Yvonda “Bonnie” Gatens of Putnam County, West Virginia describes herself as a “tough old lady.”
Early Christmas Eve morning, she proved why that shoe fits. A would-be home invader was prying open her bedroom window.
Instead of cowering in fear, she took action. Gatens called 911 and retrieved her gun. Not wanting to see what this unwelcome guest had in store for her, she confronted the suspect before he got inside.
“I told him ‘you’re going to die’ and he fell over to the side,” Gatens explained to WSAZ.
The suspect fled the scene. When police arrived, they searched the area but to no avail.

Authorities are still investigating. In the meantime, Gatens has a message for the perp if he chooses to come back for another visit.
“If you come in here, it’s going to be you or me, and I’ll see to it that it won’t be me!” Gatens said.

Regardless, Yvonda Gatens exemplifies the spirit which caused Rome, Sparta and the Anglo-American democracies to field effective armies of citizen-soldiers. She chose to defend herself, and remained free, unhurt and whole as a result, when the person invading her home may have had other ideas. Thank you, Ms. Gatens, for your example to the rest of us.

Robert Heinlein may have given Roman matrons credit for what Spartan women told their women first, this lady clearly shows how America became guarantor of the world’s peace after World War Two.
We began as a nation of citizen soldiers, and our only hope to survive in a world that doesn’t intend to leave us alone is to maintain our nation’s customs and usages – as Yvonda Gatens does. All lives matter, and they’re all worth protecting.
