Wow, I thought I won the lotto. I opened the case containing my new Colt Cobra SM2FO, 38 Special +P that I had ordered online. Inside the case was the new Cobra, but to my surprise it had a wood grip with the image of a cobra and the NRA logo. The pistol was supposed to have a relatively plain Colt logo molded rubber grip. I got excited over how awesome the grip looked, but then thought this must be a mistake. It was a mistake but not mine. Lucky me.
I wanted to know more about this edition and the wood grip. I could not find any information about it anywhere on the internet so I telephoned Colt customer service. The representative I spoke with listened to my explanation of the surprise discovery and then put me on hold. After a few minutes, he got back to me and explained it was a fluke that I got this NRA model, it had not been officially released but a “batch” accidentally shipped out. Again, lucky me.
I’m not sure how many of these NRA wood grip Cobras are planned to be released, but according to the Colt representative it is a special low quantity edition.
This is an impressive new revolver from Colt worthy of its heritage. The grip and balance are superb, great satin stainless finish, very comfortable in hand, and a fast-natural sight picture.
This new Colt significantly exceeded my expectations for a compact carry revolver.
