House Democrats File Bill to Mandate Handgun Licensing and Registration

Eight Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives have filed a bill that would require handgun owners to obtain a license and register their firearms with the federal government.

New Jersey Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, the lead sponsor, introduced the same legislation in 2019, but it failed to make any headway. Proponents hope that this year’s iteration, dubbed the Handgun Licensing and Registration Act of 2021, stands a better chance of success with Joe Biden in the White House.

“Our government requires registration and basic standards for voting, operating a vehicle, even opening a business,” said Rep. Watson Coleman. “Yet, for weapons created with the single intent to take a life, we have developed a dangerous aversion to any mechanism to understand where and with whom these weapons reside.”

“The prevalence of gun violence in our nation is deeply troubling and we cannot delay in finding a solution to save lives,” said New Jersey Democrat Albio Sires, a co-sponsor. “The prevalence of mass shootings just this year show that immediate action must be taken.”

“Americans demand commonsense reform to prevent the ever-growing number of gun violence and incidents around the nation,” said New York Democrat Adriano Espaillat, another co-sponsor. “Americans own an estimated 393 million firearms, accounting for more than one gun for every person in this country. As the number of deaths from gun violence continue to rise to uncharted rates, we simply cannot wait for the next breaking news story to take action.”

The legislation requires the U.S. attorney general to institute a system requiring all handgun owners to obtain a license to own a handgun and then register that firearm in a database maintained by the federal government.

To obtain a license, prospective handgun owners must be at least 21 years of age and would be required to complete a firearms safety course, pass a background check, and submit fingerprints and a recent photograph. The license would expire within five years or less, at which point handgun owners would be required to renew.

Licensed handgun owners would then be forced to register their firearms with the federal government. To facilitate this process, the bill requires the attorney general to create a “method for easily retrieving information” related to the handgun owner and his or her firearm.

For those who already live in a state with a handgun registration scheme, the attorney general would have to verify that the state system is as strict as the federal system.

Violators would face fines, imprisonment, or both, and the bill specifically prohibits judges from suspending prison sentences.

Rep. Coleman’s legislation articulates a major gun control priority, but it’s unclear whether it will go anywhere. The same legislation was never even considered by the Democrat-controlled Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security when it was introduced in 2019. Though Democrats now control the White House, a handgun registration requirement is not part of Joe Biden’s stated gun control agenda.

Like the man said: 1939 Nazi Germany?? The first thing Hitler did was take away all the guns so they couldn’t resist/fight back, sound familiar?

    • Dug June 20, 2021, 8:36 am

well it was Nazi gun laws of 1938 that made it easier for Nazi and military to obtain guns But forbid Jews from owning guns Humm Nazi’s / DemocRAT’s Sounds like two peas in same pod

So instead of going after her own people who commit the majority of these violent gun crimes she goes after legitimate legal gun owners. The stupidity of liberals and thosecwho elect them is overwhelming.

So how will a handgun license and registered handgun save a life? It will not! The only thing that registering firearms will do is help track the gun to the owner AFTER it has been used illegally. It will give the government “easily obtained information” of who has guns to be confiscated. Also, if the government does not want you to have a firearm any more, they just revoke or do not renew your license and they know what firearms you have and are to be turned in. Once again this would be a law that does not affect criminals since they don’t obey the laws!

Suffice it to say that anything I could say here would undoubtedly find me banned from posting in the future. But what I will say is that if these elderly minority Representatives are so concerned about this, they should clean up their own cities and districts first before coming for all of the law-abiding citizens across the fruited plain. Stop plea-bargaining away the gun charge in prosecutions, put your city’s cartel distribution centers out of business. Put a major hurt on the gangs in your cities. Democrats – YOU OWN THIS PROBLEM. It’s not our problem.

There are always comments to these unlawful proposals.
Actually it should be a question.
It takes 38 states to make a constitutional change, so who are the 38 states voting for the change?
These socialist proposals, according to the constitution, can’t happen with a congressional vote! There must be an amendment change that isn’t going to happen without 38 states to let it happen.

Start enforcing current gun laws in minority communities instead of coddling them would go a long way to end firearm violence.

  • Paul R Labrador June 18, 2021, 10:01 am

I’m all for it……the moment they ALSO require a license to vote, to exercise free speech, and to be safe from unwarranted search and seizure……

  • Frank June 18, 2021, 9:46 am

I’m sure all thugs are the first inline to register their arsenals, these idiot politicians don’t get it…

We need to look at the bigger picture. Gun violence, defund the police, new and restrictive gun laws, low or 0 bail for criminals are all part of the same overall plan.federal police will be next.then all law enforcement will be federal.

  • Dexter Vaughn Winslett June 18, 2021, 9:16 am

Nope. This old popo bywill smile as I resist and die fighting democrat communist tyranny.

  • Paul June 18, 2021, 9:11 am

Funny isnt it how all of the mass shootings occurring happen in democrat controlled cities. You know the same cities that only prosecute 10% of the people caught committing a crime with a gun for gun crimes. The same cities that defund the police. With over 50,000 gun laws on the books already just how inflicting another law on the entire country going to fix a DEMOCRAT caused problem?

    • Randy June 18, 2021, 10:20 am

      Almost everyone was being observed
by the fBi as well . Every mass shooter was being observed by —-

  • Glenn Weber June 18, 2021, 9:10 am

The current system of background checks and transfer ALREADY tells us where the guns ‘resides’. It just doesn’t include this socialist-style registration.

If you look at the incidents of gun violence and broke it down to ones that involved actual legal gun owners, the number is miniscule- more people are struck by lightning. The lion share of gun violence incidents are perpetrated by criminals who don’t follow the laws anyway. Forcing law abiding citizens to register for this Nazi-style, control-grabbing agenda will do nothing to alleviate gun violence.

Since nearly 10000 times more people die from illnesses related to heart disease and being obese, like this Rep Coleman appears to be, we should probably enact legislation to require a license to go thru a McDonald’s drive thru if the goal is saving lives.

The whole idea is outrageous. It’s a power grab and another attempt to control us. These people do not care about saving lives, they just want to control us and generate more money for them to piss away.

We need to resist this-fight it at every level. Our freedoms are being stolen from us, and this will only be the beginning.

    1939 Nazi Germany??

Don’t remember the past, repeat the past.

  • Bill June 18, 2021, 8:51 am

Are these not the same politicians that want to make it so ANYONE can vote in this country WITHOUT showing photo ID?

When are WE the people of this great country of ours going to STOP allowing 535 ELECTED Politicians
DICTATE to us the people that ELECTED them, what WE can and cannot do in our lives ?

  • Wilko June 18, 2021, 8:32 am

South Dakota state law: “No firearm, owned by any resident of the state of South Dakota, shall be subject to registration by any jurisdiction”. That says all that needs to be said.

  • Udon Nomi June 18, 2021, 7:37 am

ALL of those license requirement stated by the so called representative are state requirements, not federal. Further, NONE are enumerated as GOD GIVEN RIGHTS as per The US Constitution and Bill of Rights. Then again, it’s questionable about her ability to read, much less understand the Constitution.

  • survivor50 June 18, 2021, 7:25 am

And yet another ” GUN GRAB ” and ASSAULT on the 2nd Amendment…

You LOSE one right, and the rest will follow…

  • Whathappenedtomycountry June 18, 2021, 6:31 am

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣🤣🖕them right in the ass. Shall not be infringed. The should look up the word infringed, think twice, then get back to me. Because you’re commie elitist laws shall not govern me or my family.

  • Ardvark June 18, 2021, 6:16 am

And yet they stand against documenting people for a valid voting process! Of course that along with little people having guns gets in the way of their agenda of total control!

  • Randy June 18, 2021, 4:36 am

The Democrats don’t worry about the constitution because they believe it is a living document that can be changed with the times. They don’t care about crime otherwise why are the Democratic governors and mayors de-funding the police. What do you expect crime to go down. There are real bad people out their and the Democrats are ignoring the real criminals and want to make overnight millions more. The other explanation would be that the Democrats are doing this on purpose in order to create a national police force and getting rid of local police departments. Either scenario is to me under minding the constitution, which would make every elected official should be thrown out of office for not their oath to their office “supporting and defending the constitution”.

  • SuperG June 16, 2021, 9:10 am

Not only is this unconstitutional, it just gives the criminals another law to not follow. But as Forrest said, “stupid is as stupid does.”

Sounds similar to what the commiecrats are trying to do in Illinois. Similarities in the House bill and the Illinois bill is not puzzling at all.
