have 200,000 to do, we could be in for a very long wait for our guns, but if they upgraded 40,000 guns in a week and have 80,000 to do then it won’t be long. Give us the facts!!!

        After rereading my post dated Oct. 26, I find no indication of a lack of understanding of what “next week” means. Seemingly, you are trying to deflect the reader’s attention from the real issue. The real issue is: Springfield issued an update containing vague information when specific data was, or should have been, available.
        Regarding the second sentence of your response, the update I received states “we have greatly increased our staff” (past tense) and says nothing about present or future staffing changes. I could lower myself to your level and ask what you don’t understand about past tense, but I’ll leave that type of comment to you.
        It appears that you are in Springfield’s pocket, and will say anything to defend them even if it means you have to embarrass yourself.

    I found out the recall totally by accident. I was having issues with my .45 XD-S that I brought 2 weeks before the recall started. everytime I would fire the slide wouldn’t go all the way foward so when I tried to fire again nothing would happen. When I called springfield the next day that’s when I found out about the recall. They told me they would fix both issues. It kind of sucked that I got my CHL, got a gun, and then have to send it away barely 2 weeks later. I have 500 rounds just sitting here since september…

      If you had fired another 20 or so of the rounds you would have seen the battery problem go away. They are a little stiff at first and you have to really muscle the spring, but after a couple mags it goes away.

        That was not the case with mine. After 250+ rounds! mine still had light primer strikes.
        I had recently gotten mine back ( still having light primer strikes ) then had to send it back again for this recall.
        Do you think I will ever be able to trust this gun for concealed carry??
        A little research shows I am not the only one experiencing this problem.

      I bought my XDs 9 and the next day I read about the recall. I never had a chance to fire a single round. Was waiting for the weekend. At least I can use my wife’s LC9. It my be purple in color, sure i get a few wise cracks from the guys but I don’t have to wait to head out for the range. I sent mine out almost 2 month ago and getting tired of waiting.

    Just got my XD=S 9 back but no range time as yet. For me, it is the sweetest little gun on the market. It is light, concealable, and fun to shoot; I can’t ask for more than that.
    At first I was a little peeved about the recall, but since I am an adult, I waited to pass judgment until I had sufficient evidence. Sure, it took longer than expected but it was worth it in the end. Springfield sent my gun back in a nice little carry case and included the extended magazine for free.
    After fondling that little thing for several days, I am still totally in love with it and can’t wait to get to the range. So screw all the haters out there; I love my gun and it doesn’t hate! Oh yes, I have Glocks, Rugers, Kahrs, Kel-Tecs, XDms, and Berrettas as well, so get over it!

    I sent my XDS9 Sn XS916217 to Springfield on September 27 2013 via Fed EX because I only heard of the recall when watching a Hickok 45 Video, I just received the Snail Mail recall notice Oct 24 2013 so I wonder if the Left Hand Knows what the Right Hand is doing, Do they even know they have my Gun or was it lost in shipping! Just wondering

    First: I wrote a post on my blog with about 14,000 views detailing the abysmal response to SA on my questions that they could not answer… after the many times I called what amounted to a worthless phone number (Why even have a phone number if a) you can’t get through, and b) no one can answer your questions when you DO get through?)

    Second: there were a wide variety of ways this could have been handled better.

    Third: I’ve been unarmed for almost 60 days now, with no end in sight.

    Fourth: must be great to have a propaganda arm at their beck and call… since you got a recalled .45 back before I got mine… and mine was one of the very first sent in and I STILL don’t have it…. and

    Fifth: it may not be true that it was a first come, first served repaired as claim: as laid out in a comment I received below –

    My pistol was delivered on Sept 3rd but wasn’t logged in until the 6th. They said that there was no possible way for them to tell me where I am at in the queue to be repaired. I was told this repeatedly which means that they cannot possibly repair the pistols in the order in which they received. They have the RMA numbers and delivery date and fedex history. They absolutely could put them in order and tell everyone what “number” they are in line, and could tell us what numbers have been repaired and shipped back. My guess is that they scanned the boxes and stacked them in a pile and are randomly taking a box and doing the repair. So first in is in the back of the pile. IF they started at all. Until someone says “I got mine back” I don’t believe it for a minute!!!
    Of the 40 comments I’ve received,, many of them are in the same vein.

    My XDs was also received there at the same time.

    So, here’s the deal: I can’t count on them to communicate at all, let alone honestly; their customer service continues to be a nightmare, and I am going to dump my brand new, never-fired XDs the moment I can get it back, likely to some schlep who hasn’t heard of the recall.

    I will never buy another Springfield product again, and I will advise my friends to do the same.

    If that somehow makes me a “fool….” well, I guess I’ll just have to live with it.

    Been Waiting 40 years
    I have been shooting for over 40 years. I have always liked the 45 round but never found or owned a 45 pistol that I like. I have many guns, but my new XDS45 is cream of the crop Thanks SA. I miss my XDS BAD! If it takes awhile to get it back so be it. It is the perfect carry gun. SA says it will shoot better groups, Hell I could squirrel hunt with mine! I knock the center out of every target I shoot. So lets just chill out an wait for the best ever carry gun to get back home. Grow up an stop the name calling. Again Thanks Springfield .

    I shot an XDS in Jan. 2011 at a trade show in Dallas, I ordered one as soon as possible and received it in July. I have carried it every day since, I can not say how many times I dropped the slide on a round without a problem, as soon as I heard about the recall I sent mine in.I don’t care how long it takes to get my gun back i will be happy to have it. SA’s customer service is second to none, as a dealer I have dealt with quite a few,they have always answered my inquiry’s promptly and courteously. I have replaced all my other polymer pistols with Springfields and will continue to recommend them above others. I patiently the return of my pistol Knowing it will be as good or better than when I sent it in.

    So many whine asses about this firearm. My God, why don’t you guys grow up? It is the (1st) recall for any Springfield firearm EVER !!! Have you ever sent back any other firearm for a recall?? Sure you have.I own 28 different 1911’s and in my life I have sent back handguns and long guns for recalls. Ammo, now there is another product that has had recalls. I’m just glad the Springfield has found what could have been a real problem for someone. It is said to be a voluntary recall. Not mandatory recall..Many of you sound like whinny kids. It’s going to be better, and last I heard they are pitching in a new mag. I don’t mind the wait, and then to hear some of you are selling yours and getting a Glock? For heaven sake not a “Block” Now you own an XDS and your going to get a “Block” to replace it. Now you really have lost your mind. I’ll be silent no longer !! Thanks Springfield for a superb .45 caliber firearm, only to be the 2nd best firearm made next to John M. Browning’s 1911!!

    Great to hear that shipping has started
    Returned mine on the second day of the recall and haven’t heard anything yet.
    I’m more than a little concerned that returns will be random as it sounds as if Springfield was a little overwhelmed.
    I can’t imagine how difficult it has been for this company and it’s management.
    Hopefully I will get to shoot my new XDS for the first time in the near future

    I cannot believe all the CRYING! The recall was fast and appropriate for a very well established companies “FIRST EVER” recall of this caliber! I really do not understand why anyone would be so upset that they have to wait a little while to get their pistol back from a SAFETY RECALL! I am just glad that SA realized the problem, Manned Up, and submitted the recall so they could get a safe, quality, pistol back into the hands of their customers. I really do not care how long it takes SA to fix my pistol, I just want my pistol back when they are convinced it is safe for me and my family. I have a Kimber Ultra Raptor II to carry while I wait for my XDs45.

    old man here who carried a “plastic” “toy” M16A1 in Nam. Saved my life and cost several of those theirs who carried that good old school AK47 Knock not the plastic weapon for the end is still steel the bullet flies true.. Await the return of my xds 45. Still the far BEST tuk shooter around

    I personally bought an XDS 9mm new and had it for a few weeks before I heard about the recall. I happened to find out from the gun shop when I went to pick up a new holster. I don’t feel that Springfield should be responsible for my lack of knowledge given that i hadn’t even registered it. How would they have known i had it? Once i found out, I sent it in immediately and they have had it since Sept. 16th. As for the customer service, I feel that it has been great so far. A week after I sent mine in, I called the company to ask a question about the return process back to me. i was on hold for maybe 5 minutes and got my questions answered quickly. True they gave an estimated turnaround time of 30 days which has passed, but honestly, i’d rather them take there time and fix it right rather than rushing it back to me.
    I think the effort that has been taken online to keep owners aware of the procedures being taken and update as they progress has been GREAT. I am waiting patiently for mine to return and feel confident that Springfield will make us happy with the upgrade.
    I’d also like to note that I have never had a problem with any of Springfields and this incident doesn’t alter my opinion of Springfield being a great company. If people really want to cry about something, try calling technical support for some of these major computer and electronics companies. See how much love and info you get out of them.:) Good Luck!

    Stand up customer service and pride in your product have generally been left in the dust. Regrettably, I never even loaded a magazine. I purchased one day, learned of the recall, and sent it in the next. I could not be happier. Thank The Lord that this Company decided that spending a vast amount of capital and potentially tarnishing their reputation was offset by the issue of safety. I carry everyday, this is not a game or a hobby, thank you for taking your role as seriously as I do.

    i have i own two xds pistol’s one in .45 and one in 9mm. sent back Aug 29Th still waiting this whole recall thing has put me off and i will not buy another Springfield gun ever .for a company to blow smoke up people’s butt straight out lie to get the guns in the warehouse .said they had a fix when in fact they didn’t then offer up a mag as a sorry . not designing there own stuff importing everything with the Springfield logo on it waiting for the actual manufacturer to fix the problem . its to bad the fan boys out there will take the bs by the spoon full. s&w handled there recall a hell of a lot better faster and more professional maybe its because they actually make there own product !

    Please allow me to add my 2 cents. I have a Kimber 5″ Target Elite and a Kimber Eclipse Ultra that I enjoy and with which I am a fair shot. I am 75 years young and so not as good as I once was. However after purchasing a Springfield XDs and mounting a Crimson Trace laser on the rail out front I was able to put the first two rounds through intersecting holes at 75 feet. I was using a trailer side as a steady rest. I am Happy, Happy Happy to quote Phil. I don’t mind waiting at all!! My 5″ never shot that well!

    Sent my daughter’s and my XDS 45s the Wednesday after Labor Day so they should be back middle of next week. I am very pleased with the guns, less pleased with the problem, very pleased with the speed of the recall and very pleased with the Customer Service, it’s been much more pleasant that I would have thought .

    That said, I won’t be carrying my XDS after this. Nope, giving my daughter mine so she’ll have a back up of the same type and caliber. I think I will replace mine with another XDS ;figure we’ll see some fire sale pricing from the disgruntled and nervous.

    All in all, I am happy with my little plastic pistol. It compliments my 1911s just fine .

    The fact is SA did a very poor job managing this recall.

    Like others, I had just bought the gun, and accessories, and trained on it, and started carrying it, and then on the 28th of August, I shipped it in. No sign of it yet.

    I was forced to repeat the purchase, get different accessories, retrain with a new gun and start carrying that. Not acceptable.

    Administrator, you can support SA all you want, but if the next new car you got, went in for a 2 or 3 month recall, and you had to buy another or walk, how would you feel? I suppose if Springfield Armory made that car you would be fine with it?

      If you drove a $600 car it would not be subject to recall lol. That makes it an apples and oranges comparison. A $600 gun would be the same as a $600 TV, stove, refrigerator, and on most of those things you would expect a 4-6 week turnaround at best. Like a firearm, losing any of those things, if they were your only one, would be inconvenient, but a recall is not something everyone jumps for joy about regardless. Problems happen in life. It is your G-d given right to whine about them, but as many people have noted here, this was probably a best case scenario for a first recall from a small company.

        I have to disagree with the article about the trigger. The new trigger is trash!!! Its a lot heavier and stiffer, the recall has killed my love for the XDs. I was even willing to throw money at the problem with SA is unable or unwilling to help.

        I called their custom shop to schedule a trigger job and they are out of parts for a XDs trigger. They also have no idea when they will be getting parts in and suggested I call back in 60 days. So, now I’m stuck with a gun which I don’t like the trigger and I have no course of action from a change that was pushed on me.

      What fun is it to only own one gun? Can I assume you have more than one car? Most Americans do. A lot of gun owners have been convinced that owning more than one gun is akin to being a kook whack job, not so. At least now you have two, and since you broke the ice, go buy some more! Besides having options, you’ll contribute to scaring the pants off anti-gunners when they punch numbers into their calculators and realize that America’s law abiding gun owners are very well armed. After shooting, there is nothing better than a bunch of anti-gunners running around with calculators and no pants screaming “There is no way we confiscate all of them!”

    Bought a Kahr P45 Sept 14. Nothing but trouble from day 1.
    I have a Springfield Armory XD45 4″ Service model I bought in 2005. Sweet.
    I had more problems with the Kahr P45 in the first 8 days than I’ve had with my XD45 in 8 years.
    The Kahr was a rash of Failure to Feed(FTF) and Failure to Eject(FTE) issues from the first magazine. Break in was 200 rounds. Ok.
    But after 500 rounds and much polishing with Emory cloth, it still fails to go into battery. The factory wanted me to pay $91 to ship the thing back to them. No. I demanded that they pay shipping both ways. After 3 phone calls where I left messages, someone called a week later. I was told instead of 1-2 weeks, it would be 3-4 weeks. On the Kahrtalk.com message board, I see many threads from people with the same problems. There has been no recall. No offer to ship and fix for free. I had to ask for all of that. Now I have to sit and cool my jets while I wait for my pistol to come back. And I have NO CONFIDENCE that it will be repaired. Why? Because of all the people who have gone before me who got theirs back from Kahr still experience the same problem.
    I don’t own an XDs, but I wish I bought that instead of this Kahr P45. Quality Control and Customer Service sucks.

    I bought two XDs .45s when they came out, love them both; one for daily carry, one to hide in a special place. Shoot well, never a problem. No long break-in required like a Kimber. Once the backlog of upgrades/repairs gets worked through, I’ll send mine in (one at a time) for the upgrade. As far as the recall, it’s like the bumper stickers say, “it happens.” It’s new technology, yeah, I’m a little disappointed, but I’ll get over it. I do still have my old Glock 27 (first gen) to carry me through till Springfield gets around to my guns. Like many of the guys my age here, I resisted “tupperware” guns for a long time, but, after a lot of shooting, I’m convinced that polymer is the way to go. I’ve had a stainless S&W revolver stop shooting on the 3rd round out of the box, there is no magic in steel (or polymer), just sometimes you go back to the drawing board……

      That is part of my opinion that I am keeping to myself. There is still definitely a pull through before it breaks. But there is a change, and the change is why it shoots better.

    I am on board as far as the Springfield’s growing pains during the total recall of its XDS lineup.
    I’ve been involved in Quality Control for over thirty years and I would like to suggest to Springfield that every upgraded unit be fired tested at the factory prior to its return, and shipped back together with the actual spent shell, as proof of the unit’s safety and renewed operability.
    This simple and inexpensive practice has served well in developing S&W brand loyalty.

    For everyone who wants to criticize SA for customer service, my view is excellent company- case closed.
    I bought a 1927M1-A Kahr Arms 45 cal Thompson that didn’t shoot out of the box. Returned it to have a “too long” screw repaired and got it back with no thanks or indication of gratitude for my patronage, no email telling me it had been shipped, no communication period. In fact I sent an email inquiry regarding problems with the gun and never received a response of any kind. Kahr might make some good stuff, but I could care less after enjoying their brand of customer service. Springfield Armory has made me a loyal customer for life.

      No, none of the above on most days. And yes, that is what I am saying. To trade away a gun that is in high demand and could be sold for more than you paid for one thing was, ahem, stupid. That you would not investigate the “defect” for actual function would also be another, um, stupid thing. Then bragging about it as if you were correct in doing these things, and that somehow Springfield being extra cautious and losing millions of dollars and a bulletproof reputation was a detriment to the company, strike three, and possibly four. Whining to customer service that the owner of the company is childish, which everyone already knows, (ya he did it), also really speaks volumes Greg. Each to his own of course. I was waiting for the armchair executives to show up and you happened to be one of the first. Notice how silent the rest of our regulars have been.

    Josh, ……. I spent a year in Iraq and Afghanistan. I survived because I carried real guns made of steal. When they are dropped and bagged around in the rocks, well.. maybe you get the picture.. It would have sucked to have had a plastic trigger break off! I don’t think the Taliban would have given me a new one? If all you do or have done is played on a gun range then I am sorry, because you can’t begin to understand anything I am saying. If your wondering what quality is, visit a gun show sometime and stay out of your local gun shops unless they have a collection room of quality. Everyone rants and raves about the plastic gun markets today because they don’t know any better, that is all they have grown up with and the gun manufactures know it. They are laughing all the way tho the bank. Go buy a Kimber if you want quality. Then again, if you want something to last and hand down to your grand childern your going to spend 1200 to 1500… Three to $500 doesn’t get you much these days, when all you can afford to buy is something made of a polymor/plastic frame and internal parts. You guys will be real proud to hand down your plastic guns do your grand children someday, you have got to be kidding me…really!

      Sounds like you don’t regularly carry a concealed weapon in “the world.” Size and weight are considerations for civilian carry of a firearm. Nothing beats a polymer frame for weight savings. It might not last as long as a steel or alloy frame, but if you don’t carry your steel hog regularly because it weighs too much, it might not be there when you need it. I’m only 5’8″ and 170, but I regularly carry a full-size XDM. But sometimes my apparel doesn’t conceal the big rig, so I have to go smaller, and sometimes being lighter makes a difference too (the XDS is my carry gun when cycling – and cyclists tend to be weight wienies-very concerned about weight).

    The reviewer may want to take a closer look before saying there is no visable difference to the frame when field stripped. The grip safety originally had an arm that came over the top of the sear to stop it from moving if the grip safety wasn’t depressed (you can see it in the top frame in the photo). That arm, along with the corresponding notch in the sear are now gone (as seen in the bottom frame in the photo).

    I’m in my mid-50’s, have been shooting automatics and revolvers for probably 45 years, and am a C&R FFL Colt and Winchester collector. Until I shot the XDS .45 my benchmark favorite was the 1911 National Match. For me the XDS holds all the qualities I seek in concealed carry weapon. It’s quality control and precision are better than most of the competition, certainly better than most anything Colt produced outside of their Custom Shop, and it shoots more naturally than a Gen 3 Glock, for sure. On close exam of the internals there are no sharp edges to the polymer materials. The gun is machined to very close tolerances and the machine marks have been removed from all areas visible on slide removal. I see the XDS as having zero drawbacks for a heavy hitting concealed carry weapon and only time will tell if it becomes a widespread favorite.

I am still in the military/Air Force and there is an obvious reason why we (Security Forces) do not use plastic side arms but instead use the Beretta Model 92 all metal frame gun. We cannot afford a recall when duty calls. I can’t explain it any clearer than that…

      Speaking only for myself and as a retired MSG from the “parent service” (US Army), you are probably a New Guy in the Air Force(just guessing and by-the-way…Thank you for taking over for us retired guys). The Beretta did have it’s challenges also. The first iteration had problems with slides breaking while being fired and causing the operator serious facial damage. The fix was setting an arbitrary rounds-down-range limit, before replacing the slide. So even “all metal” firearms (the term “GUN” is frowned upon by Old Guy military types, do some push-ups as your nea-culpa) can have their problems. So, Larry, please stay safe and keep paying those taxes… that is my retirement. Further, I promise to spend said retirement on “Wine, Women, and Song” anything that is left over, I will probably just waste!

      Nonsense. The reason you don’t use a polymer frame gun is because the only one around at the time the switch was made from the 1911 to the Beretta in 1985 the only handgun manufacturer building a polymer frame pistol with any real production capacity was Glock and Gaston Glock would not enter the biding because he would not agree with some of the terms of the RFP which required that he release his patent rights so that, if necessary, the guns could be made by other manufacturers. That left Beretta and SIG and Beretta offered the better long term deal. It’s really that simple.

      I’m personally a big fan of Beretta, but If you think Berettas haven’t had their share of problems, you’re just poorly educated on the subject.

    The people complaining about how long the process is taking are the same ones who would’ve been the first to sue if SA had left the guns in the hands of users until they had the fix and parts on hand, jeopardizing the safety of the owners.

    I love my XDS45 and am considering getting the 9mm version. Looking forward to getting mine back. As for customer service, the one time I called I didn’t have the RMA number but the lady took the time to research and give me status.

    I did like my XD-S a lot. Am very displeased with the poor customer service from Springfield and I do own 6 other Springfield pistols and 2 rifles so am loyal customer but this recall handling will impact my future dealings with them. Sure seems the site administrator here is wholly in Springfield’s pocket on this matter…you instantly jump to there defense even using derogatory language in addressing we that have opinions other then yours. I have enjoyed your articles for a long time but now wonder about your loyalties considering your jumping down our throats because we’re not as anxious to suck up to Springfield as you are. Time and sales numbers will reflect how this turns out in long term. Haven’t got mine back yet (sent back in august), have went back to carrying my Kimber Ultra carry and am again very happy with it. They were very dismissive of my inquiries at S.A. so I’ll not give them a good recommendation after this regardless of how cocky the administrator of Guns America gets with me. Thanks for allowing me to give my point of view.

They have been taking a beating from internet mavens, many of whom don’t even own an XD-S, and you couldn’t ask them to do any better than they have done. Springfield isn’t some corporate conglomerate run by lawyers and stockholders. They have been hiring and training people since the day this began, and you can only do that so fast. People should know by now that if they post self righteous poorly thought comments they are going to get beat up here. Stupidity is stupidity, and self righteous stupidity is the worst kind. We are indeed in Springfield’s corner, and not because they advertise with us. Glock is advertising on the homepage today in fact. It doesn’t change anything, and the truth is that Springfield is a small company that is grateful for every customer they have, and they are doing the best they can right now in a tough situation.

        Horace can’t write, compose, punctuate, capitalize, differentiate words and contractions from homophones, or spell correctly, yet he feels competent to criticize a manufacturer that could not create a completely new factory to design a critical safety modification, establish a receiving and classification department, tool up an assembly line and train a new staff of skilled workers to perform critical work with absolutely zero defects so that he could have his pistol back by his own arbitrary deadline. Would I like to have my XD-s back now? Yes! Am I willing to wait to have the modification done properly, in my proper place in line? Yes! Is there a Horace on the negative side of every accomplishment ever achieved by mankind? Obviously! Should we care? NO!

          This is my first visit to this forum and I have enjoyed reading all the various perspectives on this firearm and the support or criticism of SA’s handling of this recall. This is certainly a passionate group and I respect everyone’s opinions.
          I too own and carry an XDS and as a shooter that uses a firearm for reasons other than target practice, I need to be confident that any weapon I carry will perform predictably when needed. Most of the posters in this discussion own and are comfortable carrying multiple weapons so I’m not sure why there is such concern over how long the repairs are taking to complete?
          Personally, I would rather wait three months to get a safe and reliable firearm back in my arsenal as opposed to having some novice fumble through speedy repairs to send me back a firearm that could cost me my life if it malfunctions. I think SA erred on the side of caution and has spent millions of dollars they likely didn’t need to spend in order to address “Potential” life safety concerns. I respect and appreciate their concerns for my safety and expect my XDS sometime after the holidays. In the mean time, I’m perfectly comfortable with my Crimson Pro Carry or XDM for CC.

    I like many owners of the XDs.45 really miss this great gun. I look forward to the day it comes back and returns to the EDC . For now I am for now I am back to carrying a Walther PK380. I thought this was THE gun until I fired a XDs.45. I was a range one day and another owner let me shoot. After just 2 rounds, yes rounds, I knew that this was a gun I had to have. I have arthuritic hands and found the PK.380 allowed me to work the slide easily, so I got it. It shot well and I had some good groupings. Once I got the XDs ad shot, the grouping were tighter, much closer to point of aim.
    When hearing of he recall my first thought was Man there ain’t nothing wrong with my gun and went to the range. When I got home I checked my email and reread the notice. What if? What if? It was in my head. I had plans to take my wife and daughter out with me soon and teach them how to shoot and how to unload just in case. Neither like guns, but with kids and grandkids around they do need to know how to handle the guns.
    What If…..one got hurt? What if one while unloading to make it safe shot one of our kids or grand kids?
    It got back to Springfield quickly. I was able to track it thru.
    Yes there were some communications issues. I feel that Springfield did step up and did a good job. After your review I am looking forward to getting the gun back and really looking forward to shooting, maybe with even better groupings. I have thought of getting another gun and have even thought of the 9mm. Hey Xmas is coming.
    We have plans for an afternoon out at the farm and will be shooting. I even found some .380 ammo and will have them shooting both. Thanks for the great review.

    I think many of us forget our history. Yes companies can change as I have been through this. But this is Springfield Armory. This is a company that made, in my opinion, the best combat rifle, historically, to date. I own a Springfield M1 Garand that my uncle fought with in WWII. To this date at 100 yards it will stack shots if benched and bagged. I bought my XDs 45 early. The accuracy was incredible. I’m a range officer with a large organization. So I get to shoot a lot of different weapons, from old to new. I also own a Glock 17. You ask any LEO or Servicemen and you will get the same answer most of the time. The Glock can be torn down rinsed off with water hose, dried and spayed with WD-40 in the field and function every time with 18 shots. When I received my XDs 45 I had the same feeling. The accuracy for me was outstanding. Never a Fail to fire or feed. I fired every type of round I could get and no problems.

    As far as the re call. Do some research and check historical data and you find re calls on many weapons for different reasons. This was a responsible call as soon as they caught it. My Shield had a recall and I have no problem with that. Gentlemen, These are mechanical devices where safety is paramount. Because it is mechanical things happen. Thank God no one was injured or killed. In my 40 years of shooting I have seen some strange things happen with guns. Some will never be heard because the issue was taken care of and was not a widespread issue. The Springfield name defended this country and my uncle through some of the roughest treatment you could put a weapon through. Ease up… Aviation is my background and there are no do overs at 35,000 feet. This is why we have oversight and take care of issues either immediate or a possible potential problem. The same goes for a gun. We have polymers today that have incredible strength and through R&D are improving and progressing to levels we cannot ignore. I had no trouble with the website. It took me less than five minutes and a short trip. Mine was sent in early and will be back soon and look forward to shooting the new pistol and getting it back on my side.

        Yes I’m aware of the name only Springfield. As an RO I get to shoot a lot of different weapons and own many. We have a WWII competition that consists of only WWII weapons/rifles. It’s great! To see these old jewels still incredibly accurate is amazing. It is a sanctioned match so a lot of guys have CMP weapons.

    I can’t wait to get my XDs back. I’ve been carrying my SR1911 in the meantime, sometimes my LCP. The only thing that concerns me about the recall is that it floated to the surface just how dense and/or immature a lot of owners are. I just hope none of the anti-gun crowd reads any of the bleating on the XD forum because it would be great ammo in demonstrating how some people are just too stupid to be allowed to own a gun.

      Nick: (and others now reading this blog) Amen to your last sentence. I have received my .45 XDs and will be shooting it this weekend in SC. SA did, in my opinion, an incredible job of handling what had to be a gigantic logistics nightmare. Keep in mind, folks, this was their *FIRST* recall. It’s not like many, if ANY of us, would know how to handle this kind of situation in our own jobs as well. Thanks, SA (and ADMINISTRATOR)….It’s gotta be tough keeping a cool head in the heat of the criticism by some fools. There are others out here that appreciate your proactive handling of what might have been a serious (deadly?) situation. Nobody hurt (aside from feelings by nitwits) and I thank you very much.

    I was very close to buying an XDS 9, I ended up with a Bersa BP-9cc. My friend has the XDS in 45 and he wont send it in, says the turn around time is too long. We spend time at the range shooting and it gave me a chance to try the XDS and I really don’t care for it. I have large hands and the Bersa fits very well while the XDS is a bit cramped and I’m spoiled by the Bersa’s trigger pull. Funny a person wouldn’t know this unless your able to shoot each gun side by side. My XDS buddy still has his 45 but he liked the Bersa so much he now has one too.

      I, for one, applaud Springfield for acting swiftly and keeping me apprised of the situation each week. I’m a PR professional and I plan on using this as a text book example of averting a disaster through honest and clear communications. I thoroughly enjoyed shooting my XDs for the few weeks I had it prior to the recall and I eagerly look forward to getting it back. And after reading this article and learning that several other parts were upgraded makes me satisfied with the whole thing. Sure, I’d rather still have it, but knowing I’ll be getting it back – fixed, upgraded and factory inspected – at no cost to me makes it all worth it. I’ve got plenty of others to use in the meantime, but I’ll be replacing my daily carry with my XDs as soon as I get it back and put a few hundred rounds through it.

    A longtime Sig P220 owner I began my search for a smaller CCW years ago. My Initial Fantasy Selection Criteria: NASA grade metal alloy frame, 27 round mag, micro footprint, 9mm or 40 okay, 45ACP preferred, manageable felt recoil in my paw at the range and in my wallet after purchase. After my return from Mars (multiple assessment @ retail stores) I kept hearing about the XDS45’s but was unable to actually to physically see one. I chalked it up to major media hype and low Springfield consumer product output.

    A few days later at the range, Cinderella (my assigned code name to her) asked if I could inspect her pistol to determine if it was firing OK. After securing my weapons I went to her station and waited for her husband completed his volley into the target. I soon learned that Mr. & Mrs. Cinderella had purchased matching (Harp Music Please) XDs45’s. I inspected, tested and fell in love with Cinderella’s XDS. It fit and functioned deliciously in my hands albeit far from meeting my fantasy CCW specs. We came to a fair and square agreement and she purchased an XDs9 from the funds I provided.

    In this day and time of shareholders shouting at corporations for mega sales, jumbo dividends, fierce competition, etc.., it takes courage and good leadership for a company to stand up and say “Houston we have a problem”. I truly don’t like the inconvenience and hope my XDs finds it way back home soon, especially with that self cloaking 27 round magazine. Carpe diem!

Springfield imports a gun that is made in a 3rd world country with low wages and sells it for more than it’s worth. This is my opinion but the $600 msrp (most sell at or close to the msrp)on the XD,XDM, or XDs is too high. I bought a Glock instead. I think Glock added the Gen 4 not because of the XD but due to the interchangeable back straps that every one else was making thanks to H&K, not the XDM.

        $18 dollars a hour with 5 to 9 years experience, $8 a hour with up to 4 years. $18 dollars a hour for up to 9 years exp. I do not call that high. Croatia is not some shinning example of economic growth. The E>U> is not doing well this is why some countries that are economic sound on their own want to leave the E.U case in point England. England still uses the pound along with the Euro due to the worry of the stability of the EU Euro crisis. OK I think guns made over seas is good it helps to lower the cost of US made gun, but not in the case with the XDM or XDS why so much more than a S&W or a Ruger or even a Kahr? As far as 3rd world country it is not based on where it is located on a map but how the people of the country live, Croatia at best a 2nd world. The whole world is starting to live a little better this is a good thing but we have a long way to go before places like Croatia have the freedom and standard of living we enjoy in the USA

          What are you talking about, Joe? This is the most ridiculous comment yet. Without having any idea of the R&D that went into the XDS, which I am sure was considerable, the features that the XDS comes with compared to a Glock would warrant $100 more any way you look at it. Even if Croatia was a 3rd world country (which it is not), you are paying for the value of the product you purchase. If it was manufactured in the US it might be more expensive, but it isn’t and this is one of the many attractive features of the XDS. The Kahr PM45 is going to cost you at least $250 more than the XDS, and S&W or Ruger don’t have a comparable pistol to compare it to… not sure what your point is here.
          Lastly, keep your constrained macro-economic knowledge to yourself….

    never had a problem with my XDs 45 acp in over 600 rds and I LOVED it so i bought the XDs 9 mm and never fired it i found out about the recall and sent them both in and all I can say is I WANT MY XDs !!! Now I’m back to carring my Glock 30sf man what a difference when my XDs come back the Glock will become my bed side gun

    I bought my XD-S when there were none to be had in town so I ordered from a company out of state. It took about 10 days to receive and process through my FFL. In the ensuing period I talked to several employees at local gun stores and heard what a mistake I had made and how there is now way the XD-S can be enjoyable to shoot. Being a veteran of the Kel-tec .380 I know how a concealed carry gun can hurt to shoot. This gun was a revelation. It changed the game so I see this as product refinement as a process, not a failure. I am in a business of working on complicated machines and in this age of space age materials and trying to squeeze more out of lighter and newer metals and polymers, I find it disingenuous that so many users feel like springfield has done something wrong. They are continuing to innovate. Go along for the ride and enjoy it or go back to your boring old pistols that weigh a ton and aren’t anymore reliable. BTW….the reason they use FedEx is so they don’t have to spend the money and manpower to call, email, pony express or whatever to let you know they have your gun!! Holy hell use your head. Log on to FedEx and if it says delivered…..then guess what? Springfield has your gun.

I have some Springfield Armory guns now and I actually sent one in for some modifications. I have received the gun back but wondered if Springfield Armory or other gun manufacturers ever survey the customers about their experience. Thank you.

    Larry, are you really going to go down that road here? Springfield is a local company for me, as is Rock River Arms and Les Baer. They build some of the best quality “plastic guns” on the market, and they have a lot of credibility. There are a lot of people around the world carrying “plastic guns” who trust them with their lives, and they should. They’re engineering marvels, and I enjoy mine at least as much as my antiquated revolvers and “all steel” semi-autos. If you can’t change with the times at least don’t grind your axe every chance you get.

When you have a company as big as SPRINGFIELD things happen.I own several SPRINGFIELD ARMORY m1a rifles, SOCOM 16-2, STANDARD LOADED W CLUSTER RAIL MA 9827, XD 9MM, NATIONAL MATCH RIFLE and have never ever had a problem with anything i ever bought FROM THIS COMPANY. People love to bitch and complain for no reason, i bet there are SPRINGFIELD customers who would complain while they were receiving oral sex. THATS LIFE, GET OVER IT, SHIT HAPPENS.     Can you confirm, or deny, whether the external roll pin on the grip safety is merely a Visual Indicator that the pistol has been upgraded, or if it actually connects to something internal (actually has a function)?

    Like others I bought into the hype on the xds, smallest 45 light perfect ergonomics yada yada. Bought the gun and really did not like it no matter how I tried to. The not returning to battery is still going to be a problem for many. I own several sub compacts kahr, glock, sig sauer to name a few its not limp wristing. If a simple press check reveals this flaw in this gun and none of the others its a problem. Now Im afraid I will have to take a loss to off it in favor of another.

    I dearly loved my XDs .45, and I hated to return it for the recall. However, I did so as soon as I read the GA report. Getting the pistol to Springfield was relatively easy, as I only had to drive 40 miles to a ‘live’ FEDEX location because they wouldn’t allow it to be sent via drop box. I have only two problems with the recall: One, Springfield never let me know that they received the pistol, which I think is totally unacceptable. My name, address, phone number, and e-mail address were included. Yet I had to telephone the company to find out if it had been received, a month after I sent it in. There should at least have been a tracking number associated with the shipping label. Two, you report a half-pound increase in the trigger weight on an already heavy trigger. That was the worst thing about the XDs to begin with. Perhaps I cannot tell the difference in weight, either, but it was significantly heavier than my Glock 36 to begin with. I bought another 36 to carry while my Springfield has been gone. Now that I’m accustomed to the additional pistol weight, I may not switch back. I have a somewhat “bad taste in my mouth” concerning Springfield Armory.

      The “tracking number” is/was on the shipping label. FedEx uses a 12-digit numeric sequence for their tracking numbers. It generally shows on any document in the format xxxx xxxx xxxx with the spaces as shown.

      First thing I did after printing my docs for the return was to make a copy to keep in my own personal records. With that tracking number, you could have easily followed the package on FedEx’s website and known the moment that it was signed for in Geneseo, IL. You could even have been sent an email or text by the FedEx automated system.

      Find your documentation, find the number with that format and track it now. You had the information you’re demanding in your possession the entire time. (You kept copies of EVERYTHING, right?) You also should have asked the “Live” fedex customer rep about tracking questions BEFORE you left the building if you didn’t already know what was going on.

      It is amazing the number of complaints attributed to SA (and even FedEx) that are actually due to people not doing their own due dilligence.

        We do not have a Fedx drop spot her either I gave mine to the Fedx driver (any Fedx driver will accept packages) and followed it on the website which will even tell you who signed for the package.

        I also find it hard to believe that Bob had to call S/A to be told that they had received his firearm. I got my shipping order online ( no computer whiz ) filled it out and took it to Fedex. I asked the lady where I would the tracking no. and she pointed it out. I tracked my pistol each day and upon arrival at S/A it even showed the persons name that received it and the time. I am very satisfied with the service and the notifications that I have received from S/A and Fedex. Can’t wait until I get mine back so I can fire it for the first time.

        You could have gone on line and arranged a FEDEX pickup at your house in a timeframe convenient to you, no extra charge. Would have saved you a lot of driving. Other have already pointed out that you could have tracked it right to the person who accepted it as SA on the FEDEX website.

      Check the lips on the magazine when you get one again. Most likely you dropped a magazine and it is the same one that is plaguing you every time. Magazines can go out of true without it being really noticeable.

    I have always been skeptical of the new designs, lack of quality in the plastic gun markets today. The problem with today’s gun manufactures are, in order to sell any guns, they need to be affordable. Everything from the entire gun frame, trigger and internal parts are mass produced. How hard is it to fill a mold with plastic? The craftsman is taken totally out of the picture along with the quality. The target consumer from ages twenty something to age 40 are not able to recongnize quality in a gun because they have never had it. They never had the opportunity to witness it. Most young people today can’t afford quality anyway. Hence, the plastic gun world we are all accustom to today as a result. I am not surprised Springfield had a recall, and they shouldn’t be either! Walmart sells plastic guns in their toy dept.

      I don’t think this is a fair assessment of polymer guns on the market. Even if you have a preference for steel or aluminum over polymer, to make a blanket statement that polymer guns are akin to the quality of toy guns is disingenuous. For well over 20 years, Glock (who I believe really set the benchmark) has serviced MANY police and military personnel without fail and have even brought a level of dependable quality that has been unheard of for any type of weapon, save perhaps the revolver. Your comment sound just like what it is…and old man that is set in his ways and refuses to adapt to future technologies.

        How hard is it to fill a mold with plastic? No harder than CNC’ing a chunk of metal. However, it’s easy ONLY AFTER many many hours of engineering the polymer, the mold, the molding time, temperature and pressure profiles, etc. My father is a retired old school tool and die maker. I’ve worked in an analytical & quality capacity with “plastics” for a Fortune 50 chemical & technology co. for the past 29 yrs. I’ve seen both first hand, and IMHO quality has only gotten BETTER with time & technology. BTW, I’ve owned the XD-s in .45 for over a year, and have put ~600 rounds down the pipe without a single hiccup. I love it! Mine will go back to SA after the rush.

          Just avoid RWS ammo in .45 like the plague. I have tried it in 3 different XDs’s and had the same misfire issue in all three pistols. Encountered at least one and sometimes as many as 3 misfires per magazine (clip! lol), whether I employed the standard or extended magazines. I have sent all three back to SA for upgrade. Anxiously waiting to get my daily carry gun back. Lets face it, my USP .45 C is a great pistol but it is heavier and incrementally larger but it’s amazing how spoiled one gets.
          A Springfield employee explained that euro milspec ammo is not optimal for the XDs but I’ve put hundreds of other brands through the pistols without a misfire.

      Really Larry??? I have steel, alloy and polymer handguns and by no means would I say my polymer weapons are inferior to the others. In fact, it’s just the opposite. They have been and continue to be just as reliable and without a doubt, more comfortable to carry than their steel and alloy bretheren. Oh, and yes, I do think I can recognize (try using a spell checker) “quality” in a gun as I have owned and do own many fine firearms such as H&K’s, Colts, S&W’s, Para’s, SA’s, Walther’s (from WWII period & up) just to name a few. So please, go put away your non-polymer “quality” handcrafted flintlock dueling pistol, have a seat in your lazyboy and turn on your B&W tube TV or maybe crank up the radio and tune into the Fireside Chat while I head to the range. You Sir, have a nice day. ;o)

      I think you hit the nail right dead center: AFFORDABILITY. If you want to spend the cash there are custom guns out there of all sizes and types and probably made from all materials. Who has the bucks or wants to carry a $5000.00 gun around everyday? I can’t afford a 1959 all steel Cadillac either, either to own or drive daily. That is why they are production and OMG, might have a little problem here and there. If all you people hate your SA so bad, or any gun for that matter, please give them away to me. If you think they are so bad, then they can not be worth any money, so give them away to me. That will end all your troubles and heart aches and I will be glad to except the responsibility of taking good care of them for you and relieving you of any further problems that they may cause you.     I traded mine. Disgusted with the fact that this took so long and that they released a Croatian Glock with a safety problem in the first place. A crying shame since I loved the little gun, but I’m done with SA for now. Not answering emails or phone calls is unacceptable customer service in my book. Period.

        I like the xds 45 but I must say I have had many problems with it since the day I bought it not loading right jambs when when I pulled the slide and that was using hornady cd . So I took it apart oiled it good and polished the feed and made it much better . I sent mine in for the upgrade because if you try to trade it in you wont get anything for it with this recall dealers in fl don’t want to touch it for more than 300.00 I cant wait to get mine back best carry gun ever. For the record I had a keltec 9 and would not trust my life with it they are garbage get an xds9

          @Jason (posted at 3:20 p.m., 28 Oct). I had the same problems with my XD-s right out of the box that gave me great concerns. It wouldn’t chamber the round unless the slide was locked back, mag inserted and slide released. If I tried to manually rack a round into the chamber the round would get hung up on the bottom edge of the armory. The other problem I had was ejecting any rounds when unloading and clearing it…the round would just get hung up in the mag well/armory. I called Springfield about my concerns. They were very knowledgeable about the problem and asked how many rounds I’d put through it so far. I told them 200. The gal on the other end said that due to it size, the tolerances were extremely tight and that it would need at least 300 to 400 rounds to start chambering/ejecting properly (for it to loosen up adequately). I ran another 200 rounds through and at about the 350 round mark it was like a totally different gun. I haven’t had any issues with it since and I’ve run maybe 1200 rounds through by now. By the way, another suggestion by customer service was that I keep it well lubricated during the break-in process as well. Did the trick. And I wouldn’t trade this little gem for anything.

      It takes it and never has let me down. Ever. Otherwise, I would have already been dead. Sad, I would have loved to buy yours. You just did not know what you had. Clearly Spring Field said they were understaffed and built up.
      A glock my friend this is not. They are not as great as you might think. Type Glock + XRay in to google, watch the cracks in your barrel appear.

    It was NOT all the XDs pistols that were recalled but only a certain numbered sequence of the handguns. They give the serial numbers of the handguns recalled.

          That happened to me too. A few days later, when I tried it again, the site accepted the number. I may have entered it wrong, but I don’t think so. I believe that initially the site wasn’t working properly. Either way, believe it – all XDS pistols have been recalled. I’ve seen many at gun shows and dealers. All of them have serial numbers in the recall group.

    When the early reviews came out I was skeptical that it was that good. but wanting a small .45 I bit the bullet and was immediately please when it arrived…then amazed as I started shooting it, that the wags in the media were right…it’s great. It immediately became my only carry gun…and I anxiously await it’s return. I never had any of the safety issues occur and don’t know anyone that did. but for what this has cost Springfield in terms of time, money, embarrassment, and bad press…I wonder how many heads rolled down the hallway and out into the corporate gutter. Whiners aside, I personally wish the trigger pull had gotten lighter, also the power required to rack the slide could be a lot less…but then I guess it would kick like Jack’s old mule, huh? The 9 might be nice, but I think (for size) I’ll keep my old KelTec single stack PF9. endit

    I bought my 45 XDS shortly after reading the first review here. To say I was pleased with the purchase would be an understatement. I’ve shot probably 1000 rounds through it, and when I read the recall notice here, it rattled me thinking about what might have happened to me or the many friends who shot it. The return was easy, Springfield emailed the FedEx shipping label immediately after I filed my claim and the communication on status from the company has been excellent. I haven’t gotten my updated pistol back yet, reading this review has been good and put to rest whether I needed to decide on another carry pistol. This is a truly impressive pistol that works perfectly for my needs, I will be very happy to have it back. Thanks Gunsamerica for getting all of the facts out so quickly.

    Good that they are finally going to start shipping at last. However, Springfield owes every owner (I’m one of them) for their poor communication initially, and not being upfront about the recall.
    I was told it would be a 30 day turn around when actually they didn’t even have a fix yet.
    Mine has been gone since September 1st, no idea when I’ll see it again.
    Springfield has tarnished their reputation with this fiasco.

      I think it is good of you to have sent in your gun right away with complete faith that it would come back quickly. But I disagree with your analysis. A first recall is always going to be a learning experience for any company. Springfield has had to hire and train probably dozens of people for everything from communication to shipping and receiving to building an entire assembly line just for the upgrade… and they pulled it of in six weeks. The gun industry does not sell direct to consumer or in most cases direct to dealer. Few companies in our industry could handle tens of thousands of onesies, in and out. Add to that an assembly line in the middle. I think Springfield has done an admirable job, and you can only communicate what you know. It could be that they had an initial fix, and one of the engineers said at the last minute, “I think we can do it this way and actually improve the feel of the gun.” What would you rather? That the gun is fixed in the best way possible for a lifetime of service, or to get your gun back two weeks earlier?

      I think the opposite of tarnished. A lot of us viewed Springfield as mostly an importer of the XD guns, and not intimately involved with the products like with the 1911s and the M1As. Finding this bug through good customer service in Geneseo, manning up to it and investing probably millions of dollars in the upgrade process I think brings Springfield into a whole new light. The XD guns are not just great guns (and guns that reinvented handgun ergonomics). They are made and serviced by a company that is here for the long haul and that stands behind building and servicing the best guns they can possibly build.

        I sent mine in ASAP as per article seen here. I was expecting a return Fedex lable after filling out the web-form at Springfield – I waited 3 days no luck – the phone number was understandably jammed from all the traffic; so I sent it anyway. I inquired, by email, about getting refunded, and they said based on individual circumstance they were approving up to $50 reimbursement, if you faxed them your name, serial number of the weapon, RMA #, and fedex receipt. I had previously sent it 2nd day air as per web site instructions, and also later, faxed my receipt. The fax number is 309-944-8490. I wish everyone and Team Springfield all the luck they can for this endeavor!

        Oddly enough, I was not able to disassemble my XD-S for a thorough cleaning. But It never got a chance to get really dirty anyway – I’d only had a couple of clips through it on the range. Hopefully the disassembly lever/pin will work when I get it back.

        Just called the number and listened to the update. Springfield said in the message that they would be including an extended magazine for your XDS for the inconvenience. It’s a nice gesture in my opinion.

          Good pistol bad reputation and very bad PR. My duty gun has been SA since Sept. 6, and the time burglars at Springfield have it. I ‘s lost count with the number of time I have called and checked in regards to it being my DUTY gun and that is going to hurt me financially. If I don’t get it back before Thanksgiving I will be screwed. I will have to get another pistol, and reclassify a new weapon. One that I cannot purchase due to budgets with my family. I don’t get much a month to work with. It has all been a pisser. I have no faith with Springfield armory. I lost it the day I learned that there was no fix until October.

        Thank you for the in-depth article on the recall. I appreciated your breakdown of the exact changes being made to the gun to fix the safety issue. The information went a long way in making me feel better about what I’m getting back when I do get my gun back.

        With that said, Nigel did have a valid point about Springfield’s poor communication during the first month of the recall. As an XDS owners I appreciate the huge logistical challenges associated with designing and implementing the fix, hiring and training additional staff, and tracking the volume of guns Springfield is handling in the recall. If Springfield had just communicated the true status of the recall from the start, which has nothing to do with the execution of the recall, I’m sure the backlash that they have gotten from owners would have been much less.

        In just a couple of days I will have been without my gun for 2 months (mine was sent in August 30th). My chief complaint was the lack of communication and honest information during the first month of the recall. After that point Springfield came clean with the fact that they didn’t have a fix and have been communicating well including web, text, and email updates. I do believe the first month was handled so poorly that Springfield damaged their reputation. If they had just communicated the first month like they have the second month the impact to their reputation would have been negligible.

          I agree with your comments. Mine too was sent in early, Sept. 1. What is a bit troubling to me is that the latest info via email was that modifications were being made and pistols shipped beginning October 18. That was 10 days ago and I have yet to receive any shipping notice. I’ve been told by customer reps that mine was rec’d in one of the first 2-3 days of receiving. So the assumption is that mine should be one of the first to be returned, but again, no word after 10 days of shipping returned, modified pistols. Here’s a recommendation I just made to a customer rep … Springfield has the data. It would be easy to just post the following info to customers so that they can do their own math and figure the logistics. What are the total number of pistols received by date? How many pistols are you able to modify and ship per day? That info would be helpful and useful to those of us who have gone without for an extended period of time. Additionally, you have pistols listed by RMA number somewhere in a database. Why not allow customers to have access to this information to show when they would expect their pistol to be modified based on the number of units you handle per day. This type of information sharing, rather than a video which gives only general information that is really not all that useful to the customer would be a better investment of Springfield’s time and money. I’m not beating up on the company here, but it’s beginning to feel/look something like a government program. Hold the propaganda and give me useful info as to when I can expect my modified pistol back. I appreciate how busy and committed you are, but I’ll be the judge on how the pistol shoots and performs, and how happy I am. Thanks!

I don’t like her holster but she does… If I would have known I would have gotten a kydex to attach the Whitehat I use to carry my XDs. I am kicking myself in the ass daily as I am still using her holster and still haven’t ordered a replacement kydex for my holster.

            Do I have another week to wait or longer? If it is longer, I will order…. if not, I wont.

Will they be laid off? I am sure you folks have discussed this. In a real world that we live in now I can see more people out of work when you finish the last pistol repair.       I do not concur with your comment. The Armory have not tarnished their reputation, instead you tarnished your complaining. You gun is not the only gun to be upgraded. Yes, they did made the statement without realizing the impact of how many XD`s are out there. In my book they are one of the best company`s out there. This recall wont have any impact on my future purchases. I currently have seven of the Armory`s weapons all top notch including an M1A1 Loaded. You need remember that there are thousands of XD`s of two different calibers to be upgrade. You need to be more realistic with this process and wait like everyone else. First, The Armory generated the recall on their own, for your safety and mine. Second, Its not costing you a dime and third, they are sending you a free magazine,(which they don’t have to send you at all)basically for your troubles of not having the gun with you for a while. I have not received my gun either and yes I send in mine and was received September 5th. I’m not missing my gun. I have many other guns for conceal carry to defend my self and my family.       The only thing I have to agree with Nigel on here is the communication process. I never heard a word from Springfield that there was a recall on the XD-s. If it hadn’t been for my brother mentioning to me, when we went to the range one day in mid-October, that he thought he’d heard certain model(s) of Springfields had been recalled I still never would have known. I got home that day hoping that, if there WAS a recall, that it wouldn’t be for the XD-s and that it would be for my XD instead. Unfortunately, I couldn’t be that lucky. I got on the web and did a search and THAT is how I found out about the recall. This was only about 2 weeks ago. My XD-s was handed off to FedEx approximately 3 days later. Now I’m without my favorite carry gun until after the holidays. Bummer and then some.

        Did you ever send in your registration card? There isn’t a GPS on the guns.

          I sent in my registration card. I too heard about the recall just browsing the web. Immediately got my RMA# and got my gun off to Springfield on September 25th. I guess the registration card does help, I got a notice from Springfield on October 11th. I think the administrator is getting tired, what with the smart ass comments.

            I also sent in the registration card and only learned about the recall when I happened to go onto the SA website to order spare magazines.

          I too never ecieved any info or email on the recall, and yes I did send in my reg card? so that didn’t seem to be correct about the sending in of the reg card would have got you a notice email. as my buddy didn’t either and we sent the reg cards in the same day. I wouldn’t have known except I went to the gun shop where I bought it anand the owner and friend asked if I had sent it in yet? I said what do you mean? so I agree with the guys saying that it would have been nice to have gotten a email about the recall thank you

          I have to agree about the initial communications… poor at the beginning.

          I registered each of my pistols (online) on the days I picked them up in June and August. The first I heard about a recall was when I received the first “XD-S™ Recall Update” email on 10/05 (I obviously was already on their mailing list). I went online to get more info, found the recall website, and sent my XDS in on the following Monday (10/07). THEN I finally got a letter in the mail (dated 10/11), AFTER they already had received my shipment!

          I do appreciate the weekly updates now, though.

        My concern was the only way I found out about the recall was by calling Scheels to find out about ordering the 9 MM. They gave me the number for the recall. I have never shot my XDS but love the feel. I understand this is a huge process for Springfield. I would just like tohave a better idea when Im gong to receive my gun.
