Walther's Piston Pistol: The CCP M2 .380 - SHOT Show 2020
Walther’s CCP M2 .380 has an easy-racking slide and reduced recoil to keep it on target.

Walther has added a new gun to their CCP line, the CCP M2 in .380. The CCP, or concealed carry pistol, is Walther’s foremost carry gun and it touts an easy racking slide and reduced recoil. True Pearce spoke with Walther’s rep at the range during SHOT Show 2020 for the full details and to shoot it.

This gun is just 1.18″ wide with a 3.54″ barrel. It’ll hold 8 rounds in a single-stack magazine and its trigger weighs in at just 5.5lbs.

The standout feature of this pistol is its piston-driven action. The piston sits under the barrel and uses the gases from each shot to cycle the next round into battery.

The CCP M2 runs off a piston under the barrel and the barrel is fixed in place.

Some might say it’d be a good gun for those with low grip strength, but its innate ability to stay on target should make it attractive to any shooter. True shot the .380 model, but Walther also makes a CCP M2 in 9mm.

This gun is very easy to rack, and the right-angle rear sights can be used to rack on edges.

Its frame is made of black polymer and the stainless steel slide comes in black or stainless. The thumb safety is only on the left, but the magazine release is can be swapped to either side. It has serrations at the front and rear of the slide, an undercut and textured trigger guard, and a pic rail. The rear sight stands at right angles for creative racking.

The Walther PPK has a fixed barrel. It also has very small sights and if not careful wicked slide bite.

I could be incorrect, but i thought this design wasn’t gas operated – it’s a gas delayed blowback. the detonation of a round starts the rearward motion of the slide, whereas the gas piston uses pressure to resist the rearward motion of the slide and slow it down, therefore requiring a less-strong recoil spring and making the slide easier to rack. As a young person with good grip strength that advantage is lost on me, but it’s an increasing trend and i do see the utility for those who have trouble racking the slide on some pistols.

I would imagine that heat soak might become a problem after extended shooting. But i haven’t handled one of these yet.

Fixed barrel semi-auto pistols are perfect for compact suppressors that don’t require a Nielsen device/piston. Let me know when this thing comes out in 9mm with a threaded barrel and I’ll buy one instantly.

I had one of these in 9mm, no threaded barrel though. Most ergonomic gun I ever put in my hand. I got rid of it because the takedown was horrible. You have to use a special little key. Total PIA.

That was something they didn’t address in the video. He mentioned that he needed the magazine to take the pistol down but didn’t go into any detail whatsoever about the takedown process. I’m interested in this for my wife but not if it has the same horrible takedown process…

The first gen CCP required a tool. The CCP M2 does not require the use of a tool
