Amidst news of a murder-suicide plot in California the story of a concealed-carrier, a Boy Scout and a handful of lucky survivors in Texas was largely overlooked. Several outlets have taken this as a prime example of biased reporting, with news outlets cherry-picking stories to support political views.
The California shooting took place on UCLA campus grounds and was tied to an earlier shooting in Minnesota and it didn’t take long for the focus to move on to the subject of increased gun control. At the same time, in Houston, the story of a concealed-carrier intervening in an attempted shooting spree was passed over when it became clear that he was not involved in the attack.
The information was there, with Houston’s KHOU reporting in detail. Originally described as a second shooter, it quickly became clear that one of the shooting victims, Byron Wilson, helped to stop the real shooter and was critically injured by gunfire for his efforts. Wilson, shot in both legs, is expected to survive. The “active shooter” or homicidal miscreant was shot and killed by police responding to the shooting.
Wilson’s friends and family have set up a public fund to raise money to pay for his unexpected hospital bills and long-term recovery. “He may very well have prevented more shootings, in effort to stop the shooter and distract him,” explains their Go Fund Me page. “Unfortunately, now Byron is in the hospital, severely wounded with both legs shot and broken, and the third bullet wound in the shoulder. He has already undergone multiple surgeries and blood transfusions, and he has many more surgeries to go. His road to recovery is very long, and he may not be able to walk again for two years.”
The medical bill fund has already raised $60,000 but still stops short of their $100,000 goal.

Others may have died if not for another Good Samaritan, Nick Latiolais. Latolais, 17 and a former Boy Scout, credits his experience with the Scouts for being able to help victims at the scene.
“I thought it was just a car accident,” Latiolais said in an interview with the Daily Beast. “There were three other people on the scene. They were just looking down on the man while he was screaming, ‘help me, help me’ and grabbing his leg.”
The quick-thinking Latiolais fashioned a makeshift tourniquet out of a belt to help staunch the bleeding of the man’s wounds caused by a bullet that went through his leg. He rendered aid to the victims while the shooting was still on-going–the police had not arrived yet.
“I never heard any gunshots but I had a lot of adrenaline going to my body, I guess. It was pretty scary when I realized that there was still some guy running around with a gun.” he said. In total six people were injured, including Wilson, and another was killed in addition to the shooter.
But stories where gun ownership, not gun control, is the core…they always seem to fade out more quickly.
And so the story has STILL not been reported, as the above words amount to a gobbledygook of bits of information that say nothing about what really happened at this shooting.
