NBC’s Richard Engel recently reported on Serbia’s “gun recall program” following two mass killings in May.
If you watch his report (embedded above) or read his article, it’s pretty clear that Engel believes Americans “could learn from the country’s response.”
Engel interviewed Željko Brkić, the deputy interior minister in charge of the civilian confiscation program. Brkić claimed that for every weapon turned over to authorities in recent weeks he saw a “life saved.”
He also lamented the mass killings in the U.S. saying, “I can only imagine how you guys feel.”
But probably the most telling part of the interview was when he told Engel that citizens should “trust the police” to keep them safe because it’s their job.
Basically, Brkić is saying we should put all our eggs in the law enforcement basket for personal defense. While that might work for some, it’s a one-size-fits-all solution that doesn’t take into account different situations and needs.
Plus, it’s not at all realistic – police can’t be everywhere at once. When seconds count… right? The truth is personal safety often comes down to, well, personal responsibility and preparedness.

Unfortunately for the citizens of Serbia, their ability to protect and defend themselves has been savaged.
Newly enacted laws impose penalties of up to 15 years imprisonment for those possessing unregistered guns. The legislation also includes stricter background checks, psychological evaluations, regular drug tests for gun owners, a ban on new gun licenses, and harsher punishments for illegal weapons possession.
The folks in Serbia may be breathing a little easier today, thinking they’re safer with these new laws.
But here’s the real deal: you aren’t safer when your freedom to defend yourself is compromised. The price of personal safety should never be personal freedom.
And in a world that’s far from perfect, the ability to protect ourselves remains a fundamental right. As Serbia navigates this new territory, we can only hope they realize this sooner rather than later.

Let the RED States form their own country and the eBlue States do the same if that is what is needed.

I noticed this “reporter’s” anti-gun bias almost from the first sentence he uttered. Later, I noticed he works for NBC. That explained it.
Wow! What a bonanza for the Serbian Govt.! 70,000 guns! Just think what Ukraine could do with that influx!
